P1M Weekly News

We have had another fantastic week in P1M. Everyone has been working so hard and Miss Meechan is so impressed with how well we have all settled in and how much everyone is engaging in their new learning experiences.

We started off our week with our first phonics lesson. During phonics lessons we learn new sounds. This week our sounds were ‘m’ and ‘c’. The ‘m’ sound is made from our lips, this is why it is a red sound. We put jam on our lips and made the ‘m’ sound, rubbing our lips together to taste the jam. This was a very fun activity and we enjoyed participating in this. We then took part in a range of different activities to help us learn these new sounds. We have been listening to, singing along and doing the actions for these ‘m’ and ‘c’ songs to help us remember them. Why don’t you try this out at home?

In numeracy we are continuing to learn all about numbers to 10. We having working on our formation of the numbers as well as counting out objects (dinosaurs!) to represent this number. We have even been making numbers with play-dough and showing the amount of fingers to represent this value. We have also been doing a lot of counting aloud. This is one of our favourite songs at the moment!

Full timers in P1R

As the title says, P1R were in full days this week and lasted well, the children had bags of enthusiasm and energy for learning across the week. They enjoyed having lunch in the hall with the other classes.

Our phonics focus was ‘m’ and ‘c’ and the children learned about where in their mouth the sounds came from and how to form the letters correctly. They went on a sounds walk around the school looking for objects beginning with ‘m’ and ‘c’ taking it in turns to photograph what they found. Ask your child what colour the sounds are and I’m sure they’ll be able to tell you. They also enjoyed the carousel activities where they were able to use the smartboard and ipads, playdough, strawberry jam and lots more!

In maths we continued to practise our counting through games and songs. What great movers we have in P1R! We also used our book study topic in maths and spoke about the size of dinosaurs using mathematical language – tall, short, long, big, small. We had a great idea to then measure our dinosaur drawings from a previous lesson using cubes, I thought this was a good suggestion! We have put our findings on our classroom displays for you to have a look at.

In IDL we also went on a tour of the school as we have some children who went to different nurseries and were keen to have a look around. Mrs Purdie let us all go into her office, it was a bit of a squeeze but we managed to all fit in. Thanks Mrs Purdie! We also made our very own school ties.

The children designed some really nice book covers for Harry and the Dinosaurs and they learned about some of the important features of books – when you’re reading at home see if you can find some of these features.

We wrote our very first stories about our favourite things in big school with a little bit of help from the grown ups, it was great to see all of the children having a go at emergent writing.

PE and the Daily mile was good fun, we only managed half a mile this week but some of us chose to include this in our goal for the term. We played lots of teambuilding games and got used to the big hall. Well done to everyone for remembering their gym kit.

We finished the week with a whole school assembly and then set our personal goals for the term. Come along to Ninian’s Natter and discuss this goal with your child.

We’re all looking forward to next week!

Our Jungle adventure in Primary 2!

This week we have been revising how to order and sequence numbers to 20.

After showing our understanding we have moved on to ordering numbers to 30 and 50. We will continue to focus on this.

We have been learning about numbers in the environment and we went on a little walk to find different numbers.

Here we are taking photos of the numbers we found with the ipads.

In writing we have been learning all about adjectives.

We thought of a wide range of describing words to describe the animals in the book “Rumble in the Jungle”.

Miss Boyes was impressed by all of the describing words we included in our writing.

In topic we have been exploring the different patterns for the animals in the jungle. We then matched the pictures of the patterns to the pictures of the animals and drew our own animal pattern.

In RE we have been learning about the story of Noah’s Ark. We have shown our understanding of the story by retelling it to Miss Boyes and  then sequencing it.

We really enjoyed our structured play which was jungle themed. We took part in different activities which we thought was very fun. Next week we will have the opportunity to try another activity at a different station. We will evaluate our learning experience at the activities stations.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

A Great Week in P2/3!

What a great week we’ve had in Primary 2/3!

Our literacy carousels have been a great success, with the children working on spelling, reading and handwriting activities.

Drama was a huge hit, when we played ‘Hot Seating’ and took it in turns to ask questions of George, from our novel George’s Marvellous Medicine.  We explored healthy living when we thought about medicines and how we feel when we are ill.

We tried yoga on Thursday to help make our concentration even better and we all had great fun.

One of our favourite activities this week was our  Go Noodle PE session where we improved some of our dance moves!

On Thursday we said goodbye to Father Paul with a surprise assembly and we all contributed to a special book which the school made for him.

We’re all looking forward to another exciting week next week in Primary 2/3.

P7-6

Here are some of the highlights from our week.

Art – we investigated water colour mixing to create effective medieval landscape pictures.  We were very pleased with our results.

Maths – P7 were working with negative numbers and were making links to real life skills by reading a thermometer scale with negative values.  The Oil Rig dice game was a big hit!  You could even make your own simple version at home and teach your parents the rules…who can reach the platform first!

IMG_1037[1]

P6 continued to work with large numbers and again linked this to real life skills by learning how to fill out a bank cheque, I wish I had been receiving some of the cheques which had values into hundreds of  pounds!

IMG_1038[1]

The whole class have learned how to play the game Shut The Box, which focuses on recalling basic number bonds as well as playing smart (turn over the large numbers early on!).  Again this is a game you can make at home by either making your own number cards 1 – 9 or using these values from a pack of cards and two dice.  If anyone makes the game and teaches their parents let me know how you got on by posting a blog.

Literacy – we have continued using our class novel to base our literacy work on and completed our first tasks map.  We started our first piece of writing on Thursday about memories, and we are looking through an elderly mans eyes into his life and past experiences and we are going to be completing an imagined response to this man’s memories when he looks through a squint.  Make sure you log on next week to read snippets of the children’s work.

PE – This was a huge success this week with nearly all children remembering to bring appropriate equipment for their outdoor learning.  Both the rugby and hockey groups were very pleased with their chosen sport.

Just as a reminder, reading books were given out this week.  I do ask that these are brought into school every day as we complete follow up work based on the novels which can span over a few days.

To finish off we would like to mention Fr Paul.  He came into our school this week and we surprised him with an assembly and a P7 afternoon tea.  He was genuinely delighted and touched and I’m sure his eyes looked a little watery at one point!  Thank you Fr Paul.

Have a great weekend

Mrs Currie

P6 are Epic Everyday!

P6 are Epic Everyday!

This week we have been learning place value up to millions!  We were writing really big numbers in words and digits.  We used our whiteboards to help us write our numbers by partitioning them into millions, hundreds of thousand, tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and units. We also listened to a song to try and help us remember.

During our smart starts we have been working on our times tables and addition.  We were completing activities against the clock and we are all getting faster! We discussed the strategies we use when completing calculations to help each other and give each other new ideas. We will continue to work on this in the coming weeks, if you would like to practise the speed challenge at home here is the link:

We have been reading more of our class novel Skellig which is getting very interesting.  We all wrote a diary entry as Michael, showing our understanding of his feelings and then worked on some role play activities showing off our acting skills! In art we all used chalk and charcoal to create feathers to make wings for our display!  We all drew a portrait of how we imagine Skellig to look based on evidence from the book.

This week we said good bye to Father Paul, we had a special surprise assembly and we all made poems to add to his book.  We will all miss Father Paul and wish him good luck in his future.

The Dream Team – Primary 4

Our first full week in P4 has been filled with fun. One of our favourite highlights was making our very own dream catchers! This proved to be very tricky but we thoroughly enjoyed it!

The BFG is getting very exciting! Sophie almost got eaten by the Blood Bottler and The BFG has been teaching her all about frobscottle and whizzpoppers! This caused lots of hilarity in our classroom.

We wrote imaginary stories in writing this week all about our dreams. We had dreams about all sorts of exciting things! Here are a few of them:

Adrin dreamt about Zombies, Evie dreamt about a unicorn, Mark dreamt about a haunted mansion and Shannon dreamt about becoming a gymnast.

In maths, we have been looking at rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand and learning all about fact families. We made posters to teach the younger children the rules of rounding and enjoyed recording one another answering rounding questions on the ipads. We could teach you a thing or two about numbers using our fact family skills!

Have a great weekend, The Dream Team :)!

Nursery News

What a quiet and peaceful week we have had in nursery! It has been so lovely to welcome back our older children  who have enjoyed exploring their surroundings and getting used to the rules and routines again. 🙂

Our first task this week was to learn how to keep the nursery tidy and organised. We used our tidy up cards which show us what each area of the nursery should look like when it is tidy. The children have been absolutely fantastic with this new approach and all the visitors to the nursery have commented on how organised and responsible the children are. Well done boys and girls!

Our next job is to get everybody involved in using our visual planning wall. This wall will showcase the learning experiences that are taking place in the nursery and will reflect everyone’s ideas and suggestions. We especially welcome ideas and suggestions from our parents and carers. Please let us know if you would like to contribute to our planning wall and we will help you get started!

Next week we will begin to welcome our new nursery pupils into our Saint Ninian’s family. We are very much looking forward to meeting our new friends and we are excited to show them all that nursery has to offer!

Unfortunately we were so busy with all our activities this week that we forgot to take any photographs!! Oops! We promise we will take lots of photos next week!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The nursery team 🙂
