Mrs Docherty: Early Years Writing Support Day 2 7.5.20

Following on from yesterday’s support we will continue with how to support your child with writing in the early years. There are many processes taking place when your child is writing from thinking of ideas, getting the vocabulary and grammar and the transferring it onto paper, never mind the handwriting aspect too. Through this whole process your child is able to share what they have learned and what they know.

For today we will look at a few more ideas to help you to support your child with how to develop their writing skills and foster a love of writing.

  1. Help them to get started

Children can often find it difficult to get started and a blank page may be overwhelming for them. This is where you can help. You could give them the first few sentences or even words to help formulate ideas and thoughts for their writing. A good way to do this is to start with a question and then create a mind map or create a bank of words form their answer to the question. This could be: What did you see on your walk today? Who is the character in your story? Where is your story taking place?  Allow your child to then free write using their thoughts.

  1. Connect their interests

Think about your child’s interests. What is their favourite story, who is their favourite character, what is their favourite activity or toy? Whatever their interests are connect them to their writing.

  1. Create Story Prompts

A fun way to do this is to cut out pictures from magazines with characters and settings on them. I have included a link for the story We’re going on a Bear Hunt with visuals for setting and characters  that could support your child to write the story and sequence it.

These are a few more ideas to help you when supporting your child with writing and we will conclude with our final ideas on Tuesday. As always please get in touch if you have any questions or would like more ideas/resources for writing

Take care everyone,

Mrs Docherty

Welcome back after the long weekend!

Welcome back after a few days off!

I hope you have all had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend at home with your families. I enjoyed going for walks and doing some planting in my garden. I even met some St Ninian’s families whilst I was out walking, it was so good to chat and hear how you were getting on.

Last week our teachers were contacting families via phonecall and they were all so pleased to get this opportunity for a quick chat and update on how you were all getting on. If they couldn’t get you they left a message or we sent a groupcall just to check in and to offer our support. Please contact myself or Mrs Smith if there is anything we can support you with via email or at St Ninian’s on a Monday when we are working in the HUB school.

This is a short week of learning for you and your teachers will post your learning grids online. Last week I sent out lots of virtual Golden Tickets and I am looking forward to seeing who the teachers will nominate this week.

As May is the month of Mary, Fr Kenneth has kindly recorded a video message for the schools of the Livingston & East Calder Parishes. It would be lovely if you could dedicate some time to this during your week for prayer and reflection, https://youtu.be/bK4Vnz46ldI

West Lothian are releasing challenges every Monday named ‘INspired’, these are challenges designed to challenge your skills, knowledge and understanding. It would be great if some of our children and families could give these a go. You can access the challenges via the blog https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/wl/stayinspired/ or via Twitter @StayINspiredWL.

As a staff team we are always keen to gather your views so with this mind we have prepared a short survey about the continuation of learning during this school closure which we would appreciate you taking the time to complete. It can be accessed with this link and we have also sent it out via groupcall https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeuBppqbcNrLJgsDJUrQoNQVhmpOqtObtFXaczyMQaxXrPDCg/viewform?usp=sf_link

Have a great week and stay safe!

Mrs Docherty: Early Years Writing Support Day 1 6.5.20

This week we will focus on another key area of Literacy which will be writing.  Throughout the week we will look at fun ways for you to support your child with writing which will build upon all of the previous advice on our other literacy skills: reading and spelling.

Writing is a great way for your child to communicate. We will focus on ways you can make writing exciting from fun activities to daily reading and writing sessions. This will help you to continue to build your child’s skills through our distant learning.  Here are some writing tips for home.

  1. Reading

One of the first ways to support writing is through reading. Reading helps to increase your child’s vocabulary and this in turn supports your child in using these words in their writing. Try reading together every day with your younger children.

  1. Materials

Try different materials, fun pens and pretty paper can be motivational.

  1. Space

Just like your reading space create a quiet space for writing and provide some stimulus: this could be a story you have read, a favourite toy, or an experience you have had ex your walk in the woods.

  1. Purpose

You could encourage your child to write for a variety of purposes such as a shopping list, a menu for your evening meal, or even send a letter to someone.

  1. Technology

Technology can be used to support writing. Get  your child to send an email or produce a story using word.

I have added a few resources to help stimulate writing through games below. You could create a pirate or fairy adventure or even create your own monster and describe it!! Have fun.

P3 Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan Friday 1.5.20

Good morning P3!  I hope that you have had a good week and that you have enjoyed our learning activities.  Thank you for working so hard this week.  It was lovely to speak to so many of you and your families this week.

Today is the first day of the month of May.  Do you remember how to say May in Spanish?  Our months of the year song might help you. As today is Friday our focus is to reflect on our learning this week.

Reviewing Our Learning

In order to gain your exit pass and begin the weekend, have a think about your progress.  If you wish, you can record your thoughts in your jotter or on your OneNote profile.  Remember that you can make a voice recording on your profile!

Think about these questions and talk with a family member:

The most important thing I learned this week was…

The most difficult thing we did this week was…

How could you use what you have learned in the future?

What do you think we need to learn more of?

Literacy

Use a pink and green pencil, pen or crayon to self assess your writing.  Our success criteria was:

  • remember to include a title
  • include 3 facts about your plant or animal
  • describe what your plant or animal looks like
  • use  nouns and adjectives
  • remember to use capital letters and full stops.

Maths

This week we have been learning about 3D shape and tiling.  How confident do you feel about your learning?  Draw a traffic light to show how successful you have been.

Have a lovely long weekend and look out for our next blog post on Wednesday.

From Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan

P3 Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan Thursday 30.4.20

Good Morning Primary 3,

It was so lovely to speak to some of you and your families yesterday. You have all been working very hard. I am so proud at how well you managing with your home learning.

I hope you are all enjoying your tasks this week. How are you getting on with finding some examples of tiling? Maybe you could share some of them with us on the blog post or on your online profile.

Here are some additional tasks for you to try this week. Remember these are optional and you do not have to complete these. Make sure you are taking plenty of breaks and not having too much screen time.

Maths

You have been learning about tiling this week. You can make some beautiful tiling patterns. Can you create a card for someone to make them smile with a tiling pattern on the front? You could colour in the pattern using all the colours of the rainbow. This could be for someone at home, a neighbour or someone in your close family or friends.  Here are some examples of a tiling pattern.

Literacy

There is a Sumdog Spelling Challenge for you to complete.  It will help you to learn your weekly spelling pattern.

I have written some sentences about my weekend however I was very sleepy when doing them and I think I have made a few mistakes. Can you rewrite my sentences and correct my mistakes?

Have a great day P3.  Remember to take breaks and spend some time outside if you can.

NHS Speech and Language Advice 29.4.20

Following on from Monday’s Speech and Language advice I have included ideas on how to support your child with speech sounds. This was shared on the NHS Lothians Speech and Language Therapy on Facebook.

https://en-gb.facebook.com/NHSLothianSLT/

Please see below ideas and  suggestions from NHS Lothians for you to use with your child to help support them with their speech sounds:

  • Hide objects or pictures in a sensory box (a box filled with feathers, leaves, popcorn kernels, ripped up paper etc) – every time your child finds an object/picture they should practise saying the word.
  • Use any fun turn-taking game – every time your child takes a turn they should practise a word.
  • Take turns naming a picture and then posting the picture into the box
  • Take turns to throw a bean bag/ball into a box, choose a picture/object from the box and practise the word.
  • For all these activities you can use objects around the house or cut out pictures from magazines/newspapers etc, that begin with the sound your child finds difficult.

Please use the comments box if you have tried any of these ideas and let us know how you got on.

Have a great day everyone,

Mrs Docherty

P3 Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan Wednesday 29.4.20

Good morning P3!  Happy Wednesday.  I hope that you’re having a great week and enjoying our learning activities.

Core Learning Grid

Are you all managing to access the grid?    Let us know if there are any problems.

Core Grid Week 4 P3 PDF

How are you getting on with our Global Goals task – investigating Goal No.15 (Life on Land)?  I went on a woodland walk for  my daily exercise yesterday and saw flowers, birds, leaves and even a family of ducklings! Perhaps you could make a list of what you see.

Here are some additional activities for you if you wish to try them .  Remember, only do what you can, and remember to take plenty of breaks and get outside if you can.   You’re doing a great job!

Maths

This week we have set up a new shape challenge on Sumdog. You might like to listen to this song  to remind you of our learning on shapes.

Literacy

Today’s extra literacy task is a reading task.  Choose a book to read – it may be a book that you have in your house, perhaps from your Read, Write, Count book bag,  or you may want to choose a book online (Oxford Owl or World Book Day websites have lots of great choices).  Once you have read your book, choose a character to draw and give them a speech bubble.  What would your character say?

Have a great day and remember to let us know how you are getting on. We love to hear from you and to see all of your fantastic work!

National Superhero Day

Good afternoon St Ninian’s Primary School! I hope everyone is doing well and keeping active by exercising!

Today is National Superhero Day! Here are some things I’d like you to think about;

Who is your favourite super hero and what makes them so great? Mine has to be spider man! I love the way he moves from building to building!

Can you think of what super power you would love to have and why? Mine would definitely be super speed, I think that would help me a lot when I am playing rugby!

Finally, the most important one, what super power do you already have? It is important just now for everyone to stay positive and I would like every single one of you to celebrate yourselves! Are you super smart? Are you super kind or caring? Are you super funny? Have a think and if you’re stuck, ask someone around you!

All the best,

Mr Cumming.

P3 Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan’s Daily Update 28.4.20

Good morning boys and girls. It is Mrs Docherty this morning online for you all. I hope you are all getting on well and I can see all of the amazing learning experiences your teachers have been putting on for you.

You have a great week’s work on your grid all of which I have included above, so I am just going to provide a few extra activities for you if you need them. Remember only to do what you can.  You are doing great.

Spelling

What I would like you to do today is to take your spelling words and add on suffixes. Remember these go at the end of your spelling word or root word. Every week in spelling with Mrs Docherty we look at ways of adding on endings: ing, ed, s, es.

Can you add on an ending for all of your spelling words and remember to look out for those short vowels in case we need to double the last letter! You can post this on your One Note profile.

Maths:

Test someone in your family: Can you write a description for a shape you have been learning by talking about the properties of your shape but don’t tell them the name. See if they can guess your shape.

ART:

Can you draw a castle using lines that travel in different directions for example horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Use 2d shapes as corners and curves and to create turrets and windows etc.

Have a great day everyone,

Mrs Docherty
