Primary 7 Weekly Round Up!

Weekly Highlights

In Literacy this week we have enjoyed exploring our new group novels; The Boy Who Grew Dragons, Goodnight Mr Tom and The Escape. Two of our novels are set in the war – we have been captivated by the context of the war and using this opportunity to explore new vocabulary. We are thinking about digging deeper into the text to use our analysis skills to figure out what message the author is conveying.

In numeracy we are continuing to explore strategies for multiplication and division. We have banned the use of ‘bus stop division’ and are now calling them ‘algorithms’ – very fancy! Maybe at home this weekend you could practice as a family? Try 148 divided by 5 and ask your child to explain to you the maths involved!

In HWB we have been exploring the theme of discrimination. After a very tense game of noughts and crosses, where the crosses were favoured over the noughts, we discussed what it feels like to be treated unfairly. We talked about what sectarianism is and how it is teased out in our class novel; Divided City.

Pupil Voice

Ryan B I learned about discrimination and inequality.

Mirren We learned about how to do division – it was a recap because I could already do it.

Dominika I learned about light and dark colours in art.

Brooke I learned to work with people who I wouldn’t usually – I didn’t know I would be as good at it.

Home Learning

This weekend it would be great for our pupils to show their families ‘Torn’ by Kelly Coyle and talk about what they have learned through exploring the piece of art. We talked about how the picture is a metaphor for something and we aren’t going to take it for its literal meaning as we can dig deeper to understand what the message behind it is.

Learning Overview

This week in numeracy we have been focusing on converting fractions, decimals and percentages. We completed fraction walls for our jotters to help with calculating percentages of amounts. We have also started our money topic and looked at calculating hire purchase costs and working out profit or loss.

In literacy we went outside to set up our literacy clans based on our class novel Wolf Brother. We are split in to four clans and we all have a clan name, symbol, call and a tree. We have created posters to display this information in our classroom. We have also started new reading books this week, primary 7 will be reading private peaceful and working towards writing a critical essay. Primary 6 will be starting Wilderness. In writing we have been focusing on explanation. Our first explanation was all about why animals hibernate.

To celebrate Burns’ we looked at the poem Tam O’Shanter. We enjoyed the story, even though it was a bit strange! The primary 6 pupils created comic strips to retell the story and the primary 7 pupils created their own replies to Tam from his poor wive, Kate.

In PE we are working on floor sequences in gymnastics. We will be performing these to the class very soon.

Primary 6 were all part of the Scottish Celebration today. They have been working hard to learn their lines and their songs. The show was fantastic!!

Family learning

Have a go at some Scots poetry this weekend. See if you can find some fun poems to read as a family.

We all enjoyed our outdoor learning this week. Try and spend some time outdoors as a family. Ask your child to name trees, plants or features in the landscape based on the wolf’s descriptions.

Pupil Voice

Kasia – I enjoyed PE this week with Mr Cummings. We got to use some of the equipment to do some sequences.

Shannon – I enjoyed writing the poem reply because it was fun to try and write in Scots.

Sean – I enjoyed writing the explanation about hibernation. It was an interesting topic to find out about and write about.

Emma – I enjoyed taking part in the Scottish Showcase today. It was really fun learning all the songs!

Reminder

We will be taking part in outdoor learning every Monday. Please remember to come prepared and with appropriate clothing!

Primary 7 Weekly Round Up!

Weekly Highlights

In Literacy this week we have been preparing for our trip to Sky Academy Studios. On this visit we will be splitting into four studios to create a trailer for our own movie/tv show. In groups of four we have looked at genres and created storyboards to illustrate the beginning, middle and end of our story. We will use our writing lesson next week to re-draft these and vote for our four favourite boards to use on the day.

In Numeracy we are getting our heads around word problems. Before Christmas we discussed how difficult we find word problems so we have started taking ten minutes at the beginning of our numeracy learning sessions to work with talk partners to solve word problems together – we have been looking at word problems that use multiplication and division. Perhaps you could come up with some at home together?

In HWB we have started our gymnastics block! We have been very happy to have Mr Cummings from St Margaret’s with us for our Wednesday PE slot and will continue to work on the gymnastics shapes, balances and creating sequence showing good posture. We have also begun our new Building Resilience unit where we are looking at our emotions and how complex they can be. We watched a smashing video of a wee baby who experiences some serious emotions in the space of one minute – watch together and enjoy, then discuss those emotions.

Pupil Voice

Daniel – I learned that when you are diving by ten you move all the digits to the left in the place value board.

Ryan T – I learned that away back when in Glasgow all the Catholics were said to support Celtic and all the non-Catholics supported Rangers – in my family half support Celtic and half support Rangers.

Ambra – I learned that Martin Luther King Jr helped people be equal even though they were born a different race.

Haseeb – We have been drawing and writing a story board. I chose fantasy/horror.

Abi – In PM writing we have been learning about the explanation genre.

Home Learning

This weekend it would be great to discuss discrimination as a family. It is a central theme in our class novel, ‘Divided City’ and has been interesting to discuss following our learning about Martin Luther King Jr. Next week all P7s are going to enter the Action on Sectarianism poster competition which will allow us to explore sectarianism in more depth.

Remember to follow our adventures on twitter;

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 6/7 weekly blog

Weekly overview

This week in maths we were calculating percentages of an amount, for example find 37% of 529ml. We were also converting fractions, decimals and percentages using the 10-5-1 rule. (Ask primary 7 about this at home). We also used our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages to order sets of fractions and to calculate costs of hire purchase.

In writing this week we have been focusing on descriptive writing. We had to use adjectives, adverbs and figurative language. We uses our class novel, Wolf Brother, for inspiration and described the setting, the main character and the demon bear.

We have also started our new science topic this week: Energy. We have learned about different types of energy and about energy transfer. We looked at household appliances and discussed the energy transfer taking place. We also made a paper helicopter to look at the transfer of potential energy to kinetic energy.

In PE we have been focusing on floor sequences with Mr Cummings. We were using a range of rolls and balances whilst working in small groups.

Pupil Voice

Robbie – I enjoyed learning about fractions in maths.

Ola – I enjoyed practising for our upcoming p5 & 6 showcase.

Ailie – I enjoyed making sequences in PE

Louise – I enjoyed converting fractions, decimals and percentages with Mrs MacDonald.

Family Tasks

Have a look out for any discounts using fractions or percentages whilst you are out shopping or any adverts you see on tv or in the paper. Ask your child to show you how they would calculate the new cost.

Pupils have been using a new app called Flipgrid to create videos about their learning. Ask them to sign in online to show you their Spanish conversations and I Have a Dream Speeches.

Primary 6/7 Weekly News

Learning overview

We have had a busy week in primary 6/7 and have completed lots of assessments.
We were able to show our knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have to remember our mathematical vocabulary to help us to understand questions. We are continuing to work on calculating sale costs using our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages.
We are nearly finished our group novels and will be ready to start new books next term. We will continue to focus on using evidence from the text to support answers and start to analyse the texts further.

Everyone has been working hard in Scottish Dancing and we are prepared for our Christmas parties next week. We also had the opportunity to help the nursery with their dances which was lots of fun!

Primary 7 also had the opportunity to go swimming at St. Margaret’s on Monday. Everyone enjoyed playing games in the pool and especially using the floats!

We celebrated the 2nd week of Advent today with a Mass led by Fr Kenneth. Tho whole class took part in preparing for mass; our readers and IT team were excellent today – well done!

It was great to see so many families at our Cake and Carols event today. Everyone enjoyed singing along with the audience – thank you!

Next Steps

Continue to work on calculating sale prices at home and the next time you are out at the shops. We have also been discussing best value and why some special offers aren’t always that great! Try to find some examples when you are out and about.

It would be great if some families could take part in the family activities for our Rights Respecting School Award. Mrs Conway has been posted these each month and they have been shared on Twitter – have a look and share your responses with us here!!

A reminder that next week is party week!!!

Primary 6 will have their party on Wednesday afternoon and primary 7 will have theirs on Thursday afternoon.

P7 Weekly Round Up!

Another busy week in P7!

Weekly Highlights

This week saw us with a big focus on ENTERPRISE as we prepared our stall for the Christmas fair. We chose to make stickers to sell and started by creating a  business plan. We worked out how much our materials had cost, how many stickers we wanted to make and how much we needed to sell them for in order to make a profit. We were delighted to cover our costs and make a profit which is going towards a new promethean board for our school!

In literacy this week we have been thinking more carefully about writing a quality exposition. We know that an exposition gives one point of view. It begins with a statement of position. This week we have learned all about the suffragettes and even had a real life suffragette in the classroom! We retained so much knowledge from this activity which we used to argue that the suffragettes were justified in their use of violence to gain the right to vote.

In numeracy this week we have been showing a real growth mindset through our work on word problems. We find this really difficult and have spent time as a whole class looking at strategies for working out these problems. Mrs Macdonald has been using a bar model to help us work out word problems so this is a strategy we are exploring. Krystian suggested we look at one word problem each day in maths and working with our talk partners to share ideas, this is something we will start after the Christmas holidays.

Next week we have our upper school election on the same day as the General Election – we have been working in our political parties to write a manifesto and create a party political broadcast which we will present to the upper school next week. Pupils will then complete a polling card and cast their ballot to elect the upper school prime minister.

Pupil Voice

Oliwia I learned to use the bar model for word problems, it was good.

Haseeb Word problems were quite challenging but now I’m getting used to it I’ll use bar models.

Aleks I loved PE with the nursery this week – they are funny!

Ryan T We did a new thing at Scottish Country dancing where we did a high school level dance to Cotton Eyed Joe.

Ambra I loved learning about the suffragettes – the best bit was hearing about the suffragettes telling their story, what is was like and how they were feeling.

Aria I liked trying something new for PE doing the basketball game.

Learning at home

To celebrate our Big Build team winning a runners up place in the national competition – this weekend spend some time at home discussing the different types of buldings in our local area  which ones are old, which are new, how do you know?

Thursday is the General Election – talk about where your polling station is and how you decide who to vote for. If possible, take your child to the polling station with you to give them the real life experience!

Remember to keep up to date with us on Twitter!

P7 Weekly Round Up!

Another busy week in P7!

Weekly Highlights

This week has marked the end of our Big Build competition entry preparation. It has been a busy few weeks for the children involved, who have given up lunchtimes and any free class time to get it all organised! Mrs Scott has led this project with the P7 group and had Ian from Crudden homes in on Wednesday to discuss the progress and organise a visit to take final photos and have a presentation on the ideas behind the Big Build.

We also had our second transition visit this week with Group B – we enjoyed a science lesson with Dr  McAllister and a swimming session in the pool where we made our way across the breadth of the pool and back, then competed in teams to collect the most ‘sinkers’.

In numeracy this week we continue to work on addition and subtraction and discuss, explore and experiment with different strategies, always aiming for accuracy. We finished our week by revising the rules of the standard written algorithm (tower sum, chimney sum) for addition and are beginning to use this mathematical language as we move forward. Perhaps you could have a timed challenge working out 3/4/5 digit addition against each other at home this weekend?

In literacy this week we took part in the Book Week Scotland activities by entering the Scottish Book Trust 50 word fiction competition – we used our writing lesson to recap the rules of a narrative and used the context of a conversation to write our entries. The competition is available to adults and children and the context changes on a monthly basis. If you would like to enter the competition yourself you can do so at this link;

Pupil Voice

Mirren At transition we did swimming and science and it was really fun!

Aleks At transition we did lots of fun stuff in science about a bunsen burner.

Brooke We had to plug the rubber cord into the gas tap and then you push it down and turn it then the same person or the other person would light it with the lighter.

Daniel We did the 50 word story and it was fun.

Finlay In maths we used numeracy skills to do tower sums but we are calling them something different

Mirren We used leadership skills to help the nursery with PE.

Daniel We used teamwork in science (transition) when we had to figure out whether cotton, felt or bubble wrap kept the water warm (Brooke an insulator). We used a silver cup which would usually make the water cool down.

Learning at home

This weekend please take the time to read for enjoyment – we used book week Scotland to launch our new class reading challenge – we are going to try to read to the height of Mrs Conway. Every time we finish a book we will draw around the spine of it and add it to the ‘pile’ by sticking it on the wall –  Mrs Conway has agreed a whole class treat if we get to the target by June!

Remember to keep up to date with us on Twitter!

Primary 6/7 Weekly News

Class News

This week we have been celebrating Catholic Education week. We have focused on the Gospel Values and the importance of being kind. This tied in very well with our learning about small acts of kindness last week and also with what we have been working on during our Pope Francis Faith Award sessions. We have discussed how our School Values reflect the Gospel Values and what we can do to ensure we are always being as kind as possible.

We have also been reminded about the importance of Road Safety for Road Safety Week. Our newly appointed Junior Road Safety Officers delivered a very informative assembly to the whole school. Well done Ola and Orla! We are looking forward to finding out who has won the competitions!

In literacy we have started a new writing genre – exposition. Can you remember all the sections of the next?
Four our first exposition we were writing about children having protected time to play during school hours. This has caused much debate in our class and also ties in with our new ‘play’ area in the upper area.
Family Discussion Point – Should children have additional time to play during school hours? Let us know your views as a family in the comments.

Pupil Voice:

We enjoyed the last week of Rugby because we did a big tournament. We have really enjoyed our rugby block! (Mark, Evie and Adrin)

In bike ability this week we went on the road. We had to follow all the traffic rules and use our hand signals. It was very important to listen to the teacher at all times to keep ourselves safe. (Robbie and Levente)

We enjoyed creating our ideas for the mural competition in art this week. We also enjoyed creating our Beatitudes posters for our kindness display. (Louise and Ailie)
