A Tricky Week for P2M

This week in P2M we haven’t had any reading books, however we have been working really hard with our tricky words. Have a look at some of the different activities we have been doing.

We play a game on the ipads which helps us to read tricky words. We love trying to beat our best ever score on this game.WP_20160217_13_35_08_Pro

WP_20160217_13_35_31_Pro

We have also been using our POP game. In this game we have to choose a piece of popcorn and read the word on that piece. If you read it correctly you get to keep it, the person with the most popcorn at the end wins.

WP_20160217_13_35_22_Pro

We have also been playing a tricky words snakes and ladders game. We have to work in pairs on this task and peer assess of our partner managed to read that word correctly.

WP_20160217_13_35_43_Pro

We have also been working on our vowel house. We are now learning alternative vowel patterns and it was time for us to complete an updated vowel house which included these. Miss Meechan covered the big vowel house so we couldn’t peek at it!WP_20160217_13_35_56_Pro

We love word twister in this class. The words on the twister mat were all of our spelling words from last week which had the ‘y’ and ‘igh’ sound. We are now ready to add these to our tricky words wall in the classroom. When we play this game we count how many words we read correctly using tally marks and the winner gets a dojo point.

Successful learners in P1R

This week in literacy we introduced a really tricky sound, ‘qu’, the children enjoyed learning a little rhyme to help them remember the rule when writing qu. If you click on the link you can learn the rule too!

QU rhyme

Here are some pictures of the children showing off their spelling skills!

In maths we decided to revise all the concepts taught so far, the children amazed me at how much they have learned and remembered! They enjoyed revising addition, subtraction and money using a variety of activities during carousel time – smartboard games, money sorting, smartpal worksheets, using the rekenrek, question time, etc.

The theme for Religious Education this week was Lent, the children learned about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. On Shrove Tuesday we enjoyed learning about celebrations around the world and thought it was really funny that in France and USA it is called ‘Mardi Gras’ which translates as ‘fat or grease Tuesday’. We had the opportunity to try some pancakes with our favourite topping, chocolate sauce!! I was really proud of how well they all participated in our whole school Ash Wednesday Mass, it was lovely to see so many children joining in with their prayers and mass responses.

Technology was a whole school focus and we decided to look at food technology but with a pirates twist! We learned about how to prepare our work surface for making different foods, how to prepare ourselves and how to safely use utensils. We enjoyed making treasure map pizzas and pirate ships. Some of us also did some extra food technology at home and made pirate snacks for Friday morning, thanks to Harry and James for making everyone a pirate cake, they were yummy!!

We also had a visitor called Sharon who works in the construction industry. She showed us lots of pictures of different buildings and we were able to link this to previous learning by telling her about different materials they were made from. She set us a challenge in teams to copy a building she had made using bricks, this was really good fun and all teams managed the challenge! To finish off we had a go at P4 work, yes you heard us right, P4 work!! We were able to build a city using co-ordinates and a grid. Thanks Sharon!

Safer Internet Day was on Tuesday and we watched an animation which taught how us about how to stay safe on the internet, we were all really sensible and identified what we should do if people were being mean to us online.

It was also lovely to see our nursery friends as they celebrated Chinese New Year, they certainly celebrated loudly as we could hear them before we could see them! Next week we are going to visit both morning and afternoon groups to teach them how to use the ipads in preparation for when they come to big school.

A Fun Filled Technologies Week!

We have had a fun filled technologies week in P1D. We have loved learning about food technology where we made treasure map pizzas and cheese and apple pirate ships! There is no end to our creativity.

We had a special visitor from Morrison construction called Sharon. She told us all about her job and even let us help her design and build a new city! How cool!

We have had lots of fun revisiting different maths concepts this week and you would have been so impressed with how much we have remembered!  We have enjoyed using different materials to explore numbers including rekenreks, ten frames and our favourite is our hidden bunny ears!

We have come on leaps and bounds in gymnastics. Our skills, control, balance and confidence has grown so much during this block. We have some very talented gymnasts in our class.

We have been preparing for Lent this week. We thoroughly enjoyed Shrove Tuesday and loved having a tasty little pancake. We participated well in the whole school Ash Wednesday mass.

We would like to thank you for your support at home with this weeks food technology homework! We loved showing off our Pirate snacks to one another!

Have a great weekend!

Miss Diamond and P1D.

P2M Weekly News

P2M have had a great week and have really enjoyed learning about technologies as part of ‘technology week’.

Our number concept this week has been ‘odd and even’ numbers. We used lots of socks to help us with this. If we had 3 socks, 2 of them would be paired and there would be one odd sock, which mean that 3 is an odd number.

We played an online game about odd and even numbers. Have a go at this at home:

Odd and Even

Katie said: “2 is an even number so 32 is an even number too.”

Alexis said: “1 is an odd number.”

Sophie D said: “3 is an odd number.”

Teegan said: “9 is an odd number so 19 is an odd number too.”

We loved our trip to the apple store on Tuesday.

Jack said his favourite part of the trip was “getting t-shirts.”

Maliha said “I liked getting the wristbands with photos.”

Bartosz said: “I liked throwing the aeroplanes.”

Richard said: “I liked recording the planes flying.”

Have you checked out all of our pictures on facebook?

When we came back from the apple store we continued the technologies theme by looking at internet safety. We learned about how to stay safe on the internet. Ask your child how to stay safe online.

We also completed a food technologies task. As it was pancake day we were given pancakes and we had to choose a tasty topping for the pancakes.

Sophie YM said: “I put chocolate on my pancake, it was really tasty.”

We also learned about what ingredients were needed to make pancakes.

Pawel remembered that you need “eggs and milk to make pancakes.”

Huda said “I put a smiley face on my play-doh pancake.”

WP_20160209_14_37_15_Pro WP_20160209_14_44_16_Pro WP_20160209_14_50_43_Pro WP_20160209_14_51_16_Pro

We have also began our multiplication topic this week. We have done this by putting objects into different groups.

Sophie R said: “we had to count how many were altogether in the different groups.”

Michael said: “If you have 4 groups of 2 that is the same as 2 groups of 4 because they are switchers.”

Emily said: “I made 6 groups of 5 and there were 30 altogether.”

WP_20160210_13_45_35_Pro WP_20160210_13_45_49_Pro

We have also began a new ‘maths topic’ this week. This topic focuses around money. The first week of this topic we have been working on adding together a range of different prices of objects. We set up a shop to help us with this.

Jack said: “We had to add items together, I bought beans and a book and had to add them. I added 30p and 50p, this was easy because 5+3=8 so 50p+30p+80p.” – Super maths Jack!!

Robbie said: “there was a shopkeeper who had to figure out the sum.”

Have a lovely long weekend and I will see you all on Wednesday.

Miss Meechan

Sair fingers all round in primary 3!

We are still working hard on our Scotland topic. At the start of the week we listened to the poem ‘The sair finger’. We practiced saying it to each other in our groups. We all found this poem so funny, it must be the Scots language! We love hearing all the funny words!

At the end of the week we had Miss Smyth and she continued with our Scotland topic and we looked at the life and times of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We watched a wee video clip and then started to create our very own Rennie Mackintosh inspired artwork. We were very impressed with ourselves as we learned that he liked to draw using geometric shapes. So far they are looking fabulous. We’ll share them with you when we finish .

Next week we are very excited as we have some of the teachers in our school coming in to work with us, they are in for an absolute treat, as it’s technology week as well! We have a trip to West Lothian College to their engineering department! We’ll keep you posted on how our trip goes! 😃

Have a great weekend!

Miss Smyth and primary 3.

Nursery News

This week in Nursery we have been learning about Chinese New Year which is celebrated on Monday 8th February. We listened to a story about how the years are named after different animals and had the opportunity to make Chinese drums. Our Chinese restaurant has also been busy with lots of cooking and writing down food orders. More exciting things are planned for Monday so watch this space.

In our Outdoor learning we have been using our new gardening tools to dig up the soil and see what we can discover. No treasure yet unfortunately!  We are planning on buying all in one suits for the children to enable them to go outside regularly to experience all the benefits of  learning outdoors.

Some of our AM children used their artistic skills to paint or colour in self portraits. Our responsive planning took on rockets too this week when some children decided they wanted to make their own rockets and then continued on to construct a super big one so they could travel to the moon wearing their moon boots and masks. They then watched a clip of Tim Peake on the Smartboard. Perhaps we may have a future astronaut in our Nursery!

We had a special treat at story time on Thursday afternoon when the children listened to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff in both English and Polish read by our Polish student Miss Suszko. The children loved this experience and we plan to read this to our morning children next week.

Today at our Achievement assembly Kerr got a special certificate for being a reflective learner as he was excellent this week at talking about how we are Active in Nursery which is one of our GIRFEC indicators. Well done Kerr. We will be continuing to discuss each of the indicators in the GiRFEC wheel with the children and make a children’s display of this. We will post pictures of these as we complete them. We have also been recording the childrens’ views in our Talking Book.

Next week is Technology week across the school and Nursery and we are planning on working with Primary 1 classes on apps that can be used on the iPads as well as building some exciting things!

Our Breakfast Blether is on Tuesday 9th February at 845 all parents and carers are welcome to come along for an informal chat with some of the Nursery Team. If you are free to come along please add your name to the sign up sheet in the Nursery. Thank you to everyone who has put their name down so far.  Remember breakfast is included! We look forward to seeing as many as possible at this event.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

The Nursery Team.

We’re going on a ………hunt!

Wow I can’t believe it’s Friday again, what a busy week we’ve had in P1R!

In reading this week we have been focusing on revising all the sounds we have learned and blending sounds together to make CVC words. We have used a variety of approaches and resources to do this, Miss Smyth even paid us a visit and spent the morning observing us as we worked. She was very impressed at how well the children used the apps on the ipad and their classroom displays as a tool for learning.

Maths has been great fun as we continued to learn about shapes, this week we looked at 3D shapes and spent lots of time exploring the shapes using our sense of touch and sight. We played games on the smartboard, went on a shape hunt, played shape bingo and dominoes and even wrote detailed descriptions for each of the shapes in our writing lesson.

In IDL we looked at how pirates defended themselves when at sea and how they used different weapons in battles. Everyone chose a weapon they would like to make using junk or recycled materials. We have put these on display for everyone to look at, hopefully we won’t have to use them too often!! On Wednesday we went outdoors for learning on a pirate scavenger hunt, we had to listen carefully to the clues and then go and look for evidence of pirates in our school grounds. We worked in two teams and chose names and captains for our crew – The Jolly Rodger and The Squeaky Sail. It was lovely to see everyone working together and helping one another in their search. The fun continued on Thursday when Mr Hunter asked us to create our very own sea monsters which were often a feature in pirate stories. We again took the learning outdoors for this and the children created fantastic monsters! Harry loved making the weapons and pirate play, Matthew enjoyed making weapons and Angelina liked finding pirate things in the school garden.

For Catholic Education Week we spent time discussing how we could show mercy to others, the children enjoyed watching the Pope Francis animation and all produced their very own Hands of Mercy for a whole school display.

IMG_3529

Finally we finished off the week with an Achievements Assembly and our committees. Oma was awarded a special certificate for being a reflective learner – well done Oma! When asked how she felt she said, ” I felt really good.”

Well as I said at the beginning of the entry, it’s been a busy week! We’re all looking forward to next week when we have Technologies Week as our focus and Lent begins.

P2M Weekly News

Another busy and exciting week in P2M.

Our week started off as usual with our spelling lesson on Monday morning. This week we were focusing on the ‘y’ sound e.g. my, cry, reply. Mrs Purdie came to see our spelling this week and she was very impressed with how good we are with this, we loved showing off our skills to her.

Our number lesson this focused on partitioning (breaking up numbers). We done this through the use of hundred blocks, tens sticks and units cubes. It was quite a tricky task but with lots of practise we soon got to grips with this and were ‘building’ numbers using this resource in no time! We even played an online game to further our knowledge with this – look out for this game in the homework next week!

WP_20160201_13_35_26_Pro WP_20160201_13_26_12_Pro WP_20160201_13_20_19_Pro

We have done lots of practise with our learn-its this week. Have you been using your new individualised learn-its for practising at home? In class we completed a matching task with some learn-its which are quite tricky, we were working to match these up as quick as a ‘CLIC’.

WP_20160202_09_58_16_Pro

We have come to the end of our addition and subtraction topic and this week we have been working on problem solving. Miss Meechan would read us a problem and then we had to decide if it would be an addition or subtraction problem before solving it. This was quite tricky but very satisfying when we found the correct answer. We also played a new board game called ‘bus stop’. Why don’t you ask your child about this game.

WP_20160202_10_19_56_Pro

This week was Catholic Education Week and this year was focusing on ‘learning to be merciful’. Ask your child what ‘being merciful’ means?  We took this theme and focused on 2 parables – the lost sheep and the prodigal son. Firstly we listened to the parable of the lost sheep and then Miss Meechan told us that there were some lost sheep in our classroom and it was our task to be good shepherds and find them. We then created our own ‘lost sheep’ and made this into a new display in our classroom.

WP_20160202_13_17_31_Pro WP_20160202_13_22_15_Pro

Next week is ‘technologies week’ at St. Ninians. However, we decided to start this theme early. As part of our Katie Morag topic we wanted to learn about transport to and from the island – boats in particular. We looked at a range of images of different types of boats – fishing boats, rowing boats, cruise ships and even catamarans. We then used a range of recycled materials and created our own boat as part of a group. We had to think about what materials would help the boat float and what materials might sink. Floating was very important because we would be taking our boats to the pond to test them out!

We love working as a team and we are very competitive in P2M so we decided to turn this into a competition… a boat race! As you can see from the pictures Miss Meechan and Mr McCurdy took this challenge very seriously… and won the competition!

Our writing lesson this week was all about writing instructions. To do this we made crispy cakes. After we made the cakes we had to think about the different steps that were involved from washing your hands all the way to letting the cakes cool down before eating. We had some extra cakes left over so we shared these out with Mrs Purdie and some other teachers who thought they were delicious too!

Finally this week we welcomed Miss McCormack into our classroom and we are pleased that she is going to be working with us for 6 weeks! We look forward to sharing our learning with you Miss McCormack.

Primary 6/7 Weekly News

Due to the bad weather conditions at the start of the week, many of our Primary 6s were disappointed to discover that the skiing/snowboarding trip had to be postponed. However in true St. Ninian’s style they soon bounced back as we all took part in a mini-topic about having a Growth Mindset. We learnt many things including how to change a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset. We took part in drama activities, played games, designed posters and created Power points. We also took part in a quiz at the start of the topic and then again at the end of the topic and discovered that nearly everyone had a Growth Mindset by the end of the week! What a fantastic result!

Growth Mindset 001 Growth Mindset 002 Growth Mindset 003

Aside from the topic work we have continued to thoroughly enjoy participating in gymnastics for P.E. and have all improved our skills using the apparatus.  Today we attended our different committees and we are all looking forward to next week which will focus on Technologies and will involve some very different activities for us all to get involved with.

Have a great weekend!
