Spelling Support Advice Day 2

Good morning,

Following on from yesterday’s spelling advice and link I am sharing further strategies to support your child with spelling.

Some ideas/strategies that are useful for children are below:

  • Syllables: Break the word into syllables. Most syllables will contain a vowel sound.  Examples of this  include:                            fish-ing,              yes-ter-day,            be-gin.

  • Say the word slowly and write the sounds you hear:                            c-a-t,                  sh-i-p,                 w-i-th

  • Listen/look for smaller words that you know are inside the word:   yes– ter- day

  • Prefixes and Suffixes: Think if the word has a special beginning or ending that you know:                                                                                          hope-ful,            hope-less,              un-happy,                    dis-agree

  • Mnemonic:  Is there a rhyme or phrase that could help you:                The:    Ten  Happy   Elephants.                                                                                 Put:    Put   Up     Tents

I will add more mnemonics tomorrow for tricky words to support spelling.

Nursery News

The first week of November!! Children have had a great time outdoors in the cooler temperatures as Autumn sets in. The groups walked to the library on Tuesday and had the experience of storytelling from the librarian.

No welly Wednesday this week, but lots of outdoor opportunities were had in the garden. Thank you to all our parents who attended our first parent consultations of this session. It’s a great opportunity to get to chat about your child’s’ progression in nursery and share their experiences with us.

Emotions were discussed on Thursday, we are concentrating on 4 emotions; Happy, Sad, Fear and Anger. We will be concentrating on one a week. The first being happy. We would love it if you could take the time to talk at home about these emotions. How they feel, how they look and what would make them feel that way. Please share the learning with us in the nursery.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone !! from the Nursery Team xx

We are fast approaching the October break, but it hasn’t slowed the learning pace down!

This week we observed an abundance of fine motor development in Nursery. Children have opportunities to write using different media. Here we can see a child using a stick of chunky chalk to experiment with on a slate. Another child practices her cutting skills as she creates a beautiful border around her house she had drawn.

Mrs Beattie and Mrs Audsley introduced musical instruments on Tuesday. The children were developing listening skills and how to keep a beat to the music. All the children had a ball !!

It was our first Welly Wednesday of the session. The children loved running up and down the leaf covered hill and looked for signs of Autumn , we also had a look at the tree,s naming the parts of it with some help. They all listened to instructions and kept themselves safe on the walk there and back.

NURSERY NEWS

We hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend!

This week in nursery found us outdoors having great fun using open ended resources to create risky play and fun experiences to develop our gross motor skills, social development and our thinking.

Tyres and drain pipes were very popular. Some piling them high to make a” Tyre chimney”. This provided a great way of experimenting with sound and echo.

Others used them to roll and crawl inside for fun. The tubing was a great media to experiment with size and measurement. The children found items small and big to fit inside the tubes and roll down to the bottom.

Inside the nursery children were making “pizza” this week using the magnetic triangle shapes. Great discussion then started as to what they like on there Pizza and what shapes were created whilst adding them together. This was a great mathematical experience for the children including counting, fractions and shape recognition. The children then had the experience of going out into the community to buy Pizza for snack from the local shop. We had to keep ourselves safe on the walk there and look around the shelves for what wee needed. We then gave money to the cashier to pay for our items.

The children were gathered around to discuss the shape and how many pieces we would have if we kept cutting it into slices. The best part had to be getting to eat it !!

Invitations were given out this week for our McMillan coffee morning next week. You are all invited back to share a coffee and cake to raise money for this great cause on Thursday at 11.30 for AM children and 1.15 for the PM children. Full day children cn come along on either of the session that suit best.

PLEASE BE AWARE WE HAVE A CHILD JOINING OUR NURSERY FAMILY THIS WEEK WITH SEVERE ALLERGIES. PLEASE BE VIGILANT IN WHAT FOODS ARE IN THEIR LUNCH BOXES AND BAGS. ANY FOODS MUST NOT CONTAIN- NUTS, ALL DAIRY, CARROT, BANANA, LENTILS,  YELLOW SPLIT PEAS, PEAS, CELERY OR EGG.

NURSERY NEWS

What a wonderful week we have had in the nursery this week. The weather has been fantastic and has given us all great fun experiences in our garden and out to the trim trail.

Come back and play has been a great success thanks to all of the parents and carers who found the time to come along and share our learning in the nursery.

Our area manager Miss McClory was around this week and will be next week too. She is loving her time in our nursery and loves welly Wednesday!!

The children moving on to P1 had transition on Monday. The groups visited both classrooms and were given the experience of literacy and numeracy activities with Miss Boyes and Mrs Davenport.

We celebrated Sophia’s 4th birthday on Monday too.

Welly Wednesday was a bit different this week we had a play on our Trim trail track at the front of the school. We then had a picnic snack in the sunshine. Please remember to apply sunscreen at this time of the year and a hat to keep them safe.

The Swans have had Babies!! We had a walk along on Friday to see how many and give them some of our left over snack. We had a look on our smart board to find out what Cygnets like to eat. We found out they like to have sweetcorn. The children will visit the local shop next week to buy some to take with us on Welly Wednesday. The female Swan is called a ‘pen’ and the male is a ‘cob’ and they eat sweetcorn 🙂

Have a fantastic fun filled weekend!! Remember Monday is a Holiday and we will see you all back here on Tuesday xx

NURSERY NEWS

What a wonderful family wellbeing week we had as our Parents came back to play and find out more about their childs experiences in nursery. For this come back and play experience we wanted to include our values. Each day the children explored what each value meant as we discussed these in a child friendly way with parents too.

Monday was LOVE, where children painted their hands and we discussed “who they love”. Some parents got in on the action too!!

Tuesday was KINDNESS day, Children were asked “what is kindness?” their voice were recorded and are on display on our values wall.

Wednesday was FRIENDSHIP where we promoted the importance of friendship and looking after each other on our Welly Wednesday Walk, and discussed who were our friends in nursery.

Thursday was HAPPINESS day, the children were to think of what made them happy and to think about feelings. Some children painted pictures of themselves “happy” and these are now in pride of place on our Values display in nursery.

There was no PEEP class on Friday, but this will be back this week coming on Friday 22/2/19.

What a fantastic fun filled beginning to our new term we have had this week. Lots of stories and fun adventures to be shared! Some people had a visit from Santa!! We shared together what he had brought us and some children have drawn wonderful pictures of their favourite present in our talking books.

We have been looking  and talking about fractions, how many pieces can you cut a pancake into?

Dinosaurs have visited our nursery and the children have created ‘Dinosaur Land’, this has lead to mathematical and language experiences as we compare size and learn the names of the Dinosaurs.

We have begun to learn about rhyming words too, please ask your child around the home which words sound the same. See if they can answer you and let us know how they got on!!
