Literacy

We have been learning the ‘w’ sound this week. This is a red sound which comes from our lips. We are continuing to consolidate our understanding of the ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ sounds too. Some of our literacy activities:

  • spelling words with the ‘w’ sound in them
  • playing snap, all cards had pictures of something that begins with the letter ‘w’.
  • developing our letter formation to form the ‘w’ sound correctly. We have also been practising the formation of the d and g sounds too.

Numeracy

We are continuing our subtraction topic in class. This week we have been learning how to use different strategies to solve subtraction problems. We can use our fingers to solve subtraction stories or by putting a number in our head and counting back.

IDL

One of our learning highlights this week has been learning about Edinburgh Castle. We loved learning about the different famous features at Edinburgh Castle. We learned about – castle rock, Mon’s Meg, one o’clock gun and the stone of destiny. We are in the middle of creating leaflets about Edinburgh Castle to share our knowledge with others. You will also receive your invitation for our Castle Banquet next week. We will be hosting our banquet on Wednesday 4th March at 2pm.

Primary 6/7 Weekly News

Learning update for the past 2 weeks in primary 6/7.

Learning Overview
Last week we visited Sky Skills Studios. Each group worked together to create a movie trailer. They were all great and everyone learned loads about movie making. We all got given a USB at the end so we can watch our trailers at home.

We also had volunteers from The Royal Bank of Scotland visiting us to help us with a MoneySense workshop. We worked in groups to solve a case of fraud. We looked in to why it is very important to keep all our personal details safe and what information we should and should not share with others. It was great fun. Our volunteers also answered lots of questions about working in the bank and what they do everyday.

This week in P.E we did gymnastics routines with a theme that was supposed to be guessed by our P.E teacher Mr. Cummings

Team 1: Floor is lava
Team 2: James Bond
Team 3: Ninja
Team 4: Video Games

In art we were getting ready for Fairtrade fortnight! We made Fairtrade logos for the Fairtrade assembly and looked up some Fairtrade foods we could bring in for our tuck shop therefore our school is making a tuck shop.

In maths we have finished our fractions, decimals and percentages work and have started looking at time. We will continue to work on time in the upcoming weeks.

In literacy we have continued with our group novels and class novel. We have started looking at discussions in writing and will write our own next week.

Pupil Voice

Home Learning
The pupils have been enjoying learning outdoors this term. They have asked for their home learning activities to be outdoor this week! (good luck)
Weather depending…. Wrap up warm and go for a walk outside. We have been focusing on taking a moment to help deal with emotions during our building resilience lessons. Being outdoors is a great way to focus and reconnect with ourselves and each other. Spend some time outside and have a chat about the learning we have been doing. If you live close by the pupils can even show you their clan tree!

Have a great weekend!!!

P2/1 Update

Over View Of Learning

We have been learning about Sir Walter Scott as part of our new topic to do with historical people linked to Livingston.  Sir Walter Scott died when he was 61 years old and he was born in Edinburgh in 1771.  He was a famous writer and the street names in Dedridge are named after characters and places in his books.

We have been revising our key words this week and we have been continuing to improve our letter formation, P2 have even been joining up their writing!

In our Numeracy P1 have been continuing to explore the many different ways they can do subtraction calculations.  P2 were dividing using the grouping strategy.

Home Learning

For P1 and P2 try out these problem solving question which will need you to use grouping.

P2 – If there were 20 children in a class how many different ways could the teacher equally group the children?

P1 – For P1 write down as many take away calculations as you can that start with 10.

Pupil Voice

Adam – I really liked doing the problem solving challenge in class using grouping.

P5 Weekly News

Learning Highlights

In art this week we have been learning about Fairtrade and were making the Fairtrade logo using collage.

In PE, we have been doing themes, sequences and routines using the apparatus. We had to use our imagination to come up with ideas and then use our teamwork skills to work together to create the final product.

In maths, we have been learning about fractions. We have been trying to find of an amount or quantity. We started with basic fractions and have developed onto finding more difficult fractions.

In writing, we have been writing an explanation about the life cycle of a frog. We had to make sure our text had a title, an identifying statement, an explanation sequence and a summary statement. We had to use verbs and sequential language and make sure it was written in the present tense.

In RE, we have been learning about St. Bernadette. We were learning about her feast day and her life. Did you know that Mary appeared to her 18 times?

Pupil Voice

“I liked doing PE because it was fun doing gymnastics!” – Madison

“I liked doing the Fairtrade logo.” – Alishba

“I liked doing fractions in maths, it was a bit tricky but fun!” – Maeve

“I enjoyed doing gymnastics because we had to do a theme.” – Oma

“I liked doing writing because it was really fun learning about the life cycle of a frog because most of the parts I didn’t know before!” – Angelina

Parental Involvement

We would like to learn about the life cycle of another animal so if our parents could give us an animal to research we could learn about it.

We would also like to try and buy as many Fairtrade products as we can wen doing our food shop with our families. Why not add a photo to one note profile to show us the Fairtrade products you buy.

Have a great weekend, P5 and Mrs Diamond.

P2/1 Update

Overview Of Learning

In numeracy and maths we have been learning about money.

P1 have been identifying the coins up to 10p.  They have been adding up 1ps and 2ps together.

P2 have been identifying the coins to 20p/50p.  They have been adding together different amounts up to £1.

Both groups have also been identifying that there are different variations in which coins you can use to make a given amount.  See the home learning section for some ideas as to how to continue this skill at home.

For Science/STEM topic this week we have been focusing on magnets.  The children have all been given opportunities at Smart Start to explore and discover magnets and magnetic forces.  This week we took this discovery learning a step further and explored the investigation skill of prediction when completing a magnetic/non-magnetic exercise.  The children had to say if they thought a certain object would be attracted to the magnet or not and then actually test it to see if their prediction was correct.  The children very quickly predicted that objects that were made from metal were attracted to the magnet but then they found out that not all metals will do this!  We had a big question at the start of the lesson, will the can of cola be attracted to the magnet?

Home Learning

If you have a magnet at home (even a fridge magnet will work) try out your own investigation of materials that are magnetic and non magnetic at home, don’t forget to predict first.

Practise using money, next time you are at the shop encourage your child to have a go at counting out an amount (within £1) to pay for an item.  It is always good to model some different coin combinations that can make a given amount.

Pupil Voice

Mason and Julian received the HT Golden Ticket this week for their outstanding contributions to our magnet lesson.  They are tasked with visiting either Mrs Smith or Mrs Roy and to explain to them our learning from this lesson. (They will complete this mission next week)

P7 Weekly Round Up

What a busy week we have had, but what a fantastic amount of learning we have squeezed in!

Weekly Highlights

Literacy – We had an amazing writing session on Tuesday where we stepped into the character of Graham from our class novel. We imagined what Graham would feel like and what might prompt him to run away from home. There were so many excellent examples we will spend some time next week adding them to our excellent examples literacy wall.

Numeracy – This week some of us have been testing out our growth mindset to the extreme as we try to get our head around long multiplication. The steps involved in the algorithm method can be quite confusing. We are looking at using different methods to help us learn it but we will continue to work on this together!

HWB – Our new unit of Building Resilience is ‘Take a Moment’ – we had a great class discussion centred around the feeling of stress and what it looks like/feels like/sounds like for different people. Please use the home guidance sheet issued for homework to support your child in their emotional literacy and building resilience.

Pupil Voice

Joshua – ‘I liked gymnastics this week because we used different equipment like the vault.’

Zainab – ‘The sky studios trip was really good. We made a trailer.’

Marcella – ‘I liked the sky studios trip. It was fun and we all made our own trailers. We learned about things like special effects.’

Brooke – ‘I learned how to work a camera at Sky Studios.’

Mirren – ‘I liked going to the NHS careers fair and seeing how many jobs there are.’

Harley – ‘At the careers fair I learned there’s a ‘gammy foot shop’ (which we think is the mobility shop on further discussion…) in livi that helps people.’

Home Learning

In light of our current learning about what stress feels like please take some time this weekend to explore some of the Take a Moment resources as a family. Watch this clip as a family and use it to prompt discussion about what brings stress and how you deal with it, we talked about some stresses which come and go quickly and others that hang around for a while. Next week we will look at positive steps we can take to react to those stressful moments – practical ways to ‘take a moment’ – click below to access the video…

We calculated interest rates on credit cards using our knowledge of percentages. We have been revising multiplication this week, challenging ourselves to multiplying larger numbers.

Literacy
In writing this week we were working on explanation. We explained how energy is transferred and how all energy comes from the sun.
Private Peaceful reading group are continuing to analyse the text and build up an understanding of the characters.
Wilderness reading group carried out research on Lapland as the characters are about to go on an adventure there. They created leaflets for tourists with information on places to visit and how to get there.

Outdoor Learning
We continued our outdoor learning in our Literacy Clans this week. We visited our clan trees and created group poems about our trees. We have added our poems to our class display.

Science
We learned how to make a series circuit. We used wires, batteries, switches and bulbs. We built the circuits and then drew diagram using the component symbols. We can explain the energy transfers that take place in the components.

Pupil Voice

At the careers  fair we went round different people with different NHS jobs and learned a lot about how to help old or young people get up if they have fallen or of they’re choking or something.
My favourite part of the careers fair was the occupational therapy because we put on rubber gloves and tried to open up a lolly to see how hard it was for people with arthritis – Shannon
At the careers fair I enjoyed going round all the stations learning about all the different NHS jobs – Aidan
Inside the careers fair building the station I enjoyed the most was the occupational therapist: you had two games to show what it’s like to have either one hand or a jumbled up memory. First there was a game to try and open a tub with one hand, next was a memory game, you would get shown items then one would be taken away, you would then have to say which one was taken away. Over all it was really enjoyable – Joshua
I really enjoyed writing about energy transfer because I got to learn about science which is my favourite subject -Kacper
I loved the NHS careers because I got to see all sorts of therapists which is the career I would love to have as an adult-Jan

Home Learning

Continue to revise multiplication strategies at home. Try to use the grid method and standard written method to check your answers.

Next week we will be focusing on internet safety. Please take this opportunity to discuss staying safe online with your children, especially safe and responsible use of social media. There are resources available here: https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-centre/parents-and-carers/resources-parents-and-carers

A reminder that next week we will be continuing with outdoor learning on Monday and visiting Sky Skills Studios on Thursday.

Have a great weekend!

Our Learning

Literacy

We have been continue to consolidate our knowledge of the ai, oa, ee and oo sounds. We have been spelling, reading and ordering sentences with these sounds in them. It can be tricky to distinguish between these sounds but we are trying very hard with this. New sounds will be sent home in sounds folder after the February break. We have started to learn about writing instructions and this week we wrote a set of instructions about brushing your teeth. We were learning that we don’t use the words ‘I’ or ‘my’ when writing instructions.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about measure. We have been learning about measuring height, length, weight and volume. We have been comparing objects using words like taller, shorter, longest, shortest, heaviest, lightest, biggest and smallest. We were using non-standard units of measure such as pegs and cubes to measure our friends and objects in our classroom.

Our Learning Highlights

Lucy: I liked PE and balancing on the mats. I balanced with 1 hand and 2 feet on the floor.

Sophie J: I liked the red rainbow learning and you had to measure how heavy something was.

Max: I liked jumping off the box in PE. I remembered to have squishy knees.

Chloe: I liked the green rainbow learning you had to measure how long things are. We used the pegs to measure. The smart board was the longest thing I found.

Mason: I liked RE and learning about Jesus helping people turn water into wine.

Parental Involvement

This week in our literacy, we completed a word search with some ai and oa words. Have a go at making your own word search using this generator:
