Nursery News

Firstly, we would like to thank everyone for their kind donations last week for Children in Need. We raised £57 which is an amazing total!! Thank you 🙂

This week the children we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Scottish SPCA, Scotland’s Animal Welfare Charity. We learned all about the different types of animals who live in Scotland and also what to do if we come across an injured animal. All the children were very focused and listened extremely well to our visitors!! Well done boys and girls you were fantastic!!!

We have set up an exciting new heuristic area in our Nursery, this will help develop the children’s natural curiosity, strengthen their cognitive development and help improve their hand eye coordination. We have named this area the “Treasure Table.” We are very excited for the children to start using this resource on Monday. If you would like more information on heuristic play please speak to a member of our Nursery team.

HIP club

HIP club has been running for 2 weeks now and it has been great to see so many children coming along to spend some time working on their homework tasks. Charlie and Aiden made some posters to display around the school to encourage children to come along. This is a drop-in club which runs every Tuesday lunchtime for anyone who needs some extra time or support with their tasks. Here are some photographs of our club…

Extraordinary Earth learning in P4!

This week in Primary 4 we have been learning all about Planet Earth. We began the week in a sticky mess as we made papier Mache Planet Earths.

Preston – Firstly we blew up a balloon and then we covered the balloon with PVA/water mix and newspapers. It was a great opportunity and great fun!

Chloe – It was very fun. I enjoyed painting the Planet Earths the best.

Isla – It was Mache-tacular.

We have been exploring living, non living and never lived things.

Thomas – I know that a knife and fork has never lived because it is made from metal.

Beth – I know books are non-living now because they are made from trees but the tree has been chopped down and no longer lives.

Taylor – I know that a tree is a living thing because it grows and it needs water.

For writing this week we wrote a special letter to John Lewis to tell him what we thought about the advert “The Man on the Moon!” Lewis – I thought the advert was good because it was very emotional. Have a look at the advert for yourself! Here is the link;

This week we had a special visit from SPCA. We learned that SPCA stands for Scottish Prevention Cruelty for Animals. Siobhan told us how we can keep animals safe. She shared some of her stories about rescuing animals. She brought some of the equipment that she uses to rescue animals. We had great fun using the equipment and trying some of it on. Here are some pictures. (more to follow)

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend to rest and be prepared for lots of hard work next week.

Primary 5/6 News

In maths we learned another multiplication strategy, how to times by 10,100 and 1000. In Science, we worked in teams to make table signs by researching facts about our chosen planet, in the solar system. In literacy we learned how to recognise and use proper nouns and comparative adjectives. The boys from P5/6 are very pleased because they won the football game, 4-3 against Dedridge, on Tuesday. Yesterday we had a very busy day as our class went to our class mass in the Lanthorn Parish. Also the SSPCA came for a visit and we learned about pet patrol.

Keeping Up With Current Global Issues In P7

During Anti-Bullying week we have been using our drama skills to write a script about bullying and act this out. Children have also been learning about different types of bullying and making decisions about what to do in a bullying scenario. In P7 we are very lucky that we get on with each other very well and bullying is not a problem although we are very aware of what to do if it did become an issue for anyone.

On Tuesday we visited St. Margaret’s Academy where we got to do lots of social studies related activities about children in WW2 Germany. We learned about the Hitler Youth and the Persecution of the Jews and we are excited to go up again next week to learn some more!

In our topic, Sport Science, we have been learning about the main organs in the human body. We worked in groups and drew round someone and then painted on the main organs in the correct places. It was really fun!

In maths we have been focusing on money and learning about bills, receipts, comparing items to select the best value for money and debit cards. Parents beware – your children are all desperate for a bank card!!

Finally, this week in P7 we have started to watch CBBC Newsround every morning. The children were very upset by what happened in Paris so instead of having a one day discussion and moving on from there we have decided to keep up to date with the news every day by watching a 3-5 minute clip of today’s headlines. This has been really effective in getting the children to talk about the world and current global issues and each day we have taken a few moments to think about others in our world and really appreciate what we have.

Have a great weekend!

Stellar Awards 2015 Winner

We are delighted to share that St Ninian’s and Dedridge Primary won the award for Team of the Year – Sport at this year’s West Lothian Council Stellar Awards.

The award recognises the school’s commitment to sport,  our sporting achievements and the hard work of our Sport Scotland Committee in supporting Mr McCurdy to enhance our after school sport provision.

This is a great achievement for the both schools and the local community. Well done to everyone involved.

Arctic breeze in P2B

Our new topic has been unveiled and it is “The North Pole”. We are super excited to learn all about it. We had a whole class discussion and thought about what we already know about the Arctic/North Pole and what we want to learn. We put all of our ideas on a big poster.

This week we began our writing lesson by watching a video clip which showed the Inuit people building igloos. We had to listen to all of the information given in the documentary and then we used it to write our own instructions. We now know that when writing instructions you give each step a number and you give the instructions a title. We will try to use our instructions to build an igloo in our story corner.

Miss Boyes: 3 boys in class showed a real interest in writing instructions of how to build an igloo. Their enthusiasm of the topic also showed during golden time. Calvin asked me “Can you come and take a photo of our Jenga igloo Miss Boyes?” I was more than happy to as I thought this was fantastic. Jakub, Calvin and Seamus had worked together on the construction and they were able to link this straight back to their writing lesson from Wednesday. I asked them how they built their igloo and they informed me that

” you pretend that the jenga blocks are ice.” Calvin.
“You start at the bottom and build them in a spiral.” Seamus.
The boys were extremely proud and so they should be too!! I hope they have a nice surprise to see that their jenga igloo has made it onto the blog!

In numeracy  we have been continuing with our subtraction sums. Miss Boyes is super impressed by how confident we are becoming with completing these calculations.

We are now using our number lines more independently and we can subtract single digit numbers from teen digits.  We have been working together in groups on different activities around the classroom. We really love the dice game because Miss Boyes lets us write our sums on the big board like we are the teacher.IMG_1664
To check our learning from the lesson we use our special spinning wheel. It is really important that we go over what we have learnt at the end of a lesson and we think this is super fun. Sometimes Paulo the parrot joins in too as he likes to make sure we have been listening to Miss Boyes.

Here we are showing off what we have learnt.

Keep posted to find out more about the clever clogs in P2B.

Nursery News

This week in Nursery we have been learning about Diwali the festival of light. Our AM children made flower necklaces and our PM children made lanterns all associated with this festival. We also continued with People who help us which was responsive planning from the children after we had discussed fireworks and fire safety. On Thursday we had a special visitor linked to this topic PC Welsh very kindly came in to see us on his day off and spoke to both sessions about Stranger Danger and Road Safety. All the children listened very well and answered lots of questions. They also got the opportunity to try on a policeman’s safety vest which we discovered was very heavy. Watch this space for more visitors whose jobs are about helping people!

Also on Thursday our AM children took part in a minute silence for Remembrance Day and they were all very respectful and thoughtful.

Children in Need was celebrated by both sessions by wearing their pyjamas to Nursery with crazy hair. The children seemed to enjoy wearing their pyjamas as did the staff!  Thank you all very much for your support and donations for this.

Just a little reminder that Nursery photographs are on Tuesday 17th November. A list of upcoming dates for Nursery was available this week in paper form. If you didn’t receive one please speak to any member of the Nursery team and they will be happy to get one for you.

Thank you to the parents/carers who came along to our Parents evenings. It was lovely to get the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and all the learning that is taking place in Nursery.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend. Stay safe out of the horrible weather.

Primary 5/6 News

In P 5/6 this week, we all enjoyed dressing down to raise money for ‘Children in Need’ today. In maths we have all learned how to use rounding to multiply two digits by 1 digit numbers. Kaden taught the class how to round and multiply because he felt very confident. This helped some of us in the class as we watched the video of Kaden. In reading we learned about to, too and two through a rap and making up our own raps. In our Science topic, we have learned about the scale of the solar system and next week we are going to make our own solar system in the playground. Our table teams now have planet names and we are in the middle of designing posters for our tables.

Primary 5/6 News

Last week, in p5\6, we rehearsed for our assembly. We learned the historical meaning behind firework night. We shared our learning with p4-7, telling them the story about guy fox. We also learned the firework code and created posters to put up around the school. In art, last week, we made fireworks out of different types of pasta, we designed our firework and then added glitter to make our firework’s colourful. In music we started to learn how to play the Ukulele. As part of our science topic we investigated how the explosion in a firework happens. We made rockets out of plastic bottles and used bicarbonate soda and vinegar. Our experiment did not go to plan; we think this happened because all the air went out the bottle we needed to tighten them. We are going to try again next week.
