P5 Homework recap

Hi there,

As we have not had our homework diaries home this week some children have asked if I could blog the criteria for our presentation homework due on Tuesday 24th.  Please see below.

IDL and Maths – To be prepared for week beginning Tuesday 24th May

Research a food product or company and create a presentation about it.  Your presentation can include a powerpoint to support it or props etc.  You should aim to speak for 4 minutes.

Some ideas for your presentation,

  • What is the logo and/or slogan for the product?
  • What is the history of the product (what it looked like years ago)?
  • Include sales figures or numerical facts and any relevant graphs or charts.
  • What does the future hold for your chosen product.

I will score your presentation out of ten using the following criteria,

3 points – preparation of presentation (notes/props/powerpoint/content)

3 points – confidence of your voice and how clearly you speak

3 points – eye contact with audience

1 point – your talk lasts between 3 and 5 minutes.

Hope this helps.

P5 (a-day)

This week in our Food Glorious Food topic we have been looking at the benefits of fruit and vegetables and why it is so important to establish healthy eating habits in young children.  It astonished us when we learned that 56% of children at Primary schools in Scotland do not eat enough fruit or vegetables in a day and this rises to 80% for Secondary aged pupils.  This led us to write a mock letter to West Lothian Council explaining that we think it would be a good idea for all P1 and 2 children to be given a piece of fruit to eat during their milk time.  In our letter we expressed our opinions and backed it up with some facts that we learned.  The were some excellent examples of fact and persuasion on show, perhaps there are future politicians among us or even a future First Minister!

In maths we have started a new method of developing our mental maths strategies.  It is called “Numbertalks”.  For this we have been focusing on strategies for doubling and halving a 3-digit number as well as X10 and /10.  During these lessons we do not put our hands up instead we hold our closed fist against our chest and raise our thumb if we have worked out the answer.  We can show how many different maths strategies we can use to get the answer by straightening our fingers.

Next week is our school Health Week and everyone has a letter home with them today explaining that they have to come to school dressed in sports wear for the week, be prepared in be indoors and outdoors.  I cannot wait, this is my most favourite week in the school calendar!!  My trainers have been washed and my leg warmers are looked out…

Loads of photos to come next week!

Make sure you are well rested over the weekend ready for our week of activity next week.

P5 Blog

Work on our new wall display about our “Food Glorious Food” topic is well underway.  We have decided our “Ninian’s Nutritious Num Nums” will cost 50p and we have created our own posters to advertise this product.  We have been creating catchy slogans to help sell this product, some examples are

“The flavours are tropically explosive!” (Krzysztof)

“Have a short break, have a num num!” (Edwin)

“So milky, forget about the UDDERS!” (Reece)

In maths we have been revising our written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We had to make sure that we lined up our place values correctly when we were writing our vertical calculations.

We are also listening to the story of “The Magician’s Nephew” which is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia.  We are at the exciting moment when the characters Polly and Digory are about to visit Narnia for the first time!!!!!

To link with our Health topic we are learning the body parts in spanish, this is the youtube video clip we are currently watching to help us,

Hasta la vista.

Primary 5/6 News

In PE this week our class has been learning about shot putt, we now know how stand properly , twisting our hips, getting power from our legs and how to throw properly.

As part of our healthy eating topic we researched how to read nutritional labels on the back of packaging and did a survey to find out how much fruit and veg our class eats. We will do this survey again at the end of our topic to see if this improves. We have also been designing different packaging for our Eatwell Plate display. We had an interesting discussion and debate on Monday when we had to put different food and drinks into unhealthy or healthy categories, providing a reason for our choice. Here are some pictures of the survey we did…

Using our knowledge of why we should all eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, how to write a letter and  learning how to use persuasive techniques we all created persuasive letters trying to convince people to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

We continued to practice multiplying 4 digits by 1 digit in maths. We also started our circles topic this week. We know the different parts of a circle, the circumference, radius and the diameter. We learned how to find the center point of a circle, calculate the radius and diameter and also the circumference using pi- 3.14. We will be continuing our circles topic next week.

Have a lovely weekend

P5 Digesting The Facts

This week we focused on learning about the digestive system of the human body.  We learned about the functions of the body’s organs involved in the process and how food travels through each section.  We then turned this information into a written report using diagrams as well as writing.

In maths we revised our understanding of finding a fraction of an amount, for example 1/5 of 25, and then extended this into finding  2/5s of 25 and so on.

We also looked at finding factors of numbers.  As an extra challenge find out what special name we give to a number greater than 1 that can only be divided equally by 1 and itself, post your answer for a dojo! 🙂

On both Tuesday and Wednesday the children worked with Mrs Thomson to produce some very colourful and creative sun designs, once you have looked at these you know summer is nearly here!  Where are my shades?!

Now the weather is improving hopefully more of our PE lessons will be outdoors, on overcast days you might want to bring warmer PE kit.  Our next step in PE is to use our sprint starts that we learned in the hall outside where we can run a full sprint distance!  Looking forward to it…I will definitely need to remember my trainers!

Have a lovely weekend.

Summer Fair

summer-fair-web-poster

Our Summer Fair is on Saturday 7th May 10am till 12noon. Pupils were issued a leaflet in school bags this week.

The event needs a large number of volunteers to man the stalls and we really struggle to get people to help. May be you could help for 1 hour or may be 2 hours? Volunteers can be parents, carers, grandparents, aunties/uncles – all family members are welcome to lend a hand. Get in touch via facebook or leave your contact details at the office – WE NEED YOU!

P5 data champions

Another busy week!  Last week we gathered data from around the school to see which fruit children liked best in each class (this will be useful information for the Friday Healthy Tuck Trolley).  We used the technique of tally marks to record the data and then we created a frequency table.  Once we had this data organised we turned it into a bar graph using our learning from last week of what makes a “good” bar graph.  Here are our completed graphs,

In our writing this week we recapped our knowledge of writing a science report and we completed another investigation where we heated up a salt water solution.  we watched as the water evaporated and left the salt behind.  We now know we can describe creating a salt solution as a reversible change.  We used the following interactive resource in class to show this and Kieran asked if I could blog it so you can try it out at home.  Enjoy.

This week we also participated in a basketball festival.  Many thanks to Mrs Stewart, Mrs Rafferty and Mrs Mortimer who gave up their time to come along and help out.  The children all had a great time.

Next week is our final week of the term, please remember we finish on Thursday!  There will only be reading homework next week 🙂
