Awesome P3 – Masterchef!!!

FOOD AND FARMING

As part of our Food and Farming topic, the children have decided they would like to experiment with some cooking and trying some healthy creations.  Yesterday we made a vegetarian rice dish, which is a traditional recipe from Honduras.  Most of the class thought they would not like it, as we put in mushrooms, but I was so pleasantly surprised to see everyone being so open minded to trying new things and having a taste.

Maliha – I really liked chopping the vegetables and being very sensible when using the knife.

Kate – I really enjoyed learning something new, I know now not to touch my face if I have been touching raw onions.

Cameron – I was surprised that I liked peppers because I never used to like them.

Ethan – I was surprised that I liked raw onions as I had never tried them before.

Sophie YM – I liked trying the vegetables because I never liked mushrooms but now I really like them with rice.

Niamh – I was a little too scared to chop the vegetables but I think I will have a go next time.

Emily – I liked watching the rice cook and the bubbles because it looked nice.

Bartosz – I liked eating the rice with the Soya Sauce becuase it was so good.

Orla – I liked the cooking because it was hard work but it was really fun and at the end it was delicious.

Richard – I liked cutting the vegetables because I had to be really careful and concentrate.

Teegan – I liked cutting the onion because it was fun using the bridge hold.

Emma – I liked trying different vegetables with the rice.

Ola – I really enjoyed pouring the water because it made a big sizzling noise and it was interesting.

The children will have the recipes home next week so have a try and hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as we did.  I was very impressed with their chopping skills so I’m sure they’d love to help with some cooking at home. 🙂

Have a lovely long weekend, Awesome P3 & Mrs McMullen 🙂

Symmetry has been a big focus for us in maths this week.  This is one of our favourite websites to improve our skills https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-sorting

We’ve also been working hard on our Spanish conversation skills. Our phrase of the week has been ¿Cómo estás?  Try and ask us this question and find out how we are feeling!

We hope that you all have a lovely long weekend.

Our weekly news

What a great week we’ve had in P1R this week, where shall we begin…

In literacy we have now learned all our P1 Sounds so have been focusing on revising the ones we found tricky, eg. Digraphs and oa/oi. Some of us even learned about alternative spellings of the vowel sound ai/ay. We played games in pairs, used letter join on the iPads, did some cut and stick word tasks, did a team task in our Talking Book and practised spelling in our journals. Lucy and Isla wanted to share this funny video with everyone:

In reading we are all progressing well and are quickly getting through different books. We enjoy our paired reading on a Tuesday with P7 and Mrs Docherty is now joining us for reading too which has been lovely!

Maths has been good fun as we continued to learn about time using little clocks, matching digital to analogue times, Stop the Clock (Dexter was our champion) on the smartboard and time bingo. We are all reminding Mrs Roy about lunchtime-12 o’clock and hometime-3 o’clock! You can download the Stop the Clock app onto your tablet or iPads at home if you want to try and beat your fastest time!

The Gruffalo continues to be our topic and we worked with the nursery to share our favourite characters, we all drew a picture and labelled it for our display while listening to the Gruffalo song. During Art we got out the paints and then created paintings of our favourite characters for our Art Gallery. We also finished our Gruffalo collage, we can’t wait to share it with you at Parent’s Night.

In writing we wrote a recount of our trip to the woods, congratulations to James and Klaudia who were our star writers.

As the sun was shining we took some learning outdoors for PE and Structured Play. We are all enjoying Athletics and are preparing well for Sports Day.

Awesome P3

Another week full of learning in Primary 3!

RE – NO POVERTY PRAYER

Following on from our activity last week to help understand what it might be like to not have the things we need, we discussed what that might mean. We talked about how it could mean not having a bed to sleep in or a warm house in the winter time or proper clothes to wear. The children were very receptive and each wrote their own prayer to Jesus which we have displayed in our classroom.

TALK IDEA – WHY DID THE COW JUMP OVER THE MOON?

Thanks so much for having this discussion with your child this week – here are some of the questions P3 came up with and their answers!

Jack – Why did he do it? For fun! – Kate

Richard – Was the moon big? Yes – enormous, gigantic! – Alexis, Huda

Ola – How did you actually manage to jump over the moon? Maybe he had jumping  hooves ! Sophie YM

Emily – Did you feel big compared to the moon? Yes – I felt massive!

Emma – How did you survive going through the moon’s atmosphere?

Michael – Did you see stars? What did it feel like?

Sophie R – Did you see aliens?

Alexis, Seamus –  Did you see rockets?

Sophie D, Sophie YM – Was the moon made out of cheese?

Robbie, Bartosz – If the moon was made of cheese, did you eat it?

Daniel – Did you see lots of planets up there?

Cameron – How did you breathe up there?

This is our talk question to discuss next week – we would love to see some of your responses on our blog and/or  your comments on this as a task?

MATHS

VOLUME – We wanted to see what 27 litres of water looked like because Jess the RHET farmer told us that a cow gives 27 litres of milk every day.

Sophie R – Each person filled a jug with water and poured it in to a plastic box.

Kate – We used jugs that measured up to 1 litre and then we filled them ourselves up to the line.

Ava – It looked a lot! Orla – that’s a lot of milk from a cow in one day!

DATA HANDLING & TECHNOLOGY – We worked in groups to measure our heights and decide whether we were more than 1 metre, about 1 metre or less than 1 metre.  If we were doing this task again we would challenge ourselves by recording our actual heights in metres and centimetres though! We showed this information on a tally chart then used it to make our own Bar Chart using technology. We used this online activity to make them https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/graphing/classic/bar_pie_data.asp?ChartType=bar

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING

Cameron – we got to look at Dedridge on Google Maps.

Jack – we had to look for places that we knew.

Sophie D, Maliha, Emily, Sophie YM, Sophie R, Jack, Cameron, Richard, Michael & Niamh – we found Lizzie Brice roundabout and Asda.

EXTRA CHALLENGE:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/  and key in Saint Ninian’s Primary School, Douglas Rise, Livingston

How long does it take to get to school by walking/by car/by bus?

Click on directions then key in home address to find out!

Why don’t you post  what you find out on the blog next week!

To reinforce their recent learning on what a noun is, Primary 3 had to read a passage about Lizzie Brice then spot all the nouns. Super work Primary 3!

WRITING

Richard – We wrote a thank you letter to Jess from RHET to thank her for coming in to visit us and telling us all about her farm. Mrs Scott was very impressed at how neat our handwriting was and our layout of a letter!

Have a lovely weekend from Mrs Scott and Primary 3!

P7 Weekly News!

We have had a busy week in P7. Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Liam – we have been set a competition by St Margaret’s to work in pairs to create a meal for an astronaut for their arrival back home. This meal has to be full of protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins to help his body after being up in space. The winner gets the chance to cook this meal at St Margaret’s.

Eve – this morning the House Captain’s presented the homework presentation to the class teachers on whether to change the school’s policy on homework given out or not.

Rachael – for those of us who have returned our signed contracts, we started using AAL today during lessons. We were all given our own logins for this.

Aimee – we started covering shape in maths this week. We were looking at quadrilaterals for 2D shapes and we are just starting onto 3D shapes.

Alice – in PE this week we had a combined lesson with P6/7 and played foot golf, frisbee golf and French boules.

Liam – also during the joint class in PE, we were also running some races by House.

Dallas – for the second PE lesson this week, we were jumping hurdles and had some relay races.

Charlie – in science this week did some experiments. Some of us had highlighted that we would like to learn some chemistry so we did the Coke and Mentos experiment and a lava lamp experiment using water, vegetable oil, food colouring and a fizzy tablet. These were good fun. We were also comparing our broad bean plants which were planted a few weeks ago. Some were kept in the light and some in the dark. Most of them have grown!

Have a good weekend.
