Nursery News

What a busy week we have had, getting settled back into real life after our snow days!

The boys and girls have missed the nursery as much as the staff have missed them! And we made the most of our time this week with lots of busy, creative learning together.

Our smart board has been popular this week as the boys and girls are becoming more confident in their ict skills as they use and access the internet to play nursery rhymes and songs to sing along to. Nursery rhymes provide a great basis on which to build literacy skills, we love to sing together at group time and are learning words and actions for common nursery rhymes. The boys and girls have been able to personalise this by self selecting the songs that they like to listen to, maybe they could share some of these at home? Twinkle twinkle is a favourite!

Some of our children were exploring science activities this week, a great lead into the whole school science week next week! Some of the boys and girls were using blocks as ‘magnets’ – talking about them sticking together and pulling apart. This led to the creation of a lovely ‘magnetic investigation’ area set up with the children. Can you talk about magnets at home? Have you got anything magnetic? The children enjoyed finding things that were magnetic and were able to identify things that weren’t.

The creative area had a real buzz this week! After a quick move around of our furniture we had some makeshift floor easels which were very, very popular! The children had the opportunity to draw on large a3 sheets of paper with felt pens, a great big space to fill with ideas and imagination! We have been astounded at some of the works of art from this area this week. Sitting on cushions alongside friends, in a new space really gets the creative juices flowing!

We like to encourage children to foster their skills of independence and have given our creative area a wee makeover to help promote this – the boys and girls can access all of the creative resources in the coloured trays and are developing their sorting skills when returning the things they haven’t used. We look forward to seeing what masterpieces are created as a result of this next week!

Mrs MacDonald was hard at work on Thursday trying to source some construction materials after lots of interest in construction and home building! The ‘Book of Homes’ sparked a great discussion about what kind of homes there are in the world and how they are made and built. We couldn’t believe the sultan of Brunei has 252 toilets!!!!! Watch this space as we prepare an area for building and construction, including real tools!

A gentle reminder that our Grandparents/Special Person day is Tues 20th March where the boys and girls will prepare to give their special person a tour of our nursery before singing some songs and enjoying some cake together!

As we prepare for returning to school this week, don’t forget to make the most of this extreme weather as this is the type of things that make memories to last a lifetime.

Get a head start –

Writing – When we return to school we will be completing a personal piece of writing all about our time off school during these snow days.  We will be writing about all the different activities that you got up to (both inside and outside) and what we liked and disliked about having so much snow.  You could start to think about what you will write in your story.

Spelling – also on or return we will be going over our key words again and looking to see how many you can remember how to spell without checking.  you could prepare for this by using the key word lists you have at home.

Numeracy – we will revise again our knowledge of the coins we use in everyday life and complete some simple calculations with these, this will also help us look at the numbers to 100 too.  Also we will be rounding up our work on division (grouping).

Topic – This week we will begin to look at modern transport with a particular focus on Space Travel.  Much of our work will be about rockets, and hopefully we will get a chance to use materials to design our own rocket model.

P2/3 Snowy Day Tasks – Friday 2nd March

Good morning everyone!  Here are some more activities you might like to try today.

Well done to all the children who have sent in pictures of what you have been doing.  It is lovely to see all of your activities.

I’ve set up a new snowy day challenge on Sumdog which runs for today only.  Log in and try to earn an extra 250 coins.

Draw a picture of yourself in the snow and write a few sentences underneath to describe your picture.  You can bring it in to school on Monday.

Why not try some baking?  I’m going to do some baking later and I’ll share my picture on Class Dojo.  You’ll need to read your recipe and measure your ingredients.

Read lots of books or if you prefer listen to online audio books http://www.storylineonline.net/ Primary 3 children can also update their Reading Passports. Primary 2 children can keep a note of books read and we’ll add them to our class chart next week.

Stay safe in the snow.

  • Create a timetable to show your snow day activities. How long do you spend doing each thing? Make up 8 questions to go with your timetable.

Numeracy:

  • We have been working on Algebra and number patterns. Create your own equations or number patterns for someone else to solve! Remember you will need the answers.
  • Head over to Sumdog – I’ve added a snow day challenge for you!
  • Or try countdown at home, can you beat the adults?:  https://nrich.maths.org/6499

P6/7 Snow Day

Hi everyone!

Hope you are all staying safe and warm on this snowy day. I have been keeping in contact with you all via Classdojo and keeping an eye out for any tasks you have completed so far.

Here are some extra activities which you might enjoy:

Literacy/Technology: write a blog post detailing your ‘Snow Day’ off school, include ambitious vocabulary and any of our BOOST words we’ve learned so far.

Numeracy: https://nrich.maths.org/6499

Use this link to play Countdown and try to see if you can beat the grown-ups!! Let me know your solutions and post them on the blog/dojo or email them to me.

Art: Go for a walk and look around, what do you see, recreate this image in a piece of artwork using any material of your choice. Rachel Mc has already had a go at making a snowflake. The link is on our Winter Ready class page.

Daily Mile: Get outdoors and do your daily mile in the snow. I managed 2.5 miles this morning with my 2 girls. Take a selfie and send it to me.

P2-Learning-Adventure Term 3

If you click on the link above you will see an overview of the learning we have been covering so far this term.

Here are some optional activities you can try out because we cannot get into school,

Get active – use these two links to participate in physical activity indoors (it’s very cold to be outside all day!) whilst you learn; numbers to 100 or simple Spanish vocabulary

Numeracy – using concrete material (cubes/coins/counters/lego bricks etc) work on the following problem,

Mrs Purdie wants to give four teachers some extra things for their classrooms; three pencils, three rubbers, three rulers and three glue sticks.  Using the list below can you work out if she has enough of each item and tell her how many more she needs to buy?

Pencils = 12        Rubbers = 11         Rulers = 9            Glue Sticks = 4

Numeracy – Don’t forget to log onto Sumdog to complete the challenge and extend your skill levels.

Literacy – World Book day – Choose your favourite book and create something great from it!  Some examples, make a puppet of one of the characters; design a new front cover for it; write what might happen next if there was to be a follow up book;  act out the story for your family.

Literacy – Can you make these snowy sentences amazing! (Use interesting openers, boost words, add a connective to extend the sentence, use adjectives to describe things more.)

  1. The snow was falling from the sky.
  2. The children made a snowman.
  3. The car was stuck.

RE – Complete an act of kindness for someone.  Some examples, help someone clear a path in the snow, put food and water out for the birds, say a prayer for those who are less fortunate than ourselves during this cold weather.

If you choose to complete any of these activities please use dojo, reply to this blog or just tell me about it in school.
