Primary 7 Weekly Round Up!

Weekly Highlights

In Literacy this week we have been preparing for our trip to Sky Academy Studios. On this visit we will be splitting into four studios to create a trailer for our own movie/tv show. In groups of four we have looked at genres and created storyboards to illustrate the beginning, middle and end of our story. We will use our writing lesson next week to re-draft these and vote for our four favourite boards to use on the day.

 

In Numeracy we are getting our heads around word problems. Before Christmas we discussed how difficult we find word problems so we have started taking ten minutes at the beginning of our numeracy learning sessions to work with talk partners to solve word problems together – we have been looking at word problems that use multiplication and division. Perhaps you could come up with some at home together?

 

In HWB we have started our gymnastics block! We have been very happy to have Mr Cummings from St Margaret’s with us for our Wednesday PE slot and will continue to work on the gymnastics shapes, balances and creating sequence showing good posture. We have also begun our new Building Resilience unit where we are looking at our emotions and how complex they can be. We watched a smashing video of a wee baby who experiences some serious emotions in the space of one minute – watch together and enjoy, then discuss those emotions.

Pupil Voice

Daniel – I learned that when you are diving by ten you move all the digits to the left in the place value board.

Ryan T – I learned that away back when in Glasgow all the Catholics were said to support Celtic and all the non-Catholics supported Rangers – in my family half support Celtic and half support Rangers.

Ambra – I learned that Martin Luther King Jr helped people be equal even though they were born a different race.

Haseeb – We have been drawing and writing a story board. I chose fantasy/horror.

Abi – In PM writing we have been learning about the explanation genre.

Home Learning

This weekend it would be great to discuss discrimination as a family. It is a central theme in our class novel, ‘Divided City’ and has been interesting to discuss following our learning about Martin Luther King Jr. Next week all P7s are going to enter the Action on Sectarianism poster competition which will allow us to explore sectarianism in more depth.

P3 Weekly News

Learning Overview

Our Wordboost words this week have been ocean, ancient, spine, immediately, peciliar and shriek. We listened to the story of Hiccup the Viking who was seasick. We were very good at recognising the boost words and also putting them into WOW sentences. In P.M. writing we have been learning how to write an Exposition and understanding what a statement of position, a series of arguements and a concluding statement are. We then wrote an Exposition as a class on exercise and drinking water. We came up with fantastic arguements for both of these.

In Maths we have been learning about Time and and applying our knowledge of time facts to help us solve word problems.

As it is now the season of Advent we learned about the Advent wreath and the different meanings behind the candles and how we need to get ready for the birth of Jesus.

Our WOW walls on our one note profiles have been getting lots of fantastic and WOW work put on them. There has been lots of collaborative learning and model making with the Kapla and also in the Play room. Please log in and have a look at the amazing work that has been done.

Thursday was busy making posters for our stall at the school fayre and we were delighted that we sold all our sweetie cones!

Christopher has enjoyed learning Spanish this week.

Oliver loved hearing about schools in the past and he is glad he didn’t go to school then.

Evie and Hanna enjoyed learning about Time in Maths.

Malakai really liked making posters for the school Fayre.

P7 Weekly Round Up!

Another busy week in P7!

Weekly Highlights

This week saw us with a big focus on ENTERPRISE as we prepared our stall for the Christmas fair. We chose to make stickers to sell and started by creating a  business plan. We worked out how much our materials had cost, how many stickers we wanted to make and how much we needed to sell them for in order to make a profit. We were delighted to cover our costs and make a profit which is going towards a new promethean board for our school!

In literacy this week we have been thinking more carefully about writing a quality exposition. We know that an exposition gives one point of view. It begins with a statement of position. This week we have learned all about the suffragettes and even had a real life suffragette in the classroom! We retained so much knowledge from this activity which we used to argue that the suffragettes were justified in their use of violence to gain the right to vote.

In numeracy this week we have been showing a real growth mindset through our work on word problems. We find this really difficult and have spent time as a whole class looking at strategies for working out these problems. Mrs Macdonald has been using a bar model to help us work out word problems so this is a strategy we are exploring. Krystian suggested we look at one word problem each day in maths and working with our talk partners to share ideas, this is something we will start after the Christmas holidays.

Next week we have our upper school election on the same day as the General Election – we have been working in our political parties to write a manifesto and create a party political broadcast which we will present to the upper school next week. Pupils will then complete a polling card and cast their ballot to elect the upper school prime minister.

Oliwia I learned to use the bar model for word problems, it was good.

Haseeb Word problems were quite challenging but now I’m getting used to it I’ll use bar models.

Aleks I loved PE with the nursery this week – they are funny!

Ryan T We did a new thing at Scottish Country dancing where we did a high school level dance to Cotton Eyed Joe.

Ambra I loved learning about the suffragettes – the best bit was hearing about the suffragettes telling their story, what is was like and how they were feeling.

Aria I liked trying something new for PE doing the basketball game.

 

Learning at home

To celebrate our Big Build team winning a runners up place in the national competition – this weekend spend some time at home discussing the different types of buldings in our local area  which ones are old, which are new, how do you know?

Thursday is the General Election – talk about where your polling station is and how you decide who to vote for. If possible, take your child to the polling station with you to give them the real life experience!

P7 Weekly Round Up!

Another busy week in P7!

Weekly Highlights

This week has marked the end of our Big Build competition entry preparation. It has been a busy few weeks for the children involved, who have given up lunchtimes and any free class time to get it all organised! Mrs Scott has led this project with the P7 group and had Ian from Crudden homes in on Wednesday to discuss the progress and organise a visit to take final photos and have a presentation on the ideas behind the Big Build.

We also had our second transition visit this week with Group B – we enjoyed a science lesson with Dr  McAllister and a swimming session in the pool where we made our way across the breadth of the pool and back, then competed in teams to collect the most ‘sinkers’.

In numeracy this week we continue to work on addition and subtraction and discuss, explore and experiment with different strategies, always aiming for accuracy. We finished our week by revising the rules of the standard written algorithm (tower sum, chimney sum) for addition and are beginning to use this mathematical language as we move forward. Perhaps you could have a timed challenge working out 3/4/5 digit addition against each other at home this weekend?

In literacy this week we took part in the Book Week Scotland activities by entering the Scottish Book Trust 50 word fiction competition – we used our writing lesson to recap the rules of a narrative and used the context of a conversation to write our entries. The competition is available to adults and children and the context changes on a monthly basis. If you would like to enter the competition yourself you can do so at this link;

Pupil Voice

Mirren At transition we did swimming and science and it was really fun!

Aleks At transition we did lots of fun stuff in science about a bunsen burner.

Brooke We had to plug the rubber cord into the gas tap and then you push it down and turn it then the same person or the other person would light it with the lighter.

Daniel We did the 50 word story and it was fun.

Finlay In maths we used numeracy skills to do tower sums but we are calling them something different

Mirren We used leadership skills to help the nursery with PE.

Daniel We used teamwork in science (transition) when we had to figure out whether cotton, felt or bubble wrap kept the water warm (Brooke an insulator). We used a silver cup which would usually make the water cool down.

 

Learning at home

This weekend please take the time to read for enjoyment – we used book week Scotland to launch our new class reading challenge – we are going to try to read to the height of Mrs Conway. Every time we finish a book we will draw around the spine of it and add it to the ‘pile’ by sticking it on the wall –  Mrs Conway has agreed a whole class treat if we get to the target by June!

Primary 7 News!

What a busy week! I feel like we have earned our long weekend after this week!

It was a big week for our class as we prepared for our first class mass of the year. We used our lolly sticks to assign jobs, having them on a first come, first served basis – some of the jobs we needed doing were readers, offertory, slideshow technicians and music technicians! Father Simon thanked the class for a lovely mass 🙂

 

Writing this week was a roaring success as we wrote free verse poetry from the viewpoint of Auggie and Via from our class novel, Wonder. A few examples were posted to twitter and some others were added to our wall display.

 

A huge thank you to the families who came along to our ‘Meet the Family’ event on Thursday evening! Mrs Scott and I enjoyed meeting, chatting and getting to know you all 🙂 if you weren’t able to make it, I have popped some information home with the children today for you to enjoy together over the weekend! A wee reminder about our family photo challenge for the September weekend;

NURSERY NEWS

What a final week to this term !!

Monday was fun filled and children were (amongst lots of other experiences) practicing their fine motor skills. Little fingers had to manipulate keys and padlocks to find which key opened which lock.

Tuesday was our Special person and Grandparents Day. The children loved singing to the audience and sharing learning experiences around the nursery.

We also said farewell to Mrs MacDonald today. We will all miss her in the nursery, but wish her all the best in her new adventures xx

Wednesday was Welly Wednesday, not only did we have snow, but an Easter egg hunt too!!

Thursday is P.E day and today we had a lesson with Miss Ford as Mr McCurdy looks after his new baby at home. I the morning we played duck duck goose and in the afternoon we sat in the nursery and practiced some stretching to the hungry caterpillar story.

and then it was Friday !!!

Block play, magnetic shapes, Easter collages and crackers for snack all finished off with a run around in the garden 🙂

P2/3 Weekly Update

How quickly this week has flown by and super busy !

On Tuesday as part of Safer Internet Day we attended an assembly given by the Digital Learners. We followed this up in class by watching a short clip of children playing a game online, they had to make some choices and we all discussed what the safe options were and how we keep ourselves safe when online. It was also Chinese New Year and we found out that this year was the year of the pig.

We have really enjoyed having our Mighty Writer board up in class and as part of Smart start activity we got the opportunity to work collaboratively to compose a story using the board and put super openers and great conjunctions which we had as one of our success criteria in our writing.  We then read our stories to the rest of the class. In our writing lesson we wrote fabulous wintery poems using lots of exciting adjectives.

In Numeracy we looked at quarter past and quarter to the hour and started to work on subtraction. In number talks we looked at different strategies to work out how we reached the total.

Our wordboost book this week was Mr Beast Charlie and Dad go Monster Mad and our words were delay, pleasure, lug, lurk, satisfy and yank.

P2 continued to work on their People of the Past topic and learned about St John who has the local hospital named after him. They have written invitations to their P3 classmates to their showcase this week where they will share their learning.

P3 have been working so hard this week on their show A Blast from the Past and performed their dress rehearsal today. They are so excited to perform on Tuesday and Wednesday in front of families and friends. You are in for a treat!

Nursery news

Welcome Back !!!!

What a fantastic fun filled beginning to our new term we have had this week. Lots of stories and fun adventures to be shared! Some people had a visit from Santa!! We shared together what he had brought us and some children have drawn wonderful pictures of their favourite present in our talking books.

We have been looking  and talking about fractions, how many pieces can you cut a pancake into?

Dinosaurs have visited our nursery and the children have created ‘Dinosaur Land’, this has lead to mathematical and language experiences as we compare size and learn the names of the Dinosaurs.

We have begun to learn about rhyming words too, please ask your child around the home which words sound the same. See if they can answer you and let us know how they got on!!

P3 Weekly Round Up!

What a fantastic week it has been in P3!

Routines and Behaviour

Mrs Scott and Mrs Conway have been SO impressed this week with the behaviour in P3! On Thursday we had almost everyone on our praise board 🙂 fantastic! We have been trying so hard with the routines in class – to help us listen to instructions, follow directions, show we are READY to learn, show RESPECT to our classmates and staff and to keep ourselves and others SAFE.

We have recently started earning table points which the boys and girls are really enjoying – if you are spotted being good, being organised, being ready to learn, being a good friend (amongst other things!) you can earn your table 10 points – the winning table at the end of each day get a special prize! We are thinking about team work and what makes a good team 🙂 ask your child if their table has won, and if they have any ideas to help their table earn table points next week.

 

Literacy

We have continued to work on our WORD BOOST work. This week we read ‘Beware of Girls’. Our boost words were;

grumble

stagger

distant

Can you child use these words in a sentence? We are aiming to build the vocabulary of our children and word boost helps us do that! Does your child know any amazing words that would make us go WOW? Let us know of any next week 🙂

 

Numeracy and Maths

On Wednesday we managed to consolidate our grid reference work with a Halloween problem solving task. We had Mrs Swann (parent helper) to help with our grid reference colouring challenge. Mrs Swann was so impressed at how little help the boys and girls needed! Well done! Next week Mrs Conway is hoping to introduce the boys and girls to a simple version of Battleships – have you got this game at home? Ask your child if they would like to play to support their learning about grid references 🙂

The boys and girls LOVE learning about place value – especially when we can watch the ‘Place Value Rap’! This is a bit tricky for our boys and girls but has taught us about how we write numbers from left to right, but build numbers from right to left!

 

RE

We showed maturity and respect at our whole school mass on Thursday to celebrate the feast of All Saints Day. The boys and girls completed lovely prayers to some of the saints we discussed in class. Although the clip below is American, it helped us with our discussions about All Saints.

 

Committees

This week we had our committee group Friday – we split into our committee groups 9-10am on Friday morning and each of us explore something different through play. Have a look at our school twitter page to get an idea of the kind of activities we have been taking part in!

P2/3 Weekly Update on our Learning Adventure.

Another busy week in P2/3.

In our outdoor learning we were nature detectives and used magnifying glasses to look at a variety of things in the school garden. We had to work in teams and draw the object as it looked with our eyes and then draw it after using the magnifying glasses. It was amazing what we found and as it was frosty it was even more exciting.

     

In Literacy this week we read Hiccup The Viking which was our Word Boost book. We had to listen out for the following words ocean, spine, shriek, ancient, immediately and peculiar and remember if they were nouns, verbs or adjectives. In our reading we worked on our higher order thinking skills of Remembering where we had to write down the setting of our story, the main characters and what happened at the beginning of the story. We also worked on Understanding using our word boost knowledge of adjectives we had to write three adjectives to describe the main character, think of the main idea of our story and describe why the title was appropriate to our reading book.

We continued to work on our addition and counting in Numeracy and are becoming super at our number talks.

In our number talks we sometimes use ten frames and we can come up with lots of strategies of what do we see and how do we see it. Here is one you can try at home and you can post your strategies too!

In P.E. we are working on a fitness block and this week we became teachers and worked alongside P1D in a fitness circuit. We followed our school rules of READY, RESPECTFUL AND SAFE. We really enjoyed working with them and want to say a big thank you to Mrs Davenport for inviting us to join in.

   

In Digital learning this week some of us have logged onto Glow and we will continue with this next week. This will also be part of our Homework for next week and we are excited to be digital learners.

We have also been working very hard  during our Smart start in the mornings with lots of focus and great collaborative learning.
