P6/7 Weekly News

Primary 6/7 have all been working hard as usual! We have been carrying out lots of research for our Victorians topic and we have even been  learning facts about Queen Victoria in French! This week we  have  been finding out information about the terrible conditions of child labour during the Victorian times and we have used our facts to help us write a report as part of our writing. In drama we have started to create short scenes where we have been reporting on the issues of child labour and we peer and self-assessed our work by recording ourselves and watching the videos on the Smartboard. We are going to continue with this over the next few weeks, so that we can improve our performances.

We are all excited about the thought of next week. Some of the Primary 6s are going to be Skiing or Snowboarding at the start of the week and the rest of us are going to be involved with a mini-topic, where we will be working with some of the other pupils from Primary 5/6. On Thursday we will be able to all share our experiences, which will be really interesting.

Have a great weekend!

P7 Weekly News

This week in P7 we have been celebrating Robert Burns Day. The children used their ICT skills and worked in groups to research and create a PowerPoint on Robert Burns and then presented this to the class. We also analysed the Burns’ poem ‘A Red, Red Rose’ and even managed to draw our own roses which look really impressive!

On Wednesdays we work as a whole P7 group for writing with Miss Ford and Mrs Docherty. This week it was really funny because we got to write Scottish poems using Scots vocabulary such as: rammy, totie, nicht, minging, hame, bonnie and sleekit. Do you know what all of these words mean?

We also held a debate this week about the current government proposal of the sugar tax. This was something we heard about on CBBC Newsround and with our topic being democracy we decided to share our thoughts and ideas by having a debate. Just over half of the class liked the idea of the sugar tax because of the benefits this would have on the health of our nation although some people thought that increasing the price wasn’t the best way to create a healthier population. We would be interested to hear some of your thoughts too and we will be looking out for more information on the sugar tax in the near future.

Have a great weekend!

This week in P7 we have been learning about Suffragettes as part of our Democracy topic. In writing we created a speech which we would have presented to the government at the time when the suffragettes were trying to get the vote for women and we also enjoyed learning about some of the tactics which they used by listening to a Horrible Histories song. The link is below for you to enjoy, it’s really funny!

In maths we have been working on scale drawings which many people use in their everyday lives and jobs. We have been measuring scales used on maps and scale drawings which architects use when designing buildings.

Finally, we are using Muckle Reading again this term and this week we started our first task map. It is really important that we learn to answer all different types of questions and that we always do our reading homework so that we can keep up with the storyline. Some of the questions which we use are taken from Blooms. There is a link to some example questions below.

P6/7 Weekly News

This week Primary 6/7 have been working very hard as usual! We started our new topic about the Victorians and the P7s in our class are now joining together to work with the P7 class to learn about Democracy.  We linked drama with our topic this week, and we looked at several photos of Victorian children and created some short scenarios. We all think we are going to love our new topic!

In R.E. we have been learning about the seven sacraments: Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Communion, Marriage, Holy Orders and Sacrament of the Sick. For Maths we have started learning about decimals and fractions and we are now able to identify proper and improper fractions and convert them to mixed number. We have been learning about weather, days of the week, months, and seasons during Spanish and French.

During Writing we have been describing what we think of when we listen to happy and sad music and we have also been discussing how the differences in pitch can affect our feelings. We had some really varied ideas and thoughts!

We have been continuing with flight in gymnastics, making routines on our own and with partners. On Wednesday Dallas, Callum, Charlie, Alice and Aimee, along with a few more pupils from other classes stayed in after school to help Mr McCurdy with gymnastics  with all the teachers. We really enjoyed helping out and demonstrating our fantastic gymnastic skills.

P7 Weekly News

This week in P7 we created our new class charter. We considered the main themes in our school values and the UN rights of the child and decided that we would make our overall theme about respect as this makes it easy to understand rather than having lots of statements to learn and abide by. We have changed our wall display to ’emojis’ so that each child in the class is represented by one of their favourite emojis which they use on their phones/tablets etc. Our charter is also linked to Class Dojo so that we are very clear on when we are abiding by our class charter and when we are not (which is very rare in P7!)

We also started our new topic this week which is Democracy. We are very excited about this as for the first time in topic work we are working as a whole P7 group with the P7 children from P6/7 joining us. So far we have talked about the features of a democratic government and written a manifesto as if we were a leader running for a political party. We really enjoyed writing these as we were able to debate things like education, health and the environment which was really interesting.

Have a great weekend!

Primary 6/7 News

This has been a short week to start the New Year but we have had a very positive start!  We have all been thinking about our school values and how important they are to us at St. Ninian’s. We have been learning about the origins of New Year’s celebrations and we have also been thinking about having a Growth Mindset when writing our New Year’s resolutions for 2016! We hope we will be successful with them.

In P.E. we have now started gymnastics and our focus is currently flight and in Spanish we have been remembering the words for the days of the week and also learning the months of the year.

To finish off the week some of our Primary 7s are off on a rugby trip later this afternoon and we hope they have lots of fun and tell us all about it next week.

Happy New Year and have a great weekend.

feliz año nuevo de P7

This week in P7 we have had a great start to the New Year. We made New Year’s resolutions and learned how to say happy New Year in Spanish – Feliz año nuevo!

We started back on 6th of January which was Epiphany so the children had a go at ‘hot seating a King’ where they used drama skills along with their knowledge of the feast of Epiphany to ask and answer questions about the kings’ experience.

As it was also Vision and Values week we enjoyed creating pictures which showed what the school values looked like for us. We also linked our school values to the rights of the child and found that even in the first 5 rights we could make 3 direct links to our values.

This week we also started our new PE block – gymnastics. The children enjoyed working in groups to create sequences to music which showed creativity and confidence in performance.

What a fabulous festive time we’ve had this week!

We have been learning lots of Christmas vocabulary in both French and Spanish and we had lots of fun on Tuesday wearing our Christmas jumpers and enjoying our delicious Christmas lunch.

Then we were thrilled to enjoy the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime on Thursday  which made us all laugh so much! After that we had our Christmas party which was a huge success and we all joined in with our Scottish dancing.

Several members of our class took part in many activities involving the school choir and the brass band. We also performed ‘Walking in the Winter Wonderland’ for our Christmas sing-a-long and we were so excited to be able to sing at the Coffee and Carols too.

Now we are ready to enjoy our Christmas holidays and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Primary 6/7 News

This has been another busy week for Primary 6/7. For our Science topic, we have all been designing and making Science laboratory shoe boxes and this week we brought them into school and started to discuss them. We also attended the Achievement assembly on Thursday, where we enjoyed listening to the junior concert band.  Sally was lucky enough to win the award for going the extra mile in our class. In Maths we have begun our new topic about time and we are going to be learning about converting 12 hour to 24 hour times next week.

We had the opportunity to watch the Primary 1 and Primary 2 boys and girls take part in their Infant Nativity which was fantastic and started to get us all in the mood for Christmas! After that we started to practise our class Christmas song in preparation for our sing-a-long next week. We also learned some Christmas Spanish vocabulary and listened to the Christmas story with Mrs Keegan.

Today was our ‘Dress as your future job’ day so most of us came to school dressed as our dream jobs. We had teachers, basketball players, vets, a swimmer, a paleontologist, a nurse, a lawyer, a footballer and even a secret spy to name but a few!

P7 Weekly News

This week in P7 we have been busy with our termly spelling and writing assessments. In our writing assessment the genre was imaginative so we decided to focus on the current topical issues of developing countries and refugees. Within this we wrote a diary entry from a child living in a developing country during the festive season. We thought about the rights which we have compared to theirs and also how different our lives are throughout the year but especially at Christmas. In doing this we were able to share our concern for those less fortunate who we must always remember to help in any way we can even with just a prayer.

In our topic work this week we learned about the structure of muscles and even did an experiment about our muscles and how they react with our brain. It was very fun as we got to blindfold our partner and give them a heavy cup filled with marbles and a slightly lighter one and asked them to identify which cup was heavier through the connection between their muscles and brain.

Finally, this week we also celebrated our achievements assembly. It is great to see how fantastic the children in our school are so well done to everyone and a special well done to the P1 and P2 children who performed their nativity for us earlier in the week. You did so well up on the stage in front of a great big audience!

Have a great weekend everyone!
