P1 Mrs Davenport Friday 1.5.20

Happy Friday everyone!

Please remember that there will be no blog on Monday and Tuesday next week as these would be days that we would not have been in school.  So check back in on Wednesday and I will have a short version of our learning grid for you to work on over the three days.

Self-assessment strategy today is traffic light system.

Literacy

Well done to everyone who logged onto our new reading resource and had a go at reading the book allocated to them and completing the activities.  Well done.  Next week you will have a new book allocated to you, so check it out on Wednesday.

For word boost you had these four words, did you work out what they mean?

announce – to make a statement about something and give information

expect – waiting for something you know will happen

eager – very enthusiastic about something

a task –  a job you have been given to complete

Numeracy

How did you get on with your time worksheet?

IDL

Did you get a chance to complete the water activity this week?

If you put water into the freezer it turns to ice.

If you boil water in a kettle some of it turns to steam.

Water is a liquid. Ice is a solid. Steam is a gas.

Have a lovely weekend.

It was lovely to speak to some of you on the phone this week, for those who had a voicemail service I left a message if I wasn’t able to get through to you.

NHS Speech and Language Advice 30.4.20

Today’s focus from the NHS Speech and Language Facebook page is focussing on Listening and Talking. Listening and attention skills are one of the key parts of our overall Literacy and Language areas of CfE. They are important for your child to help with their social skills, understanding of language, following instructions, learning to communicate, developing speech sounds and all areas of their learning.

The website below shares some great ideas to help support your child with listening and talking and is definitely worth a look.

www.lets-talk.scot.nhs.uk

Please see below ideas suggestions for you to use with your child to help support them with their speech sounds:

  • Play musical bumps or statues. These are also examples of games we play in Nursery and School.
  • Get your child to spot the mistake. You could use their favourite song or nursery Rhyme and make a deliberate mistake. See can your child recognise the mistake you have made or the word you have left out.
  • Play games where your child must wait for you to say go before they take part. An example is building a tower of bricks where your child cannot knock it down until you say Go!
  • Use a noisy toy and get your child to follow the noise by hiding the toy or object.

As always have a go and try them out. If you have any other ideas that you use at home please share these also.

Have a great day everyone,

Mrs Docherty

Good Morning Primary 3,

It was so lovely to speak to some of you and your families yesterday. You have all been working very hard. I am so proud at how well you managing with your home learning.

I hope you are all enjoying your tasks this week. How are you getting on with finding some examples of tiling? Maybe you could share some of them with us on the blog post or on your online profile.

Here are some additional tasks for you to try this week. Remember these are optional and you do not have to complete these. Make sure you are taking plenty of breaks and not having too much screen time.

Maths

You have been learning about tiling this week. You can make some beautiful tiling patterns. Can you create a card for someone to make them smile with a tiling pattern on the front? You could colour in the pattern using all the colours of the rainbow. This could be for someone at home, a neighbour or someone in your close family or friends.  Here are some examples of a tiling pattern.

Literacy

There is a Sumdog Spelling Challenge for you to complete.  It will help you to learn your weekly spelling pattern.

How are you getting on with your number talks this week?

I have been using the link below to create different ways to make 8 on a rekenrek.

https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/number-rack/

However, I haven’t managed to finish creating 8. Can you look at the pictures below and help me finish my number racks to make 8.

Literacy

Try playing this listening and talking game with your family.

Good News/Bad News

Someone starts the game by giving some made up good news. E.g. My friend Sam won the lottery. The next person adds to the story with bad news. E.g. But he lost the ticket. Then it goes back to good new again. E.g. It was OK because his dad had the ticket. Continue with the good news/bad news etc. model to create a silly story!

It is important that you listen carefully to what has been said in the story so you can add the next part – have fun!

Numeracy

Use this link below to access a time game or search for the game in your search bar by typing ‘topmarks matching pairs time’. On this game I suggest selecting the 3rd option “analogue to words” and clicking the “o’clock” button. Can you match the times? Good luck!

You could try making your own survey at home to find out which flavour of ice cream is the most popular in your household. You can even ask toys or teddies. Here is an example for how you could lay out your survey:

Be careful of the spelling of flavour, this example was made in America!

Can you spot the mistakes in these sentences? As an extension you  could write the sentences with the mistakes corrected. Ask someone at home to look over your work or post it in the comments section of this blog.

NHS Speech and Language Advice 29.4.20

Following on from Monday’s Speech and Language advice I have included ideas on how to support your child with speech sounds. This was shared on the NHS Lothians Speech and Language Therapy on Facebook.

https://en-gb.facebook.com/NHSLothianSLT/

Please see below ideas and  suggestions from NHS Lothians for you to use with your child to help support them with their speech sounds:

  • Hide objects or pictures in a sensory box (a box filled with feathers, leaves, popcorn kernels, ripped up paper etc) – every time your child finds an object/picture they should practise saying the word.
  • Use any fun turn-taking game – every time your child takes a turn they should practise a word.
  • Take turns naming a picture and then posting the picture into the box
  • Take turns to throw a bean bag/ball into a box, choose a picture/object from the box and practise the word.
  • For all these activities you can use objects around the house or cut out pictures from magazines/newspapers etc, that begin with the sound your child finds difficult.

Please use the comments box if you have tried any of these ideas and let us know how you got on.

Have a great day everyone,

Mrs Docherty
