P7 Weekly Round Up

Weekly Highlights

Literacy – For the past two weeks our writing task was to DISCUSS (present two points of view e.g. for and against) whether we think devices should be allowed in schools. It provided us with lots of things to talk about and we used our key points to make topic sentences to help us structure our paragraphs. We have also been ploughing through our class novel – Divided City. Is there anything better than spending the last 15 minutes of the day curled up with a book? 🙂

Numeracy – We were excited to welcome some teachers from across our cluster this week to observe our Number Talks session! Sometimes we struggle to articulate our strategies in number talks so we have spent the last few weeks revising our various multiplication strategies. We took it right back to basics with simple problems to help us build confidence in talking through our mental strategies. The observing teachers were very impressed with our knowledge.

HWB – I think it is worth a mention that the young people in primary 7 are the most wonderful audience for the youngest members of our school family. The P1 class came to share their writing last week and the P7 audience showed patience, kindness and respect as they interacted with the P1 pupils. Sometimes the pressure of P7 is a lot, with expectations of behaviour, learning and looking forward to the big changes ahead of us – but it was a wonderful opportunity for our P7 pupils to flourish as positive role models and supportive peers 🙂

Pupil Voice

Mirren – We used teamwork to get our house assembly finished.

Jay – I loved it when they read out my question on BBC Authors Live!

Krystian – I like it when we can use our devices to help us learn.

Daniel – I liked being part of the Fairtrade Tuck Shop

Home Learning

As we are now in the season of Lent – our home learning challenge is going to be Lent related 🙂

In Lent we think specifically about THREE areas of our faith;

PRAYER

FASTING

ALMSGIVING

As a family can you decide on one goal for each of these areas for the remainder of Lent. You might agree a special intention to pray for at mass each week? You might agree to give something up or do without something? You might agree to donate some food/clothes/toys to others in need?

You can tweet me your ideas @Mrs_Conway10

Have a wonderful weekend!

P7 Weekly Round Up!

Another busy week in P7!

Weekly Highlights

This week saw us with a big focus on ENTERPRISE as we prepared our stall for the Christmas fair. We chose to make stickers to sell and started by creating a  business plan. We worked out how much our materials had cost, how many stickers we wanted to make and how much we needed to sell them for in order to make a profit. We were delighted to cover our costs and make a profit which is going towards a new promethean board for our school!

In literacy this week we have been thinking more carefully about writing a quality exposition. We know that an exposition gives one point of view. It begins with a statement of position. This week we have learned all about the suffragettes and even had a real life suffragette in the classroom! We retained so much knowledge from this activity which we used to argue that the suffragettes were justified in their use of violence to gain the right to vote.

In numeracy this week we have been showing a real growth mindset through our work on word problems. We find this really difficult and have spent time as a whole class looking at strategies for working out these problems. Mrs Macdonald has been using a bar model to help us work out word problems so this is a strategy we are exploring. Krystian suggested we look at one word problem each day in maths and working with our talk partners to share ideas, this is something we will start after the Christmas holidays.

Next week we have our upper school election on the same day as the General Election – we have been working in our political parties to write a manifesto and create a party political broadcast which we will present to the upper school next week. Pupils will then complete a polling card and cast their ballot to elect the upper school prime minister.

Pupil Voice

Oliwia I learned to use the bar model for word problems, it was good.

Haseeb Word problems were quite challenging but now I’m getting used to it I’ll use bar models.

Aleks I loved PE with the nursery this week – they are funny!

Ryan T We did a new thing at Scottish Country dancing where we did a high school level dance to Cotton Eyed Joe.

Ambra I loved learning about the suffragettes – the best bit was hearing about the suffragettes telling their story, what is was like and how they were feeling.

Aria I liked trying something new for PE doing the basketball game.

Learning at home

To celebrate our Big Build team winning a runners up place in the national competition – this weekend spend some time at home discussing the different types of buldings in our local area  which ones are old, which are new, how do you know?

Thursday is the General Election – talk about where your polling station is and how you decide who to vote for. If possible, take your child to the polling station with you to give them the real life experience!

Remember to keep up to date with us on Twitter!

Nursery News

What a busy week we have had at St Ninian’s Nursery this week!

The top area is currently ‘under construction’ as the construction area has been created for the boys and girls to explore and play in. We have been so impressed with their focus, maturity and concentration in this area, especially due to the risks involved. The boys and girls show that they are able to to keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying the difficult tasks of hammering nails and using screws. We have also been working on building our vocabulary in this area by looking at the names for the different pieces of equipment. Can your child tell you anything about this area?

We have been rehearsing our lovely songs this week in preparation for special person/grandparents day next week! We won’t spoil the surprise but be assured you will be blown away 😉

In addition to our lovely singing we have bee preparing some special gifts for grandparents day too. All of our boys and girls were delighted to be involved in planting sunflowers this week! We learned about what happens to the seed when it is planted in the soil and looked after with water and sunlight – we hope to see them grow into beautiful flowers one day soon!

At our May parents night there will be an ‘Art Gallery’ set up in the infant hall which will showcase the work of none other than our very own boys and girls! We have been working hard this week to get all of our entries finished and ready to be shipped off to be professionally framed. By offering the children free choice painting for this activity it has been lovely to get a feel for their interests and capabilities in art. Well done boys and girls, superstar artists!

The PM group had a whirlwind Wednesday with no less than FOUR birthdays to celebrate! The boys and girls made a cake for their friends to share and they all enjoyed the special time they had to have songs sung for them and big birthday claps done. Our food prep Thursday snack was PIZZA this week! A rip roaring success! To make these we chose healthy options by using a wrap as a base, spreading tomato passata on and adding chees, sweetcorn, mushrooms and tomatoes to taste – the boys and girls continue to love our food prep thursday snack days!

Welly Wednesday this week involved watching traffic from the bridge and takin tally marks on a sheet! We partnered up and split the responsbilities of counting as we looked for cars, buses, bikes and lorries. We were very lucky to have lots of waves, flashing lights and beeping horns as we counted and we practised safe road crossing on our way back to nursery. We look forward to the beginning of brighter weather to increase the time spent outdoors on a welly wednesday 🙂

Have a lovely weekend!

Nursery News

What a busy week we have had, getting settled back into real life after our snow days!

The boys and girls have missed the nursery as much as the staff have missed them! And we made the most of our time this week with lots of busy, creative learning together.

Our smart board has been popular this week as the boys and girls are becoming more confident in their ict skills as they use and access the internet to play nursery rhymes and songs to sing along to. Nursery rhymes provide a great basis on which to build literacy skills, we love to sing together at group time and are learning words and actions for common nursery rhymes. The boys and girls have been able to personalise this by self selecting the songs that they like to listen to, maybe they could share some of these at home? Twinkle twinkle is a favourite!

Some of our children were exploring science activities this week, a great lead into the whole school science week next week! Some of the boys and girls were using blocks as ‘magnets’ – talking about them sticking together and pulling apart. This led to the creation of a lovely ‘magnetic investigation’ area set up with the children. Can you talk about magnets at home? Have you got anything magnetic? The children enjoyed finding things that were magnetic and were able to identify things that weren’t.

The creative area had a real buzz this week! After a quick move around of our furniture we had some makeshift floor easels which were very, very popular! The children had the opportunity to draw on large a3 sheets of paper with felt pens, a great big space to fill with ideas and imagination! We have been astounded at some of the works of art from this area this week. Sitting on cushions alongside friends, in a new space really gets the creative juices flowing!

We like to encourage children to foster their skills of independence and have given our creative area a wee makeover to help promote this – the boys and girls can access all of the creative resources in the coloured trays and are developing their sorting skills when returning the things they haven’t used. We look forward to seeing what masterpieces are created as a result of this next week!

Mrs MacDonald was hard at work on Thursday trying to source some construction materials after lots of interest in construction and home building! The ‘Book of Homes’ sparked a great discussion about what kind of homes there are in the world and how they are made and built. We couldn’t believe the sultan of Brunei has 252 toilets!!!!! Watch this space as we prepare an area for building and construction, including real tools!

A gentle reminder that our Grandparents/Special Person day is Tues 20th March where the boys and girls will prepare to give their special person a tour of our nursery before singing some songs and enjoying some cake together!

Nursery News

Wow! Has that really been a week??? How busy we have been!

Elfie our naughty elf has been hiding from us this week! He ended up playing in the flour in the kitchen and he stole Mrs Findlays socks and hid them all over the garden!! Cheeky elf! We have enjoyed talking to the boys and girls about how we are trying to make good choices and prepare for Christmas, not only for Santa coming with presents, but also for the birth of the baby Jesus.

The nativity rehearsals are well under way! We tried on our costumes on Thursday for the first time – it was so exciting! We can’t wait to show off our singing skills next THURSDAY 14th DECEMBER 10am and 2pm for our nativity show 🙂 can you please let a member of staff know how many adults you plan to bring so we can be organised for seating! We will have mince pies, cakes and refreshments available for afterwards – please stay for a festive blether and a bite to eat!

The creative juices have been flowing this week! We have made Christmas gift bags to keep all our special Christmas gifts in 🙂 we have sent home invitations to the Nativity and have talked about what we can make for next week! We have started crafting a gingerbread house on the entry to the school – so many wonderful pieces of artwork have been added as sweeties and candy canes! Someone suggested we make reindeer food so we are looking to do that in the coming week 🙂

The fundraising stall was a great success! Thank you to everyone who supported us in this venture! We have raised over £90 and will have a final total for Monday 🙂 thank you!

Next week the school is having a Christmas jumper day on Friday – we are so lucky that we can wear our Christmas jumpers ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! We would love to see children in their festive wear between now and the Christmas holidays so if they would like to come with any jumpers, tshirts, hats or headbands they are more than welcome to do that!

PM panto trip is on Tuesday – the bus will be leaving at 12.20pm – please ensure that your child is dropped off at 12pm sharp, if you haven’t paid for the panto or filled in the EE2 form please do so on Monday.

Here are the final four nativity songs for you to practice this week 🙂

An Angel Appeared in the Sky

Three Kings Were Riding

Away in a Manger

Ring out the bells

Enjoy!

P6/7 weekly update

In literacy we wrote a diary entry as if we were the main character in the story. We focused on chapter 3 this week, at the end there was a bit of a cliffhanger as Michael went overboard. We can’t wait until next week to find out what happens next… Some of us were brave enough to read our diary starters to the class to help motivate and inspire others. We even put a tweet on Twitter, Chi-Chi is famous!! Remember to follow our class @mrsroy16 as we regularly Tweet throughout the week. We also worked in teams to do some comprehension work, that was good fun!

We have been playing maths games to help us develop our understanding of place and value, eg.  maths pacman, roll the dice, roll and stick game and close to the target. Some of us also did a maths population task using the http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ website. It was really interesting as it was a live website and people were being born every second! Cole and Max also made a place value poster for the maths working wall.

Don’t forget the Sumdog Maths Contest is now live until next Thursday, points means prizes!

In PE we were doing some more rugby skills. We had the ‘ Scoop Pass’ competition, James, Nicholas, Leon and Shiv were the scooping champions this week. This game involved concentration, speed and co-odrination. We progressed onto some rugby skills focussing on the ‘back pass’, this took a few attempts to master, Leon was hilarious at this activity as he kept getting confused about when to run and when to pass.

Chi-Chi and Krzysztof were our first Lead Learners and did a great job taking responsibility for the Talking Books this week – well done guys!

Our classroom is taking shape now and there is some fabby work on display for you to see when you next visit us. Remember Ninian’s Natter is on Thursday 14th September 6-7pm if you want to drop in for a blether and some Inspirational Maths activities.

Some pupil highlights:

Cole enjoyed the maths work this week.

Chi-Chi enjoyed using the population site.

Rachel W enjoyed doing the homework challenge.

Remember next week is Inspirational Maths week so come prepared as we may be taking the learning outdoors at times. We are hoping to also start using AAL – Anytime, Anywhere Learning for those who have returned their contracts. Please load the Class Dojo and Sumdog apps onto your device if possible, both are free apps.

Have  a great weekend!

P6/7 and Mrs Roy

Time flies by in P6/7

James gave us the title of our blog this week as we discussed how quickly the week had gone.

It all started on Monday where we did some focused vocabulary work linked to our class novel, everyone agreed that it was a pretty tricky task as we had to guess what the word meant by using the text surrounding it then look up it’s actual definition in the dictionary. Do you know what these words mean – reproached and suppurating? Place value is our focus in numeracy this week and we did some paired, independent and group tasks on Monday morning using resources like dominoes and flashcards to play different games to develop our confidence in reading different numbers. The afternoon saw us being introduced to Emotion Works, a whole school HWB resource. Again we linked this to our novel and used the emotion cogs to unpick each of the characters feelings in chapter 1 whilst working in teams.

On Tuesday we were very excited to start our rugby block with Mr McCurdy and everyone came well prepared for the outdoors! We had our first numbertalks session and showed Mrs Roy our explanation skills and mathematical thinking. In our novel study we read chapter 2 and were introduced to our Blooms Superheroes which will help us develop our reading comprehension skills this year. We all chose which questions we would like to tackle and tried to match these up to the superheroes. The afternoon continued with a novel theme and we started some ‘Hokusai’ inspired pictures, we used pastels to try and recreate the famous ‘Great Waves’ painting. Mrs Roy was in awe of our artistic skills!

Writing was a focus on Thursday morning and we used a previous talk lesson linked to our novel to write a balanced argument with the title: Sailing around the world. Everyone gave it their best shot and tried to use persuasive language. In numeracy we began to split numbers and partition them, as the numbers got bigger this became more difficult. We will continue to focus on this next week.

Friday ended the week nicely as we finished our earlier art work and got to do our first Big Maths Beat that challenge. We also went outside with Mrs Roy for a fun rugby session where we learned how to play banana tig with a rugby ball and practised our passing in small teams. The sun stayed out and we didn’t get wet, so that was a bonus.

This week we also welcomed Mr Turner to our class, a 3rd year student training to be a teacher, he will continue to work alongside Mrs Roy each week to support us in our learning.

And finally, the UN Ambassador’s came round all the classes this morning to announce that we had successfully achieved the Level 2 Award for RRS. We were all really pleased especially as some of the people in our class were in that committee last year. Well done everyone!!

Pupil voice:

Louise – We played rugby and it was lots of fun.

Isla – We did Big Maths on Friday.

Amera  – Rugby was fun and wet!

Isabel – Our Kensuke’s Kingdom collage is now up on display and looks good.

Rachel H – We all dressed down today to raise money for charity.

We’re back……

Well what a great start to the year it has been, everyone has been really enthusiastic and raring to get started!

The week began with some creativity and we worked in small teams to create a class song/rap and wordle. We used the mindmaps we had made on our moving up day in June to help us. It was lovely to see the confidence in many as they stood up in front of a new class to perform. Follow us on Twitter @mrsroy16 to see some of the videos we took.

Our Wordle is now at the heart of our new class charter which has taken the theme of ‘Animals’ as voted by the class. Everyone came up with suggestions as to the content of our charter and this is now on display for all to see.

We have enjoyed taking part in the ‘Door Challenge’ this week and made an emoji themed door display. We discussed what emoji represented each of our personalities and then made mini emojis for display. They look great!

We started our class novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Murpurgo. We have listened to an audio of chapter 1 whilst following the text in our shared books. There has been lots of scope for discussion and one of the first debates we had was about sailing around the world, are you for or against? We came up with our arguments and then presented these to another group using persuasive and emotive language. Everyone thought it was great that they got to argue with one another!! We have also started creating a class collage which is coming along nicely.

Pupil Voice:

Shiv: We did face portraits with Mrs Howley.

Nicola: We did our own animals for our class charter.

Mia Sok.: This was a fun week.

Rachel W: It was a good week.

Isla: At PE with Mrs Roy we went out and played rounders.

Chi-Chi: We made emojis that represent us and put it on our door display.

Amera: I liked PE because we played rounders.

James: I enjoyed the self-portrait task because I usually don’t do that.

Nicholas: I liked drawing the animals.

Leon: This week was fun.

Isabel: An amazing start to the school year.

Rachel Mc: This week was amazing. We were making a boat and sea for display on our class novel.

Louise: We did today’s number of the day and we did it on whiteboards.

Mia St: We got to stick tissue paper to a wave outline for our display.

Have a great weekend everyone, see you next week!!
