P6/7 News

This week in P6/7 we have had a jam-packed week and it has been brilliant! As this week is Scottish week, we researched information about St. Andrew and made posters. On Wednesday the P6s practised descriptive writing about Scottish landscapes and then we decorated our work with a tartan border. We also had a visit from a Scottish story teller who told us all a story called ‘Our Scotland’ which we really enjoyed. In P.E. we are still taking part in Scottish dancing and this week we were practising with the P7s.

We are currently completing division in maths and although it is a little bit hard, we are really enjoying being able to choose what group we go in and we are coping with it fine!

Today we had our Ninian’s Natter and this time we had 4 different carousel stations (learning conversation with Mrs Reeves or a partner, personal study and research for our science topic). We are also continuing with our daily learning conversations with Mrs Reeves.

Scotland Week in P7

This week in P7 we celebrated Scotland Week. We shared our knowledge about St. Andrew in RE and played a game of charades in drama where we had to act out something Scottish and other children had to guess what we were. We also discussed some common Scottish stereotypes and compared these with the reality of living in Scotland. It was very interesting to think about what people think Scotland is like and of course we all know we don’t really wear kilts and chase haggis around the hills!!!

In literacy we thought about some Scottish words and found out some of their meanings. One of our favourites was clype! We also enjoyed researching Scottish castles and designing the ‘perfect castle’ which had all of the best defence equipment and even some more modern additions!

We finished the week with Ninian’s Natter where we got the chance to talk to each other about our learning and goals. We are all enjoying P7 and achieving the goals which we have set ourselves. Well done everyone!

Primary 6/7 News

This week we have been really busy as usual! On Tuesday all the Primary 6’s went to the Lanthorn and took part in a St Andrews Cluster assembly with pupils from several other schools. We all discussed the life of St Andrew. Then on Wednesday we had a fantastic time when ‘The Travelling Tuba’ paid us a visit and we took part in a  music workshop where we all worked together to produce a piece of Brazilian music which we later performed in front of the whole school.

We have been making great progress with practising our multiplication skills in Maths this week and now feel ready to move on to some division next week! In French we wrote some Chinese portrait poems which described ourselves in many different ways. We continued to perfect our Scottish dancing in P.E. although this week we danced to modern music for a change!

Have a great weekend from Primary 6/7 and Mrs Reeves

P7 Weekly News

This week in P7 we enjoyed our second visit to St. Margaret’s where we learned about how Nicholas Winton saved the lives of 669 Jewish children at the start of WW2. We also learned about the life of Anne Frank through group research using laptops.

In class we have been learning about the brain as part of our Sport Science topic and we did an experiment to see which was our more dominant side, left or right. For most of us, our right side was the more dominant!

In maths we have now completed the topic of money and will begin learning about angles next week.  If you would like to get ahead of the game feel free to watch this short YouTube clip as a reminder about angles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM6zued_V5Q

Finally we were very lucky to have a visit from a musical company called ‘Travelling by Tuba’. Chris and Stuart entertained us with their amazing musical skills and then let us experiment with some samba instruments which we made in to a short performance for the rest of the school. We had lots of fun making music and we hope to continue trying out new instruments and making our own music in the coming weeks.

This week in P6/7 we have been learning about pets in Spanish we made posters about the different kind of pets. They have very unusual names like un perro (dog), un conejillo de Indias, (Guinea pig)and  un caballo (pony/horse).

This Wednesday we started our Scottish dancing. Mr McCurdy said that we all participated well and worked hard. Then on Thursday we did Scottish dancing again but with Mrs. Reeves she said we all did well too! We have been working on our Science topic over the past few weeks. In our investigation into mould, we have found out that the mouldiest bread was the wet bread in class and also the wet bread in a dark cupboard. The least mouldy were the slices that were put in the fridge and in the freezer.

Experiment 1 024

In maths we have been doing co-ordinates with Mrs Keegan and played a few games to do with co- ordinates like battleship, finding the co-ordinates and spelling out the co-ordinates.

On Thursday we had a special visitor from the SSPCA who told us  about endangered animals in the wild like the red squirrels, grey squirrels, various birds and much more.

Have a great weekend from all of P6/7 and Mrs Reeves!

Keeping Up With Current Global Issues In P7

During Anti-Bullying week we have been using our drama skills to write a script about bullying and act this out. Children have also been learning about different types of bullying and making decisions about what to do in a bullying scenario. In P7 we are very lucky that we get on with each other very well and bullying is not a problem although we are very aware of what to do if it did become an issue for anyone.

On Tuesday we visited St. Margaret’s Academy where we got to do lots of social studies related activities about children in WW2 Germany. We learned about the Hitler Youth and the Persecution of the Jews and we are excited to go up again next week to learn some more!

In our topic, Sport Science, we have been learning about the main organs in the human body. We worked in groups and drew round someone and then painted on the main organs in the correct places. It was really fun!

In maths we have been focusing on money and learning about bills, receipts, comparing items to select the best value for money and debit cards. Parents beware – your children are all desperate for a bank card!!

Finally, this week in P7 we have started to watch CBBC Newsround every morning. The children were very upset by what happened in Paris so instead of having a one day discussion and moving on from there we have decided to keep up to date with the news every day by watching a 3-5 minute clip of today’s headlines. This has been really effective in getting the children to talk about the world and current global issues and each day we have taken a few moments to think about others in our world and really appreciate what we have.

Have a great weekend!

This week in Primary 6/7 as part of our Science topic we have been looking at the results of our mouldy bread investigation and we also took part in another investigation looking at the effect of salt  when we try to freeze water.

In Writing, we finished our Middle Ages stories and we learnt some facts about the Black Death. We tried a new system in Maths, which allows us to choose our activity and decide if we want to try an extra challenge task.

On Thursday those of us in Whithorn were able to go to Pizza Express as our prize for winning the house points and the rest of us all enjoyed attending our class mass at St Philips along with other members of the community. Afterwards we were delighted to have a chance for a short play at the park!!

Finally we finished off the week with a Dress Down Day in support of Children in Need.

P7 Weekly News

This week in maths we have been learning about the different formulae used for calculating speed, distance and time. We learned about the magic triangle which we can use to work out what formula should be used each time by covering up the aspect which you are trying to work out to reveal the process of this: speed = distance/time, time = distance/speed or distance = speed x time.

Within our topic (Sport Science) we have been learning about the parts and functions of the lungs and how we can keep our lungs pink and healthy throughout our lives. To help us really understand how our lungs work we did an investigation where we used a plastic bottle, a plastic bag, a balloon and an elastic band to create a model of the lungs and this allowed us to see that when we breathe oxygen in, the diaphragm flattens/moves down and when we breathe carbon dioxide out, the diaphragm moves up.

Next Tuesday we will be visiting St. Margaret’s Academy for the first of our 3 weeks of transition mornings. The theme of this is ‘Children in Conflict’ which should link really well with some work we have already done on refugees.

Have a great weekend!
