Time flies by in P6/7

James gave us the title of our blog this week as we discussed how quickly the week had gone.

It all started on Monday where we did some focused vocabulary work linked to our class novel, everyone agreed that it was a pretty tricky task as we had to guess what the word meant by using the text surrounding it then look up it’s actual definition in the dictionary. Do you know what these words mean – reproached and suppurating? Place value is our focus in numeracy this week and we did some paired, independent and group tasks on Monday morning using resources like dominoes and flashcards to play different games to develop our confidence in reading different numbers. The afternoon saw us being introduced to Emotion Works, a whole school HWB resource. Again we linked this to our novel and used the emotion cogs to unpick each of the characters feelings in chapter 1 whilst working in teams.

On Tuesday we were very excited to start our rugby block with Mr McCurdy and everyone came well prepared for the outdoors! We had our first numbertalks session and showed Mrs Roy our explanation skills and mathematical thinking. In our novel study we read chapter 2 and were introduced to our Blooms Superheroes which will help us develop our reading comprehension skills this year. We all chose which questions we would like to tackle and tried to match these up to the superheroes. The afternoon continued with a novel theme and we started some ‘Hokusai’ inspired pictures, we used pastels to try and recreate the famous ‘Great Waves’ painting. Mrs Roy was in awe of our artistic skills!

Writing was a focus on Thursday morning and we used a previous talk lesson linked to our novel to write a balanced argument with the title: Sailing around the world. Everyone gave it their best shot and tried to use persuasive language. In numeracy we began to split numbers and partition them, as the numbers got bigger this became more difficult. We will continue to focus on this next week.

Friday ended the week nicely as we finished our earlier art work and got to do our first Big Maths Beat that challenge. We also went outside with Mrs Roy for a fun rugby session where we learned how to play banana tig with a rugby ball and practised our passing in small teams. The sun stayed out and we didn’t get wet, so that was a bonus.

This week we also welcomed Mr Turner to our class, a 3rd year student training to be a teacher, he will continue to work alongside Mrs Roy each week to support us in our learning.

And finally, the UN Ambassador’s came round all the classes this morning to announce that we had successfully achieved the Level 2 Award for RRS. We were all really pleased especially as some of the people in our class were in that committee last year. Well done everyone!!

Pupil voice:

Louise – We played rugby and it was lots of fun.

Isla – We did Big Maths on Friday.

Amera  – Rugby was fun and wet!

Isabel – Our Kensuke’s Kingdom collage is now up on display and looks good.

Rachel H – We all dressed down today to raise money for charity.

Primary 7 Weekly News

This week in primary 7 we have been doing reading and maths for our smart starts.

The book we have been reading as a class is called Wonder. The reason we are reading Wonder is because we are focusing on kindness. In wonder the main character is August and he has a deformed face. We have made our own portraits of ourselves in the form of August’s picture on the front cover so that we realise that you shouldn’t make fun of people or judge people even if they look different. We included words to describe ourselves around our portraits which will be used for a wall display next week.

This week we have also been focusing on counting above millions. We have been revising place value and using this to help us with numbers beyond 1 million. We went outside for maths to revise our knowledge of angles and took pictures of angles outside.

In PE we have started Rugby with Mr McCurdy and Miss McCormack did a bootcamp session working on our stamina.

Pupil voice and photographs:

Isabela – On Tuesday we played Rugby.

Ali – On Thursday we went outside and found some angles.

Emma – This week we started to make a design for our wonder wall and we have finished making our class charter.

Edwin – this week for P.E we did rugby and it was fun.

Emily – this week we started playing rugby in P.E. and on Thursday we did bootcamp wich was really tiring but still fun.

Erin R- On Thursday we had assembly and Father Kenneth and Father Matthew came to assembly  and talked to us about Malawi.

Erin O- On Wednesday we wrote diary entries based on our class novel Wonder. We had to write as if we were august going to school for the first time in his life.

Primary 7 Weekly News

It’s been a great first week back in Primary 7.

We completed a very tough teamwork challenge to crack open the box! All teams worked well together solving problems. We had to remember some maths and numeracy knowledge, as well as some Spanish. Problem solving skills were used to try and decipher new codes and find hidden clues.

We have enjoyed taking part in the ‘Door Challenge’ and have created a kindness door. Our door is full of kind messages for anyone to take if they need a boost 🙂

Our class novel is Wonder. We have been introduced to the main character August, who is just about to start school for the first time. We have been building character profiles to show what each character is like. The book has been enjoyable so far and we cannot wait to hear the rest of the story.

We have been getting to know each other a bit better this week with lots of class work and games. We all tried to make connections with each other and passes some wool around as we found a connection. This resulted in a massive web and made it easy to see just how well we are connected as a class!

All the buddies haven been fantastic this week and are doing a great job – well done guys!

It’s been a very successful week and a great way to start our Primary 7 journey!

We’re back……

Well what a great start to the year it has been, everyone has been really enthusiastic and raring to get started!

The week began with some creativity and we worked in small teams to create a class song/rap and wordle. We used the mindmaps we had made on our moving up day in June to help us. It was lovely to see the confidence in many as they stood up in front of a new class to perform. Follow us on Twitter @mrsroy16 to see some of the videos we took.

Our Wordle is now at the heart of our new class charter which has taken the theme of ‘Animals’ as voted by the class. Everyone came up with suggestions as to the content of our charter and this is now on display for all to see.

We have enjoyed taking part in the ‘Door Challenge’ this week and made an emoji themed door display. We discussed what emoji represented each of our personalities and then made mini emojis for display. They look great!

We started our class novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Murpurgo. We have listened to an audio of chapter 1 whilst following the text in our shared books. There has been lots of scope for discussion and one of the first debates we had was about sailing around the world, are you for or against? We came up with our arguments and then presented these to another group using persuasive and emotive language. Everyone thought it was great that they got to argue with one another!! We have also started creating a class collage which is coming along nicely.

Pupil Voice:

Shiv: We did face portraits with Mrs Howley.

Nicola: We did our own animals for our class charter.

Mia Sok.: This was a fun week.

Rachel W: It was a good week.

Isla: At PE with Mrs Roy we went out and played rounders.

Chi-Chi: We made emojis that represent us and put it on our door display.

Amera: I liked PE because we played rounders.

James: I enjoyed the self-portrait task because I usually don’t do that.

Nicholas: I liked drawing the animals.

Leon: This week was fun.

Isabel: An amazing start to the school year.

Rachel Mc: This week was amazing. We were making a boat and sea for display on our class novel.

Louise: We did today’s number of the day and we did it on whiteboards.

Mia St: We got to stick tissue paper to a wave outline for our display.

Have a great weekend everyone, see you next week!!

P7/6

Our technical issue from last week has been resolved!

Here are the photographs from our class trip to the WW2 Linburn war museum.

We learned so much as well as consolidating our learning from this topic.  The alphabet quiz was great…although Mrs Currie had to be disqualified for cheating (I started writing answers in before he had said go…too eager and competitive!).  Freya and Sophia were the overall winners, well done girls! We were able to handle real equipment as well as have a go a feeling how heavy and hard it was to use some of the weaponry from that time!  Can you name the three people in the gas masks?

In school this week we had a visit from the Rights Respecting School Assessors.  Tristan and Aurora represented our class at the meeting and they did a great job.  Well done to the whole school for their efforts and we just cross our fingers that we are officially awarded the level 2 in August.

In maths and numeracy we have been revising and consolidating our knowledge of the topics we have covered.  It has been amazing to see how much we have learned and this gave some of us the valuable opportunity to get additional teaching and practise in areas that we are not fully confident in.  This will continue for the next two weeks.

In RE we have been learning about The Holy Trinty.  As an additional activity, think of three ways to describe the roles you have in life, Mrs Currie is …a sister, a mother and a teacher.  You can post your three descriptions here for an extra dojo!

Have a great weekend.

Lianne – On Tuesday we returned our books to the library and learned some information about how Non-Fiction books are stored in the library using the Dewey system.

Rachael – In maths we have been finalising plans for our Virgin Money Grow your £5 events.

Have a great weekend!

Sporty P7/6

We have had a fabulous week, it has been so active and energetic!  You can see from these photos we had a wide range of activities, these show bootcamp and cricket.

In between our active lessons we did some learning about food hygiene and how microbes can cause food poisoning, we discussed how extreme heat (cooking food) and extreme cold (freezing food) can stop these from multiplying.

We then used our food technology trolley and created some delicious cheesy mash.  This involved us learning how to use the bridge grip to cut the potatoes safely. We all really enjoyed the experience and the taste!

We also learned how Edward Jenner created a vaccine for smallpox by using the cowpox virus…all very interesting if not a little yucky.

Our Star Dinner lesson was great.  We all invited a wide range of interesting people,  Mrs Currie wanted to invited J K Rowling, Jessica invited the youtuber Roman Atwood, Kornelia invited the singer Ariana Grande, Tristan invited footballer Cristiano Ronald and Freya even wanted to invite her cat!  What a super discussion we had about this!

Well done everyone for yet another fantastic health week at St Ninian’s.

P7/6 Flower Power

We have now completed our work on studying flowers, we will continue to watch our long term investigation about the effect of fertilisers (plant food) over the coming weeks.  We have created a wall display to showcase our learning,

Our next focus is going to be linked with healthy minds and bodies.  This will kick start with Health Week next week.  Please remember to wear your sports gear all week and be prepared every day to be outside regardless of the weather! As part of exploring healthy bodies we will be using our Food Technology trolley and creating some delicious meals which will allow us to discuss food hygiene as well as the Eat Well Plate.

In our RE work we will be covering God’s Loving Plan lessons which focus on our developing bodies and relationships.  At the parental conversations this week there was an opportunity to go and view the work we will cover, also the P7 children have received a leaflet today with relevant information (P6 will receive theirs next week).

In Maths we have consolidated our learning about division.  Everyone now seems to be more confident within their own level to tackle these types of calculations.

Homework for the next week will focus on personal reading.  Everyone has been asked to choose a book and to prepare an oral book report to share with the class.

In preparation for next week’s healthy writing, we are going to be asked the question, if you could invite anyone in the world to dinner who would it be and why?  What would you cook for them?

I can’t wait to see who is coming to tea!?

Enjoy the sunshine.

P7/6 News

The children were given the following brief this week and asked to respond via handwritten letter,

A new toy shop is due to open in your local area, called

“Magnificent Toys”

As part of the marketing campaign to encourage people to come to the shop when it opens next week the manager, Thomas Jones, has sent catalogues to every local Primary School; enough for each child.

The catalogue is split into two sections, in the first half all the pages are pink and are filled with dolls and dressing up clothes.  The other half the pages are blue and filled with toy cars and construction.  There is also a picture of the inside of the shop on the front.

In this shop, on the right hand side, all the shelves and labels are pink and there is a big sign saying “Toys For Girls”.  On the left hand side all the shelves and labels are blue and there is a big sign that says “Toys For Boys”.

The children applied their learning from last week’s gender stereotype lessons to create a letter to express their opinion and persuade the manager to rethink his shop’s layout.  Well done to everyone, there was a lot of higher order thinking skills being demonstrated.

In Numeracy we have been focusing on word problems and applying our learning and skills in different contexts.  we have been trying to link these into skills for life.  This will continue into next week.  Some of us were also exploring how to express a remainder, from a division calculation, as a fraction.  This will extend next week into converting the fraction to a decimal.  2D shape has also played a large role in our Maths learning this week, if you would like extra practise try this interactive game.

Our seeds are growing well and we have now started our investigation into seedlings that have been fertilised with liquid plant food versus those have not.  Stay tuned for further updates over the next few weeks.

We were all for THE HIGH JUMP in PE this week.  It was so exciting to watch as everyone took part in a class competition.  Colin was our amazing stand out (jump out!) athlete, jumping 1m 40cm!  Well done Colin!

Have a lovely long weekend.

P7/6 News

This week we have explored different ways to challenge our learning.

1)We took our topic work, about plants, outside and played a game called Seeds and Chaffinches. It helped us to appreciate that not all seeds make it to the stage of germination and that many are eaten by the birds.  Please ask us about the rules to the game because it was great fun and energetic.

2)We had a debate about gender imbalance in careers and also discussed the impact of Toy Manufacturers packaging and labelling of toys and shops.  Watch the following two clips and discuss it at home

3) In RE we have been learning about the life of St Paul and through this we created interactive posters (with flaps and opening sections), here are some examples

4) On our Maths Glass Learning Wall we have been consolidating our knowledge of how to convert from mililitres to litres.
