Haseeb: We learnt how to make paper bags.

Abi: I enjoyed my gymnastics competition because I came second place.

Beth: This week the gymnastic team went to compete, my team came 2nd and I came 1st individual I was so excited.

Aria: I went to a gymnastic competition and we came 2nd and 3rd

And this was our busy week.

Teacher voice:

As you heard from the pupils they have had a really busy week.

Our P7’s went to St Margaret’s Academy for their first transition visit. Dr McAllister led them in a Science lesson where they got their bunsen burner licence, learned how to draw scientific diagrams and worked with a partner to complete a science investigation.

Our P6’s went to the Lanthorn to participate in the P6 Cluster Assembly to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. They sang the hymn ‘Follow Me’ and some of the children read out the prayers they had written for Scotland.

As part of Catholic Education Week we learned about life in India and how families had to make paper bags to sell – 10 bags would earn you 1 rupee. The children worked in teams/families to try to make as many bags as they could in 1o mins (thanks to Mrs Reeves for the demonstration). On average each team/family made 17 bags. We all agreed that this must have been a tough job for the families as they would have to work very long days just to make a basic amount to live on.

There was also great excitement in the class this week as we prepared for the Christmas Fair. Santa’s Grotto looked amazing-well done everyone! A special mention to my ‘little elves’ who helped out last night, they did really well!! They raised £160 on the night!!!!!

We started Scottish Country Dancing this week. Mr McCurdy asked us to assist him in teaching the AM nursery some Scottish Dancing, it was lovely to see the older children helping the younger ones, smiles all around!!

Well done to Aria, Beth and Abi who competed in the gymnastics competition this week – they were fantastic ambassadors for our school and came back buzzing with excitement!

Next week we will begin learning more about our country, ‘Scotland’ as part of our interdisciplinary learning. We will also be changing our class altar to purple to celebrate the beginning of Advent.

I finished the week by attending a mass at St Margaret’s Academy this afternoon which was offered for teachers in West Lothian.

Another great week, the time is flying by!!!

This week we studied financial literacy connected to our Enterprise and numeracy work. Everyone had great fun learning about and creating budgets!! The pupils were not amused when they had to spend their hard earned cash on fixing washing machines and paying bills!!! I was really pleased to read about how they had got on with their budgeting task at home, almost everyone stayed within budget. We also looked at the differences between debit and credit cards.

In writing we explored issues affecting Scotland and then chose one to write a prayer about. Check out Twitter to see some examples.

We began thinking about Catholic Education Week and started by discussing what was good about our school, this then led to a discussion about what was good about a faith school. Again see Twitter for our main discussion points.

Preparation is underway for next week’s Christmas Fair – P6/7 are in charge of organising Santa’s Grotto. We have made advertisement posters and videos with the ipads, made template letters using Microsoft Word, made a Christmas postbox, sorted out  Santa’s gifts and wrote a blog post!! Phew…..

Many of the children have expressed an interest in helping me out next Thursday evening between 5.30-7pm. I will give them a time slot to allow them time to also enjoy the evening with their families. They can wear something Christmassy!!!!

A reminder for P7’s that they are going to St Margaret’s for their first Science lesson bewteen 10-12pm on Monday. They will need a small snack.

Have a great weekend – and remember to stay within budget when shopping on Black Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!

P6/7 Weekly News

Cool to be kind was the theme of the week and this year’s focus was CHOOSE RESPECT!! Here is how we linked it to our lessons:

Wordboost – We used a powerpoint about ‘Cool to be kind’ to select our BOOST words for the week.

Writing – We were inspired by this poem, ‘If’, to think about friendships and what we would want a friend to do for us. Check out our Twitter page to see our X Factor Poetry Plenary.

Art – We had to represent the word ‘Respect’ visually in any way we chose for an upper area display.

Groupwork – We worked in teams to make posters about what we had learned about the ‘Science of Happiness’. We have been trying out some of the suggestions.

RE – We researched Saints who were great examples of showing kindness and respect to others.

Assembly – The House and Vice Captains from our class were involved in planning, preparing and delivering an assembly about this week’s theme. They did a great job and had a captive audience!

Pupil Voice:

Brooke – I liked doing the poem of friendship as I liked trying to use rhyming words.

Harley  – I liked adding and subtracting decimals this week.

Ambra – We did a friendship poem I liked it but it was challenging.

Finally, I received an email this evening to inform me that Bea and Toni have made it into the top 20 in the West Lothian Name a Gritter competition. I have put details of how to vote for them on the school app and I have also emailed everyone in our class. All the teachers have been posting their votes too for them!!! Good luck girls!!!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

P6 Learning Week

We have had a really good week this week in Primary 6. We had our very first visit of the year to the Lanthorn Library, we chose a personal reading book.  This week our reading focus has been reading for enjoyment so it was perfect timing.

We have continued focussing on subtraction and addition in numeracy and have been making really good progress. Today we evaluated our learning and Evaluated our work to provide a rule for completing column sums. We used our assessment is for learning skills to create a three step strategy to solve column sums. Some children were desperate to use their rules and apply them to challenging 9 digit addition sums. Well done, Mrs McMullen was very impressed at the positive mindsets shown by all of P6 towards maths.

We have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and about the 100 year anniversary. Today we created our own poppy pictures on top of the poem, Flanders Field. (Pictures to follow next week)

We we have been exploring OneNote and will continue to do more next week. We have sent lots of emails to Mrs McMullen. 😁

Have a lovely weekend 😁

P6/7 weekly news

We have had such a busy week that we ran out of time to type up our blog so Mrs Roy stepped in to help us out.

Monday

We started the week with spelling and wordboost before having our morning PE lesson. Fitness is the theme and we all worked in teams to play fitness bingo. The P7 girls were the winners! In numbertalks we were working on the doubling and near doubles strategy for addition. During shared reading Mrs Roy introduced us to ‘Inspector Heurisko’s lights’, the story told us about skills we need when reading. Mrs Purdie came into our class this afternoon and was helping us to order decimals using post it notes.

Tuesday

We were learning about abstract nouns in grammar today, we all did well with the task. In the afternoon we went to the lanthorn library to choose new reading for enjoyment books.

Wednesday

Mr McCurdy continued working with us on fitness using a Halloween theme. We nailed the monster mash as our warm up!! In enterprise we worked in pairs using our devices and netbooks to research 5 local businesses. We then created factfiles for out display, we could use Microsoft word or a poster. Mrs Scott is joining us now in class on Wednesday afternoons to help us with our reading.

Thursday

We learned about the feast of All Saints and led the liturgy at our whole school mass in the Lanthorn. Mrs Roy was very proud of us all as we led by example. In writing we used a picture as a stimulus. We then had to think of descriptive words or phrases to describe what we saw. Everyone wrote an extended piece of writing and some peoplr shared their story with us.

Friday

Everyone went to their committee, have a look on Twitter to see what we got up to. We also updated our GLOW Profiles using OneNote. Please ask us about these at home and we can show you what we have done so far.
