Day 2 at Ford Castle

Day 2 has been excellent!!

We had a very wet morning which made lots of our activities very muddy! But the same came out this afternoon which was even better!

Groups B and C  took part in survival today – most muddy awards go to Zara, Kalin and Paige!! (Apologies in advance for the VERY dirty clothing).

All groups have now taken part in a wide range of activities with everyone making it over the zipline and working together to build the highest crate stacks. We had to follow lots of instructions during our fencing session and everyone took part in a duel! We have also all taken part in a photo trail of Ford village and learned lots about the local history. Everyone is building on their teamwork skills and overcoming fears! The pupils have been encouraging each other to push themselves and we are all having a great time!

Miss Diamond worked with those in the cooking club tonight to make their Banoffee Sundaes.

Pupil Voice:

Lewis –  Today we did crate stacking and it was really  fun and scary.

Rachel M – We did zip-lining today and it was one of my favourite activities so far. I was absolutely petrified, but after I tried it I loved it!

Grace-Today we were with an instructor called Sam and we did an activity where we made shelters and made a fire.

Jay-P – Today we did fencing we did four games and I really enjoyed it

Charlie: Today I have Enjoyed doing create stack I did it with Sarah and we managed to climb on top of 12 create.

Day 1 at Ford Castle

We arrived safely at Ford Castle and have had a jam packed first day!

Group A have been in the words for Survival! They all enjoyed den building and making fires. Lorena was first to fall face first in the mud! They also took part in a photo trail of Ford village.

Groups B and C enjoyed a castle tour, archery and zip lining! Everyone made it across the zip line – even Miss Diamond and Miss McCormack!

Some pupils found it tricky to make their own beds but eventually all dorms are now ready for sleeping in!

We all enjoyed a lovely dinner and even had some free time to explore the castle grounds and play games.

Now on to our last activity for tonight – Grail Hunt!

We will update at the end of each day (internet connection permitting).

Hopefully everyone will have a good sleep tonight after such a busy first day!

** issues uploading photos – will do our best to get them up tomorrow! **

Have your say! How can we use PEF to support all children and families at St Ninian’s?

Last year we received £63,000 funding from the Scottish Government’s Pupil Equity Fund to help close the poverty related attainment gap.

We used this money to:-

  • Have an extra support for learning teacher (Mrs Scott) to provide extra literacy and numeracy support in all classes
  • Employ a Polish Pupil Support Worker to support children who are learning English
  • Run a PEEP (family learning) class for parents and nursery children
  • Reduce the cost of after school clubs, camps and trips
  • Employ a Speech & Language therapist to work with identified groups of children from nursery – P3
  • Provide high quality professional learning for all staff.
  • Purchase new writing resources for P1-7 to improve children’s attainment in writing
  • Employ an extra teacher to support us with Number Talks across P1-7
  • Purchase a numeracy home learning kit for P2-4 pupils – these will be launched in August
  • Purchase new netbooks and iPads for each class

We will receive £60,000 PEF funding this year.

What do you think our school should STOP, START and CONTINUE to do to help all our children make progress and to support all families?

Nursery News

We are fast approaching the end of May !!! and what a week we’ve had!

Pond visits, Library visits and Parent consultations all go go go.

Monday was a holiday and we landed straight into Tuesday with a visit to the Lanthorn Library. The children sit and listen to a book then have the opportunity to choose a book of their own to have a look at. Children are then invited to share their learning and stand up in front of the group to talk about what they have read. On the way home from the pond we popped over to check on our baby Cygnets. They were in the water already!!

Our teaching student Miss Young joined us this morning for a two week placement, I’m sure she will love her St Ninian’s Nursery experience as much as we do.

On Wednesday we had another visit to the Swans, but this time we took them some sweet corn.  We had to be very quiet and very respectful as the Swans were very anxious with us beside the Cygnets.

Parent Consultations were very well attended and a great success. Thank you all so much for your continued support and kindness over the last session.

Thursday is P.E day with Mr McCurdy, today we were practicing throwing a bean bag and the correct stance needed to throw them a long way.

Friday gave us the chance to watch the mini glee club perform their latest songs. We all had great fun listening and watching the children sing so beautifully!!

Have a great weekend everyone lots of smiles and laughter from the Nursery Team xxx

P2 Update

It has been a week of highlights this week in P2.

One of the major standout moments has been our trip to the Owl Centre at Polkemmet park on Wednesday.  The children all really enjoyed their time there and seem to have learned so much.  I have enjoyed listening to their stories and facts and I’m just sorry that I missed the trip due to illness, next time!  However after reading all the stories they have written following this trip I feel as if I was there.  Well done everyone.

This week saw two important dates in our school calendar.  All week it has been Digital Learning Week and also on Wednesday it was National Numeracy Day.  Read on to see how we marked these two occasions.

Digital Learning Week – we used a website based programme called Kahoot and completed an owl quiz using it.  It was such fun because we were in teams (collaborating and using our leadership skills) and each team had a laptop which was linked wirelessly to our class smartboard.  We had to choose an answer to a question using our laptop screen and this automatically registered on the smartboard in class.  We enjoyed it so much we played it twice!  A brilliant way to link our learning across the curriculum and to use technology to support us.

National Numeracy Day – Do you know that we can use our ten fingers to count to 1000?  If you don’t believe us just ask us to show you, we are amazing at counting in 100s!

Have a lovely long weekend.

Primary 6 Weekly Round up!

What a busy week!

Some of our highlights have included;

Jan; I’ve enjoyed learning how to make good iMovies!

Vanesa; I enjoyed missing number sums in maths

Marcella; I loved sprinting at PE!

Zayah; I found PE tricky because I got tired…

Ryan; Aidan P’s mistake of the week made me think…

Joshua; I think it was writing about Our Lady of Fatima (that was my favourite too – Jospeh)

We were delighted to welcome so many of our parents and carers to our Global Goals showcase this week! We will be working next week to upload the videos to our One Note profiles so you can access these at home if you weren’t able to make it on thursday!

P6 talked today about being connected – as we learn about Building Resilience Mrs Purdie has asked that all children bring in a photo or drawing of their ‘champion’ – a family member who looks out for them, helps them etc 🙂

Enjoy the long weekend!

NURSERY NEWS

What a wonderful week we have had in the nursery this week. The weather has been fantastic and has given us all great fun experiences in our garden and out to the trim trail.

Come back and play has been a great success thanks to all of the parents and carers who found the time to come along and share our learning in the nursery.

Our area manager Miss McClory was around this week and will be next week too. She is loving her time in our nursery and loves welly Wednesday!!

The children moving on to P1 had transition on Monday. The groups visited both classrooms and were given the experience of literacy and numeracy activities with Miss Boyes and Mrs Davenport.

We celebrated Sophia’s 4th birthday on Monday too.

Welly Wednesday was a bit different this week we had a play on our Trim trail track at the front of the school. We then had a picnic snack in the sunshine. Please remember to apply sunscreen at this time of the year and a hat to keep them safe.

The Swans have had Babies!! We had a walk along on Friday to see how many and give them some of our left over snack. We had a look on our smart board to find out what Cygnets like to eat. We found out they like to have sweetcorn. The children will visit the local shop next week to buy some to take with us on Welly Wednesday. The female Swan is called a ‘pen’ and the male is a ‘cob’ and they eat sweetcorn 🙂

Have a fantastic fun filled weekend!! Remember Monday is a Holiday and we will see you all back here on Tuesday xx
