P7-6

Here are some of the highlights from our week.

Art – we investigated water colour mixing to create effective medieval landscape pictures.  We were very pleased with our results.

Maths – P7 were working with negative numbers and were making links to real life skills by reading a thermometer scale with negative values.  The Oil Rig dice game was a big hit!  You could even make your own simple version at home and teach your parents the rules…who can reach the platform first!

IMG_1037[1]

P6 continued to work with large numbers and again linked this to real life skills by learning how to fill out a bank cheque, I wish I had been receiving some of the cheques which had values into hundreds of  pounds!

The whole class have learned how to play the game Shut The Box, which focuses on recalling basic number bonds as well as playing smart (turn over the large numbers early on!).  Again this is a game you can make at home by either making your own number cards 1 – 9 or using these values from a pack of cards and two dice.  If anyone makes the game and teaches their parents let me know how you got on by posting a blog.

Literacy – we have continued using our class novel to base our literacy work on and completed our first tasks map.  We started our first piece of writing on Thursday about memories, and we are looking through an elderly mans eyes into his life and past experiences and we are going to be completing an imagined response to this man’s memories when he looks through a squint.  Make sure you log on next week to read snippets of the children’s work.

PE – This was a huge success this week with nearly all children remembering to bring appropriate equipment for their outdoor learning.  Both the rugby and hockey groups were very pleased with their chosen sport.

Just as a reminder, reading books were given out this week.  I do ask that these are brought into school every day as we complete follow up work based on the novels which can span over a few days.

To finish off we would like to mention Fr Paul.  He came into our school this week and we surprised him with an assembly and a P7 afternoon tea.  He was genuinely delighted and touched and I’m sure his eyes looked a little watery at one point!  Thank you Fr Paul.

Have a great weekend

Mrs Currie

Another Busy Week in P7

This week in Primary 7 has been packed with learning. Here are some of the things we have been doing:

Aidan, Sally and Lianne: We celebrated Father Paul’s last day on Thursday where we presented him with a scrapbook which the children in every class put together for him. We also had a leaving assembly for him where we sang a song we made up and then the Primary 7 children enjoyed a farewell tea party with lots of cakes!!!

Catherine, Nikki and Liam: We have continued to read our class novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This week we made our very own chocolate bar designs, tried to think of different scenarios for when Charlie opens the chocolate bar wrapper and finds the golden ticket, used the best up-levelled adjectives we could think of in writing to describe Mr Willy Wonka and then we also did a group task where we worked together to create either: a new book cover, a museum display, a wordl of emotions the children felt when they walked in to the chocolate room and different gates for entering the chocolate factory.

Kaden: On Monday we started a new thing called Monday Circles where we worked in our house groups with children from P5-7. Our task was to answer 3 questions about Anytime Anywhere Learning (AAL) and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

Liam: In maths we have started learning about place value. So far we have been using whiteboards to put numbers in to the correct columns (Millions, Hundred Thousands, Ten Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Units. We then did a few different activities on the netbooks, using the maths website Top Marks. After this we thought about where place value is important in real life situations and we used the football transfer deadline day to link our learning as footballers were bought and sold for huge record amounts of money this year.

Avelon: In PE our topic is team games so with Mr McCurdy we played either Hockey or Rugby depending on what we had selected last week and with Miss Ford we played a new style of the traditional game, rounders – it was very tiring!

Joshua: For homework we were doing an activity called the shoe box portrait where we put precious things in to a box and showed these to a group. This allowed us to get to know more about each other.

Charlie: Finally we did our first Literacy carousel where our activities included: handwriting, comprehension, spelling and grammar and we also gave Miss Ford our ideas about what we would like to learn this term.

Have a great weekend!

Primary 7/6 blog post

Welcome back everyone.  It has been such a quick week but we have achieved a lot.  Here is our new class.

IMG_0504[1]

Our Primary Sixes look very smart in their green and yellow school uniform and our senior Primary Sevens look very grown up in their black and yellow uniform.

Our focus in class for the next three weeks will be based on a novel called The Squint by Lesley Howarth.  We have read the first four chapters so far and found out that this story takes place in the modern era as well as the medieval period of history.  The main character Ben looks though a squint (spyhole) whilst visiting a historical house and finds himself part of one of his ancient ancestors lives story!  As a link from this novel we have been learning about medieval coats of arms. In pairs the children were given the opportunity to use a website to create their own.  Here is the link we used,

http://www.makeyourcoatofarms.com/app.asp

Our class will have PE on a Tuesday and Thursday in school.  On Tuesday’s Mr McCurdy has requested that the children bring in outdoor PE kit suitable for all weathers (within reason!).  The children were given a choice between rugby or hockey as their chosen PE lesson on a Tuesday.  On Thursday PE will be in the school gym hall.

For maths we have focused on place value, numbers up to millions.  We have practised reading them, writing them in digits and words.  For extra practise you can try this game.

Have a lovely weekend and I am really looking forward to next week and getting on with all the great activities and events that are planned.

Well done everyone,

Mrs Currie

A Warm Welcome Back to School from Primary 7!

Primary 7 have had a great start to their final year at St. Ninian’s and are already impressing everyone with their sensible attitudes and very smart black uniforms! Here are some of the things we have been doing this week:

Sally: On Tuesday when we first arrived in our new classroom we did a scavenger hunt to learn our way around the classroom and find out where things like resources are kept.

Eve Macdougall: At the start of every new term we make a class charter which we aim to abide by throughout the term in order to allow for the best learning and teaching to occur. This term we made presentations with our group ideas for the charter and we voted to have Pokemon as our theme. So far we have picked a character each to draw and paint and shared our ideas to create the charter rules.

Avelon: On Wednesday we wrote a letter to Miss Ford to explain ourselves. In our letter we wrote about our likes and dislikes in and out of school, ways in which we learn best and what our ideal classrooms would be like.

Aidan: We have also made P7 passports to allow us to enter our new school year! These contained important information about us and what we hope to achieve over the next year.

Paris and Rebecca: In P.E. we played reverse dodgeball where the rules are the opposite of normal dodgeball.

Catherine: In our learning we always have a goal which we are working towards and this week we made a dream tree by writing our goals on leaves.

Freya: We have also been making personal shields about ourselves. Our shields have 4 sections for us to draw and write things which are important to us or things which we like to do.

Aimee: Our first Primary 7 topic is a novel study and we have started the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Charlie: Finally, this term in P.E. we are working together with children from Primary 6/7. Mr McCurdy gave us all a choice for our P.E. curriculum between Rugby or Hockey. We are excited to start this next week!

Have a great weekend everyone!

It’s been emotional…

Collage 2016-06-03 19_24_10

We made it to the end of the week, and what a week it has been. It’s the last blog post from camp and we don’t know where to start!

This morning we got off to a slow start and cases had to be packed, this was difficult for some of us but we got there eventually even with Miss Smyth taking left over belongings to breakfast to make sure we got it all! After another good breakfast the teachers gave each child an award…ask your child what their award was for, we certainly chuckled when making them up!!

A few different activities this morning and another shot on the zipslide, some of us even tried to go upside down!

We ate lunch outside and even had a some birthday cake!

We said an emotional goodbye to all the staff at Ford Castle, they really were so kind to all of us and looked after us all so well!

Thanks for a fantastic week!

The children who went to camp were an absolute credit to themselves and to their families. They brought so much fun and enthusiasm each day and made it an absolute pleasure to spend this quality time with them, the staff have laughed so much with the children and created memories that we will continue to laugh about! Thank you all so much 💚💚💛💛

Man overboard…

Collage 2016-06-02 21_23_30

Well what a day, where do we begin? Another good breakfast to set us up for the day ahead…we certainly needed it today.

Canoeing, knight quest, nightline and Ford phototrail were the activities today. We were all excited about going canoeing, and the weather was on our side!

The first group had a great time and managed to paddle through the rapids, even though Max dropped his paddle which gave us all a giggle! The second group started off so well but Mrs Gardner, Aaron, Tiree , Alice and Taylor S felt the need to test the temperature of the water and their boats capsized, a shock at first but we’ve all managed to share a good giggle about it tonight.

It’s D.I.S.C.O time tonight and we’re having a fab time!

We can’t believe it’s the last night we’re so sad to head home tomorrow!

See you soon!

Rio here we come…

Collage 2016-06-01 21_47_27

Well what a day we’ve had, we’ve laughed, cried and even competed in our very own castle Olympics!

We started off with a very wet morning but we were determined to keep our spirits up and sang our hearts out as we took part in team games, Jacob’s ladder and crate stack!

This afternoon the sun came out for us as we took part in potions class, making potions to change things about the teachers, we then went off to the field and participated in high all aboard and Postman’s walk.

After a brilliant dinner of roast chicken and chocolate eclairs we competed in castle Olympics, it was so much fun!!

We are all so excited about canoeing tomorrow!

Primary 6/7 News

This week we have been very busy as usual.

For our topic we have been learning all about the brain. We made some model brains to help us learn about the different parts of the brain and to discover which areas control the many different processes and thoughts that we have. We then created drama scenes to explain how our brain works.

Brain models 001 Brain models 002 Brain models 003 Brain models 004 Brain models 006

During P.E. we practised the 200 metres and continued with our Daily Mile to help us prepare for the Cross Country run next week.

We also learnt the names of different parts of the body in French.

In Maths we played some active games to help us use probability language to describe how likely something might happen.

Have a great weekend!
