Taking off in Primary 2!

This week in Numeracy we have been learning how to find the missing number in addition sums. We have taken time to discuss the strategies we have used to find our answers.

Something add 2 equals 10.

Abdullah-“We start at the 10 and jump back 2 places on the number line. The answer is 8.”

Leo- “If the missing number is in the middle of the sum we start with the number at the beginning and jump up to the total number.”

Zoe- “2 add something equals 10. Start at the 2 and jump up til you get to the number 10. The answer should be 8.”

The game we have had for homework this week is a great game to learn how to complete missing number sums.
We have also been using it in class.

We have begun brushing our teeth in class. We brush our teeth once a day. To show our understanding of how important it is to brush our teeth we made posters in writing. We had to use appropriate language for our posters so as part of our smart start we recorded words which we associate with brushing teeth.

We think everyone will make sure they brush their teeth after seeing our posters. Here are two examples below.

In topic we have been learning about the force of air on an object. We created our own rockets and we used a rocket launcher to launch them into the sky. The air from the pump pushed against the rocket to lift them off. We loved going outside to launch our rockets.

img_4883 img_4896img_4889

We asked to learn about the speed of cars. So we decided to test how fast a toy car would go on different materials down a ramp. We took to push the car down the ramp. We also took turns to use the Ipad to record it and to time the speed.

img_4756 img_4758

To learn about Road Safety we went for a walk outdoors to observe the traffic that passed by. We discussed the different types of traffic we saw, how to be aware of oncoming cars and we also counted the traffic.
img_4797

In PE for a warm up we practised our hula hooping skills. We loved using the Hula hoops.
Poppy ”I can spin the hoop really fast.”
Maja “I can spin the hoop for a long time.”

Nursery News

We can’t believe that’s the first term finished in Nursery. All our new children have settled really well into our Nursery routines with our older children helping them so much. We look forward to welcoming some more new starts after the October break. This week it’s the turn of the PM children to share their learning.

Mark ” I like to play the doggy game.”

Emilie M ” I like to use the spying glass to see the leaves”

Emalie B ” I like to see the leaves falling down”

Jiya” I like making things with the magnets”

Robert” In Autumn leaves fall down”

Luke ” I like playing at the play dough table”

An update from the AM children. They went on their Autumn walk this week and identified lots of signs that Autumn had arrived. Our planning wall has taken on Autumn too with some photographs and ideas of what the children have been doing and what they would like to learn. If your child mentions anything that they would like to learn about Autumn please add this to our planning wall. It’s great to see the children taking ownership of their learning.

Just a little reminder that our Stay and Play sessions take place the week beginning 25th October and Come back and Play week beginning 31st October. There are sign up sheets available in the Nursery. This gives you the opportunity to see and experience the Nursery activities with your child.

If you are having problems logging onto your child’s online Learning Journals please email our deputy head Miss Smyth on Wlfiona.smyth@glow.sch.uk

We will also be having the Nursery Halloween parties on Monday 31st October. More details to follow but could we please ask that no masks be worn to these as some children get frightened by this. Thank you for your support with this.

We hope you all have a lovely holiday and we look forward to welcoming the children back to Nursery on Tuesday 25th October.

The Nursery Team.😊

P7/6 End Of Term 1

It has been such a quick first term and we have achieved so much.

Thank you to everyone for preparing and delivering their presentations on a chosen country this week.  Everyone has received feedback on their presentations.  Next term there will be another opportunity to build upon these skills and act on the feedback you were given.

In Maths we have rounded up our work on BODMAS and division by six.  The P7 children really enjoyed the BODMAS song.  Click the link below to hear it.

Our glass maths wall showcases our learning well.  Well done to those who completed the challenge question!

Primary 2/3 Weekly News

It has been another amazing week in Primary 2/3 and we would like to share some of our highlights.

Matthew – A highlight was learning about the layers inside the earth and what happens when a volcano erupts.  I liked looking at diagrams of the mantle of the earth.

Maeve – I liked when we made a volcano then watched it erupt.

Hasan – I liked working on the Tig Tag website and watching the film clip which showed us what’s inside the earth.

Alishba – I liked adding to 20 and working in my maths workbook.

Maya – I liked art when we made pictures of spacemen with Mrs Thomson.

Annayah – I liked using our Spanish weather phrases to make weather wheels.

Carly – I liked writing about our science experiment.

Harry and Dominic – I liked playing dodgeball in PE with Mr McCurdy.

Pawel – I liked going to the library and borrowing books for our class.

We were all very proud of Alishba when she got a certificate in our achievement assembly this morning for working so hard in Primary 2/3.  All the children from Glasserton and Calder had a fantastic time at the movie morning on Friday!

Hooray for the holiday!

Another busy week in P4 this week!

We had another brown envelope delivered and were set two tasks in our mission.  We had to research information about 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers to create a fact file and now have to build cabins to suit! We can’t wait to get started after the holiday!

We wrote diary entries this week in our writing lesson. We had to pretend we were a passenger boarding The Titanic for her maiden voyage. We learned about the key features of a diary entry and what should be included. Why not quiz us on it? We have also been learning about homophones. Ask us what a homophone is to see if we can remember.

jan-writing

We have been learning how to add 2 and 3 digit numbers with carrying in numeracy! This has proved to be very tricky! We must remember to think about place value when carrying.

img_1023

We have enjoyed learning about the life of Pope Francis and the work that he does. Did you know he only has one functioning lung? Some of us decided we would like to record our learning in our class talking book.

Have a great holiday and stay safe :)!

Little rays of sunshine

The sun has been shining outside and P1R have been little rays of sunshine in class this week!

Our buddies came to visit on Tuesday morning to do some paired reading with us, we were all really excited to see them. They read to us using the library books we had chosen last week. We can’t wait to see them again next week.

img_3455

We didn’t learn any new sounds this week, instead we spent time practising all the ones we have learned already – m,c,p,s,t,n,a,i,ck,k. We are really good at recognising them in colour or when they are all black. It was fun trying to make words using 3 sounds at a time. We’ve learned that if we say them slowly to begin with, then faster, it helps us say the words, eg. m-a-t says mat, t-i-n says tin. Mrs Roy has asked us to keep practising this at school and at home, it’s called oral blending. We enjoyed using playdough to make the shapes of the letters during our carousel.

img_346620161003_093903

In maths we had our final week of learning about numbers to 10 making sure we are all confident in counting, writing the numbers and ordering the numbers. We had some new activities at carousels this week, some of our favourites were lollipop ordering and threading beads. Ask us at home about what we did.

We took advantage of the lovely weather this week and took Trex for a walk. The children decided to go to Dedridge Primary School as this was somewhere we had talked about in class. On our walk we stopped at various points when we saw something of interest – Bernice spotted the local shop, Lloyd spotted the Chinese Take-Away, Paul M spotted Dedridge Primary School, Paul L spotted the big bridge. We also chatted about the importance of using the underpass as the road is very busy in Dedridge. Everyone was very well behaved and passers by commented on this, I was a very proud teacher!! When we returned to class we made a lovely collage of all the places we saw, it’s on display in our P1 area, remember to have a look when you’re next in school. We also wrote super stories about walk and Dawid and Rafay were our star writers – well done boys!

img_3477

Our wellbeing is very important to us and we are trying to create a wellbeing culture in our classroom. Every morning we check in with Mrs Roy and Mrs Stewart and discuss how we are feeling before recording this on our wellbeing chart. We have also enjoyed circle time and circle games allowing us to work together and share our thoughts. In October our GIRFEC focus is Healthy so we are taking time to discuss this and make sure we are looking after ourselves at school. We are now brushing our teeth daily at school and have all been given lovely new toothbrushes. As well as this we have our 2 slots in the gym hall for physical activities and take part in the daily mile.

We ended the week with a learning conversation with Mrs Purdie, James, Lucy and Ephraim chose to go along to Mrs Purdie’s office with our talking book to discuss their learning. They enjoyed this and especially liked meeting with the nursery children to look at their floorbook too!

Have a great weekend!

A surprise for P1M

This week we have been really busy completing all of the tasks that Trex asked us to do. We took a walk around the school grounds to look for the different things in our local area. We saw shops, another school (Dedridge Primary), the park, the Lanthorn and we recognised the path that would take us to the pond. After our walk we had a look at all of these different landmarks on google earth – this was lots of fun! We then made our own maps for Trex. We gave each different route we created a number to help Trex find his way around our local area.

We had a fantastic afternoon at the park on Thursday. The children wanted to bring in their own teddies to meet Trex so we decided to take our teddies and Trex to the park together. When we were at the park we all played so well together. We shared the apparatus and took turns too. We also spoke about ‘stranger danger’ and we know that we should only speak to adults that we know.

Thank you to all who sent in photographs of your houses and your address. We had so much fun looking at our houses on google earth. We then used the photographs of our houses to paint our own representation of these. Our painting skills are constantly improving. This week we were working on using the correct amount of paint on our brush and ensuring we cleaned our paint brush properly so the colours didn’t mix together if we didn’t want them to.

collage-2016-10-06-21_52_05

Last week, we went to the library and took out some books which we would like to read in class. We have enjoyed reading our own books in class this week and sharing our books with our friends too. Ask your child what book they took out from the library?

collage-2016-10-05-21_12_28

Do you remember about our letter from Trex last week? Trex told us that his baby brother was going to join our class. Well… you will never guess what has happened this week! A nest with an egg in it has appeared in our classroom. When we came into our classroom Trex was watching over the nest so we think it must be his baby brother that is inside the egg. We are so excited about the egg hatching, we keep checking on the egg throughout the day to check it is safe. This week in our writing lesson we wrote stories about what we think Trex’s baby brother might look like. Our writing is fantastic and well done to Adam our star writer this week!

20161006_081231

Our numeracy skills are constantly improving and this week we participated in some fun activities to improve our numeracy skills. We are becoming much quicker at recognising random dot patterns and we loved using sand trays to work on our number formation too. We played the caterpillar ordering game on the smartboard. Search for this on your device at home too to play this game. We are continuing to work on our ordering of numbers, we used numicon and lollipop sticks to order our numbers this week. Can you believe that we are also learning about addition too! We are clever clogs in primary 1!

collage-2016-10-06-21_51_33

A big well done to Kerr who joined Mrs Purdie for ‘hot chocolate with the head’ today. Kerr always works hard and is a good friend to everyone in our class. A well deserved treat for you, Kerr.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Meechan

P7/6 are storming learners!

This week as part of our topic we have been learning about weather systems, and in particular hurricane Matthew.  We have worked hard with Miss Ross and learned about how weather systems such as tornadoes and hurricanes form.  We produced our own tornado in a bottle which was great fun (and very wet!).img_05311

We have also had the opportunity to discuss and create our own survival kits and an evacuation plan, which we know people in Florida are having to do right now.

In Maths we have combined our knowledge of working out the area of a right angle triangle and a rectangle and applied this to find the area of a composite shape.  Some of us worked with Mrs Miller and produced metre squares.  Using these we made large shapes/patterns.  To complete this exercise we had to use team work and measuring skills as well as understand about area.  It was great to see the size of a metre square as it helps us visualise real life area.

img_11171

In writing we began redrafting our letters to President Obama and we hope to post these away before the October holiday.  We have practised the skill of proof reading and editing to help us with the redrafting process.

We are always looking to make links in our learning and activities and even at Golden Time Sophia couldn’t help herself as she tried to recreate the Statue of Liberty!  img_05401

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Currie

Primary 4 weekly update!

We have had an amazing week learning about The Titanic. We have learned some fascinating facts and enjoyed using the internet to do some research about the passengers, dates and survivors. Our very own ‘Queen of the Ocean’ is now complete! What do you think?

We followed in the footsteps of Shoo Rayner and created Titanic sketches using pencil to sketch and shade.

In numeracy we have been learning about estimating and rounding. We know that estimating is when you make a sensible guess by rounding numbers to the nearest ten.

In writing this week, we made annotated diagrams of The Titanic. We were able to label all the different parts of the ship including the Marconi room, engine and boiler room and The Grand Staircase.

Thank you for reading our weekly update!

We hope you have a great weekend,

The Dream Team!

Awesome Primary 3

Another fabulous week in Awesome Primary 3.  We have been so busy this week and have been learning lots of different things.

This week we learned all about Forces.

Katie learned that a Force moves something.  Emily added that it can twist something.  Ola and Sophie YM also remembered that it can push or pull something to move it too.  At the Funfair, forces make the rides operate and move.

I was very delighted to see everyone so eager to learn all about the scientific workings of the Funfair.  Totally awesome!

This week in Maths we have been extending our knowledge of Place Value.  A big thumbs up from everyone to show that they understand this much better now.

img_0344

On Monday I will stick the Sumdog passwords into the diaries and the children can explore this at home.  It’s a fabulous website to help extend understanding of the maths topics.

Art

In Art this week the children were creating pictures of Funfair Tents using paints.

Jack really enjoyed this activity and learned to use the paint brush with better control.  Sophie R liked using the lovely bright colours.

This week in writing we created our own job adverts to advertise jobs for the Funfair.  Cameron really liked learning about the different jobs.

Have a wonderful weekend from Awesome Primary 3 and Mrs McMullen.  Looking forward to next week 🙂
