The Amazing P3 Weekly Update!

Abu Bakr chose our title today as he felt we had been amazing and we had!

Learning Overview.

IDL.

This week we learned more facts about the Sun and the Moon. We then decorated a Space picture and had to recall a fact we had learned and write this on our sheet.

Literacy.

In our P.M. writing we have been learning about Explanations. As a class we produced a shared writing explanation of the life cycles of a Red Admiral butterfly and a frog. We looked at the different sections of an explanation.

We are continuing to listen to our class novel of The Eejits and finding it so funny!

Numeracy.

In numeracy we are continuing to learn how to add and subtract two digit numbers and this week we looked at using an empty number line to work out where a number would lie between two given numbers.

Health and Wellbeing.

In P.E. we have been working on different types of balances and working cooperatively to help each other. Next week we are going to do partner balances. In our Resilience work we have been learning the importance of taking some time to relax and concentrate on our breathing.

Spanish.

We have been revising the days of the week in Spanish and noticing how they don’t start with a capital letter as they do in English.

Busy, busy, busy in Primary 2/3

It has been another busy, exciting week in Primary 2/3 and the children would like to share their highlights with you.

Marcus – I liked making pizzas. My pizza had sweetcorn and ham. It was delicious.

Wojciech – I liked doing Superhero spelling and we learned about bossy ‘e’.

Leo – I liked playing with my friends at lunchtime.

Abigail – I liked counting to 100 in maths.

Patryk – I liked making the Enormous Crocodile using lots of kinds of green paper.

Josephine – I liked learning about Whole Body Listening and making a poster for our door.

Bernice – I liked playing ball games in PE where we had one ball then two balls.

Paul – I liked working on listening skills with Mrs McGonigal.

Nathan – I liked making cube towers in numeracy. Mine was really really big. I had to count to 84!!

Rafay – I liked writing about making pizza.

Alice – I liked planning our Spain topic for next week.

Zoe – I liked decorating the Enormous Crocodile.

Hayley – I liked making pizza.

Our first class Lead Learners were Ana and Paul and they did a wonderful job.

Food Technology was a popular lesson this week and everyone loved making pizza.

In Spanish we developed our talking skills and worked on saying hello and goodbye.

We’re all looking forward to Maths Week next week.

P6/7 weekly update

In literacy we wrote a diary entry as if we were the main character in the story. We focused on chapter 3 this week, at the end there was a bit of a cliffhanger as Michael went overboard. We can’t wait until next week to find out what happens next… Some of us were brave enough to read our diary starters to the class to help motivate and inspire others. We even put a tweet on Twitter, Chi-Chi is famous!! Remember to follow our class @mrsroy16 as we regularly Tweet throughout the week. We also worked in teams to do some comprehension work, that was good fun!

We have been playing maths games to help us develop our understanding of place and value, eg. maths pacman, roll the dice, roll and stick game and close to the target. Some of us also did a maths population task using the http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ website. It was really interesting as it was a live website and people were being born every second! Cole and Max also made a place value poster for the maths working wall.

Don’t forget the Sumdog Maths Contest is now live until next Thursday, points means prizes!

In PE we were doing some more rugby skills. We had the ‘ Scoop Pass’ competition, James, Nicholas, Leon and Shiv were the scooping champions this week. This game involved concentration, speed and co-odrination. We progressed onto some rugby skills focussing on the ‘back pass’, this took a few attempts to master, Leon was hilarious at this activity as he kept getting confused about when to run and when to pass.

Chi-Chi and Krzysztof were our first Lead Learners and did a great job taking responsibility for the Talking Books this week – well done guys!

Our classroom is taking shape now and there is some fabby work on display for you to see when you next visit us. Remember Ninian’s Natter is on Thursday 14^th September 6-7pm if you want to drop in for a blether and some Inspirational Maths activities.

P6/7 and Mrs Roy

Time flies by in P6/7

James gave us the title of our blog this week as we discussed how quickly the week had gone.

It all started on Monday where we did some focused vocabulary work linked to our class novel, everyone agreed that it was a pretty tricky task as we had to guess what the word meant by using the text surrounding it then look up it’s actual definition in the dictionary. Do you know what these words mean – reproached and suppurating? Place value is our focus in numeracy this week and we did some paired, independent and group tasks on Monday morning using resources like dominoes and flashcards to play different games to develop our confidence in reading different numbers. The afternoon saw us being introduced to Emotion Works, a whole school HWB resource. Again we linked this to our novel and used the emotion cogs to unpick each of the characters feelings in chapter 1 whilst working in teams.

On Tuesday we were very excited to start our rugby block with Mr McCurdy and everyone came well prepared for the outdoors! We had our first numbertalks session and showed Mrs Roy our explanation skills and mathematical thinking. In our novel study we read chapter 2 and were introduced to our Blooms Superheroes which will help us develop our reading comprehension skills this year. We all chose which questions we would like to tackle and tried to match these up to the superheroes. The afternoon continued with a novel theme and we started some ‘Hokusai’ inspired pictures, we used pastels to try and recreate the famous ‘Great Waves’ painting. Mrs Roy was in awe of our artistic skills!

Writing was a focus on Thursday morning and we used a previous talk lesson linked to our novel to write a balanced argument with the title: Sailing around the world. Everyone gave it their best shot and tried to use persuasive language. In numeracy we began to split numbers and partition them, as the numbers got bigger this became more difficult. We will continue to focus on this next week.

Friday ended the week nicely as we finished our earlier art work and got to do our first Big Maths Beat that challenge. We also went outside with Mrs Roy for a fun rugby session where we learned how to play banana tig with a rugby ball and practised our passing in small teams. The sun stayed out and we didn’t get wet, so that was a bonus.

This week we also welcomed Mr Turner to our class, a 3rd year student training to be a teacher, he will continue to work alongside Mrs Roy each week to support us in our learning.

And finally, the UN Ambassador’s came round all the classes this morning to announce that we had successfully achieved the Level 2 Award for RRS. We were all really pleased especially as some of the people in our class were in that committee last year. Well done everyone!!

Welcome to Primary 2/3

Hello and welcome to the Primary 2/3 blog.

We have had a super first week of term and the children have all settled in really well. We have done lots of ‘Getting to Know You’ Activities’ and the children created wonderful self –portraits. We also used our Spanish skills to introduce ourselves.

We have read The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl and have had lots of fun writing our own sentences about the story and creating chalk illustrations in the playground.

We even worked in teams to do a ‘Who Am I?’ challenge using the characters in the story. In maths we created pictures of the Enormous Crocodile using 2D shapes and Primary 3 were able to label their shapes as well. We also talked about the feelings of the Enormous Crocodile and wrote labels for our class display.

Another highlight has been creating our Class Charter. The most difficult part was choosing which of the many wonderful ideas we would use.

We all agreed that we would like a Superhero theme for our classroom door then completed Superhero identity cards to show our special powers including kindness, perseverance and friendship. What fantastic qualities to have in our class!

Our weekly news

What a great week we’ve had in P1R this week, where shall we begin…

In literacy we have now learned all our P1 Sounds so have been focusing on revising the ones we found tricky, eg. Digraphs and oa/oi. Some of us even learned about alternative spellings of the vowel sound ai/ay. We played games in pairs, used letter join on the iPads, did some cut and stick word tasks, did a team task in our Talking Book and practised spelling in our journals. In reading we are all progressing well and are quickly getting through different books. We enjoy our paired reading on a Tuesday with P7 and Mrs Docherty is now joining us for reading too which has been lovely!

Maths has been good fun as we continued to learn about time using little clocks, matching digital to analogue times, Stop the Clock (Dexter was our champion) on the smartboard and time bingo. We are all reminding Mrs Roy about lunchtime-12 o’clock and hometime-3 o’clock! You can download the Stop the Clock app onto your tablet or iPads at home if you want to try and beat your fastest time!

The Gruffalo continues to be our topic and we worked with the nursery to share our favourite characters, we all drew a picture and labelled it for our display while listening to the Gruffalo song. During Art we got out the paints and then created paintings of our favourite characters for our Art Gallery. We also finished our Gruffalo collage, we can’t wait to share it with you at Parent’s Night.

In writing we wrote a recount of our trip to the woods,congratulations to James and Klaudia who were our star writers.

As the sun was shining we took some learning outdoors for PE and Structured Play. We are all enjoying Athletics and are preparing well for Sports Day.

Nursery News

Another week has flown by in nursery. First of all we welcomed another member to our St Ninian’ s family. Khyla has joined the AM session. We hope you enjoy your time with us. On a sad note we said goodbye to Liam in our PM session who has gone to another nursery nearer his new house. We wish him well and will miss him.

The transition programme for our children going into Primary 1 continues with the nursery children working together with the children in both Primary 1 classes on Numeracy and Literacy carousels . This gave the nursery children an opportunity to see how they will be working when they come to big school. They were all excited and again were a credit to us. Well done everyone. In nursery we also listened to a song about the letter ‘m’ and we tried to think of things that began with this sound. As a home link activity we would love it if the children could bring something in beginning with this sound and also if you are out and about have a look and see what you can find that begins with ‘m’. Next week the nursery children will be going out for a short playtime with both their buddies and the Primary 1 pupils. This will be in the nursery outdoor area and the following week it will be in the school playground. If they wish the nursery boys and girls can bring a snack and drink with them which they can have at this time. It is only 15 minutes so something small to eat will be great. As they will be outside we would ask that the children come in appropriate clothing and shoes. Thank you for your support in this.

The children also received a lesson on personal safety this week when we had a fire drill. Both sessions had to stop what they were doing and leave nursery quickly and safely. All the children were amazing and we were very proud of them.

Outdoor learning has been very busy this week with lots of exciting adventures in their learning. The children have been using their skills of curiosity and inquiry when using our natural open ended resources. They have been on the bikes, making lots of yummy recipes in our mud kitchen, sitting in the sand pit and role playing at schools! We hope the sun keeps shining for us next week. A wee reminder that children should come to nursery with suntan cream already applied and proper clothing for the sunshine. Mrs Beattie’s PEEP classes continue on a Friday and this is what they will be doing this week. The first group will be working together choosing different size balls and finding ways of rolling , bouncing and throwing them to each other while singing songs. They will then enjoy snack and a story together. The second group after nearly being blown far far away on top of their large parachute quite literally and having so much fun doing so have decided to go outside again! Hopefully they will find other ways that they can use and play with the parachute together and also use stop watches to time themselves going over the school assault course which they had tried last week for the first time. Another exciting PEEP session ahead!

Nursery News

Its been a very short week in Nursery but we still packed in lots of learning experiences. Transition continued this week with both nursery sessions joining the Primary 1 classes to take part in either a numeracy or literacy carousel. The children got the opportunity to join in with a reading carousel listening to a story on the smartboard then moving onto working with a Primary 1 friend on a literacy app on the iPads . They also got a chance to make a Gruffalo story wheel which we will use to retell the story. In the numeracy carousel the children learned about time and made their own watches. All the nursery children showed a great attitude towards learning and were little superstars. Next week the children will be joining in with more carousels.

The children have continued to enjoy The Gruffalo topic and they got the chance to make their own Gruffalo masks. We will continue with this topic next week as the children have came up with lots of super ideas which are written in our talking books. Please feel free to have a little read when you are in nursery.

In P.E. with Mr McCurdy we have been concentrating on athletics. We enjoyed improving our running and jumping skills and next week we will be working on our throwing skills.

PEEP classes continue with group 1 learning about stopping, getting ready to think and go. They then got to take red, amber and green plates to take home to reinforce this learning. Group 2 have been working on their numeracy skills. They have had fun making their own skittles and using different sized balls to knock over huge tins and working with each other in order to listen and take turns. What fantastic fun they are having!

Just a little reminder that as the children are outside every day and hopefully the sun may shine can we please ask that suntan cream be applied before coming to nursery and that appropriate clothing is worn eg sun hat, long sleeve top. Thank you for your support with this.

For parents of preschool children a letter has been given out detailing parent meetings to provide you with important information before your child starts St Ninians. Please let any of the team know if you have not been given one of these letters.

Snack money is now due either £1 per week or £11 till the end of this term. This can be paid by iPad impact. If you are unsure of your payments please ask any of the team and this can be checked for you.
