Primary 5R Weekly News

Another busy week in P5R:

As part of our Science topic this week we took part in some science experiments. We were learning about using different processes to separate mixtures of materials. This is what we did:

  1. We mixed salt and water together and then we had to wait for the water to evaporate to see the salt crystals appear.
  2. We mixed rice and paper clips and we used a magnet to pick up and separate the paper clips.
  3. We mixed sand with water and for this we used a funnel and used a filtration process to separate the sand from the water.
  4. We mixed raisins and flour and then we used a sieve to separate the raisins from the flour.

In P.E. we played tennis and we also played Jailbreak and Boil the Kettle.

For Word Boost we made up sentences using our Boost words.

We practised our new spellings.

We wrote a story about a girl called Francis who disappeared into the darkness.

We had a special assembly for  ‘Wee John the Janny’ who is retiring today and we all gave him a card with our special messages and pictures.

It was European Day of Languages this week and we took part in a quiz to see where in Europe all the different languages are spoken.

Congratulations to Sophie for being awarded the Praise Postcard this week!

P5D Weekly News!

P5D weekly update!

Welcome to P5D’s weekly news! We have had a busy week learning new things and celebrating with our St.Ninian’s family.

We learned about rounding numbers to give estimated answers to calculations in maths and have been working out how to read different scales.

‘It was hard to read different scales in the beginning but I still enjoyed it.’ – Aaron

In art this week, we used line to create landscapes of a setting in our novel, Mudge Park.

‘I liked using line to add colour to my landscape.’ – Kasia

We have started our science topic about materials and have been focussing on separating materials. We received a message from a local supermarket to tell us that their products had spilled in the back of the delivery truck and were all mixed up! We had to work out the best methods to use to separate flour from raisins, salt from water, paperclips from rice and sand from water! We learned about filtration, sieving, evaporation and magnetic attraction.

‘It was really fun!’ – Emily

‘It was interesting.’ – Kasia

‘I liked the using the magnets.’ – Rhia

Now that we have completed our class novel, we wrote letters to Mr Mudge telling him all about or adventures and to thank him for his help. We used informal language and focussed on using paragraphs.

‘It was very interesting because we wrote our own letter.’ – Michelle

‘It was fun writing the letter because I like writing!’ – Morgan

Finally we had an assembly to celebrate Wee John the Janny’s retirement.

‘It was sad but it was fun as well!’ – Levente

‘It was emotional but we will still remember him!’ – Emily

‘He was always really nice to us.’ – Michelle

‘He is very funny and makes me laugh when he dresses up!’ – Sophie R

Congratulations to Sophie D on being awarded our praise postcard this week.

Primary 5R Weekly News

It has been another fantastic week in Primary 5R!

This week has been Maths week and we have all been learning that it is okay to make a mistake because we can learn a lot from a mistake if you believe in yourself. When you make a mistake, synapses in your brain fire and make new pathways in your brain.  We also discovered that speed is not important when trying to calculate an answer as it is more important that you understand how to use your different strategies to work things out.

We  were all shown an image of 6 dots for just a few seconds and then we described exactly how we could remember the sequence of dots. We noticed that many of us saw the dots in our own unique way.

We also learnt about the Hailstone Sequences which follow these rules:

If a number is even, divide it by 2

If a number is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1.

A mathematician called Lothar Collatz proposed that for any number you pick, if you follow the procedure enough times you will eventually get to 1. We all enjoyed trying to test this out using different numbers.

We have been learning that a polygon is a shape with many sides, usually more than 4. We have found out the names of some regular polygons:

A quadrilateral has 4 sides and 4 angles , a pentagon has 5 sides and 5 angles, a hexagon has 6 sides and 6 angles, a heptagon has 7 sides and 7 angles,an octagon has 8 sides and 8 angles, a nonagon has 9 sides and 9 angles  and a decagon has 10 sides and 10 angles.

In Art we used 2D shapes to make pictures of faces, people and animals.

In R.E. we designed DVD covers for a 21st Century Saviour and we discussed how he/she could help us.

In Writing we have been thinking about creating a setting and we all described a house and garden made entirely of sweets.

We have also been revising our spelling of numbers this week.

In P.E. we played Bean Bag tennis and Jailbreak.

Have a great long weekend!

P5D Weekly Blog

Welcome to our P5D blog post. This has been a really good week.

We have been learning about how to log in to Glow using our own login details and exploring the site and the available features. We enjoyed using Microsoft word online and accessing it through our one drive!

“It has been really interesting and fun to learn about Glow and I managed to login and write on word at home!” – Ola

As it has been maths week, in art we made portraits using numbers only. This meant we had to be VERY creative.  We also made pattern pictures using shape and colour This was trickier than you would expect.

“It was really fun to make the portraits out of numbers!” – Kasia

To help with our number knowledge we have been doing daily number talks, number of the week and the countdown challenge where we have to use the four processes to try and reach the target number.

“I enjoyed doing the number of the week because it was challenging!” – Emily

We have been creating and interpreting different graphs and know that not all graphs contain numbers.

In writing, we pretended to be the main character in our class novel, Jack, and wrote informal letters to his mum to tell her  what we had been up to and how we planned to help her escape from prison.

“What I really liked about writing a letter to Jack’s mum was that we could pretend we were someone else and got to pretend we jumped into Jack’s body!” – Zuzanna

In PE, we have been developing our dribbling skills in hockey. We started a small class tournament and can be rewarded points for winning and good sportsmanship!

“I enjoy hockey and shaking hands with other teams to be a good sportsman.” – Ethan

We have been learning about fiction and non-fiction texts and developed our comprehension skills using a short extract about Ed Sheeran and his musical talent.

“I liked learning about Ed Sheeran and the songs he sings.” – Michelle

“I didn’t know that he wrote his own songs!” – Kasia

“I learned that he wrote a song for Justin Bieber once!” – Calvin

Congratulations to Kasia this week for being awarded our praise postcard for always giving 100% in everything she does!

Have a great long weekend,

September GIRFEC theme – SAFE

Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC)

GiRFEC is the national approach in Scotland to improving outcomes and supporting the wellbeing of our children. To help make sure everyone – children, young people, parents, and the services that support them – has a common understanding of what wellbeing means, we describe it in terms of eight indicators. (see wheel)

Each month we focus on one of the indicators in class and at assembly. This month we will focus on SAFE.

In school some of the activities we will do the develop this theme are:

  • House Captain assemblies to look at being safe in school
  • Fire alarm drills to make sure children know what to do in the event of a fire
  • Every child will identify 5 key adults they can talk to – at school or at home

Working together at home is a really valuable part of this topic. Below are some ideas for family learning around this theme. We would love you to share how you get on!

  • Repeat a road safety routine whenever you are out and about.
  • Introduce your child to people who help us in the community.
  • Discuss how to make an emergency call and the dangers of doing this when there is no real emergency.
  • Make a list of people and their phone numbers your child could contact in an emergency and display it in your house.
  • Discuss the best way to react/respond to this situation with your child – a stranger makes contact with your child online and asks for their personal details. What should they do?

Primary 5D Our awesome learning blog!

It’s been  a very busy week for Primary 5D and they  would love to share their learning with you.

Kasia: In Maths we did 5 and 6 digit numbers and even stretched ourselves with 8 digit numbers.

Andrew: Maths was fun, we rolled  a dice and if we got a number we wrote it down and made a bigger number by adding on digits. This helped us with our place value.

Ola: In PE we have been learning all about hockey. We had 4 teams and we played matches against each other. The yellow and blue teams were the winners. We all like PE as we get lots of exercise and Mr Mc Curdy makes it lots of fun. Aaron agrees!!

Angel: This was our first week in P5 to do story writing. We got to create a character and use lots of  adjectives  to describe our characters. Mine was Annabelle, she is helpful and generous.

You would love to read all about our characters and see how creative we are!! We think we will have movie directors from our class in the future because they were so good!!

Emily: In RE with Mrs Howley we designed Friendship posters in groups. We thanked God for all our friends and family.

Michelle: We are really liking our class novel. Junkyard Jack and the Horse that Talked. We have done lots of emotion work using our novel. This helped us to look at emotions and behaviours.

Hasan: With our novel we even got to make videos to predict what we think will happen in the next chapter.

We are looking forward to next week to see where our learning takes us. Have a great weekend everyone.
