This week has been a busy and super technologies week.

“Technologies week is the best week ever” said Mark.

“It has been really fun and awesome.” said Brooke

“It has been really really exciting.” said Ailie

On Wednesday we enjoyed our trip to West Lothian College to visit the Engineering and Science department. During this trip we had a tour of the workshop. We got to see lots of different people working to build walls, stairs, and really cool machines to cut metal.

“I liked seeing all the big machines” said EvieIMG_0322[1]

Finally we got to have a peek at the electricians hard at work. “My favourite was the electricians.” said Caiden. After our grand tour we had a chance to build our own machines.

“My team built an alarm with a horn and lights. This was tricky to build but we got in the end.” said Hannah.

“I built the siren it was really complicated even for the people helping but we got it in the end. It was fun!” said Aoife

“I built a car. It was kind of tricky because the wires were hard to put in the tiny holes.” said Adrin

Thank you WesIMG_0373[1]t Lothian College for a great trip.

Yesterday we had a visitor from Scotch Beef. During this visit we had a look at the different symbols for meat and what they mean.

“The symbols meant the animals never went out of Scotland.” said Mark

“This also meant that the animals have had a very happy life.” Said Gaby

The lady was teaching us all about the vitimans that meat can give you and how this helps your body.

“The meat can give strength, helps your blood cells, it can help with your bones and it can heal your cuts and give you extra energy.” said Jan

“We had a chance to make beef faijtas. They tasted like beef and vegetable. I didn’t really but I gave it a try.” said Joesph

“The faijtas tasted like heaven!” said Rachel

Sair fingers all round in primary 3!

We are still working hard on our Scotland topic. At the start of the week we listened to the poem ‘The sair finger’. We practiced saying it to each other in our groups. We all found this poem so funny, it must be the Scots language! We love hearing all the funny words!

At the end of the week we had Miss Smyth and she continued with our Scotland topic and we looked at the life and times of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We watched a wee video clip and then started to create our very own Rennie Mackintosh inspired artwork. We were very impressed with ourselves as we learned that he liked to draw using geometric shapes. So far they are looking fabulous. We’ll share them with you when we finish .

Next week we are very excited as we have some of the teachers in our school coming in to work with us, they are in for an absolute treat, as it’s technology week as well! We have a trip to West Lothian College to their engineering department! We’ll keep you posted on how our trip goes! 😃

Have a great weekend!

Primary 3/4 News

This week has been a fabulous week.

This week we have started our new topic ‘A Wee Book of Fairy Tales in Scots.’

“The first story we read was the Three Wee Pigs.” Said Aidan

“This story was not the same because the words were different.” said Ailie

“It was in Scottish slang.” said Rachel.

“The book is really fun to read.” Said Evie

In drama we were leaning the skill of hotseating. Ailie was the Big Bad Wolf and the rest of the class were the news reporters. We had some interesting questions to ask the wolf about his terrible crime.

Then for art we went a hunt around our garden to find different things objects, shapes and textures to inspire our Big Bad Wolf picture. Take a look at some of our pictures.

Reading: reflective reading about the life of Robert Burns and enjoying extracting facts about his life from a passage

Writing: we wrote about our school show, what we liked, how we felt and what other people said about it,

Art: designing our own tartans, drawing Robert Burns step by step and using an online tutorial on how to draw a rose

Outdoor Learning: Mr Hunter took us outside again and we were intrigued to learn what a fank is! If you don’t know, ask the children!

National Youth Choir of Scotland: this session was fun and we even used a huge parachute while singing at the same time!

Maths: sequencing to 1000 and partitioning 3 and 4 digit numbers

Hope you enjoy the photos,

A Fun Week in P3!

Fun activities have featured in class this week! We have been devoting lots of time to our Burns’ Night show practices and the excitement has been building as the big day approaches. We have had 2 dress rehearsals this week, one for the 3 classes involved and today we performed for the whole school. No stage fright at all as we have become such confident performers! Here’s to next week, you will be in for a treat!

In Maths we have continued practising our counting beyond 100 up to 1000. We have played smartboard games and we had fun using an online flip-counter which helped us. Here is the link:

http://www.ictgames.com/flipCounter/index.html

We also had fun dancing to a 5 times table song. We enjoyed the activity as it helped us to learn this table through singing and dancing. We all have our own personal tables challenge sheets now, and Mrs Howley will only give us a times tables sticker if we can recite our tables fluently as well as correctly!

In Spelling we were learning nk and ng ending words. Fun activities included spelling using whiteboards, making spelling word pyramids and bending pipecleaners into letters to spell our words, as well as take photos of them using our class iPad!

In writing we had an exciting, fun time when a huge bag of tartan materials, clan badges and a shoebox filled with tartan ties all arrived in class! This generous donation came from Alexander’s gran who has a kilt shop. Everybody in class got their own piece of tartan and we had to describe it, including colours, shapes, materials and designs. After writing down our ideas on whiteboards, we wrote on our writing templates and these will become a new wall display in class. It was great fun having real materials to touch and see, especially as they were then going to be used for the school show. How lucky are we?

We rounded off the week with our first Skills Academy classes. These included Spanish games and songs, First Aid, Hungry for Success, Animal Care, Team Building challenges, Messy Play and Creation Station. Hope you like a few of our photos from this week. Have a fun weekend,

P3’s super week!

After our first 5 day week back, we can see that our show rehearsals are starting to come together very nicely. Please keep practising our class song, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, and keep practising lines at home too!

In Maths we have been counting up in 2s and 3s, 4s and 5s and recognising missing number patterns. We found different ways to help us with our counting, including using cubes and drawing tally marks. We have also been revising our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We have our own tables challenge sheets and when we know each table very well, we can sign it ourselves, bring it back to be tested and receive a time stable sticker from Mrs Howley. In Spelling we have been revising word patterns covered last term and we even chose our own challenging words from our reading books to write sentences with.

We have been busy with pupil planning and linking the learning for our new topic, Scotland. We have our own pupil planning wall which shows what we already know and what we would like to learn more about.  This means we are helping our teacher to plan exciting lessons for us!

We have been learning all about the life of Robert Burns. This has been a popular choice for interdisciplinary learning, as this is the focus for our Burns’ Supper show. This week our writing was all about the life of Robert Burns and we really enjoyed remembering the facts and writing them in sentences. We also enjoyed reading the song words for our Red Red Rose song, looking for rhyming words and repetitions of phrases.

In PE we have been enjoying gymnastics and learning basic floor skills on mats before we progress to the apparatus!  In Music, Mrs Steele revised our Burns’ Night songs which she has been teaching us.

We also got a surprise visit from baby Holly from the Roots of Empathy session. We were able to see lots of differences in her since her last visit. Holly was able to sit up on her own and she enjoyed  listening to us singing our class song to her!

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Primary 3/4 News

This week we had a chance to make our very own Scottish dinner. We had time to think about the Scottish meaning for this.

Mark said “This is called haggis, neeps and tatties.

Jay-p said “I loved the tatties”

Gaby said “It was really good”

Aidan “You had to put holes in the neep to make it cook it better.”

Shannon said “I liked the haggis and I liked the tattie. I didn’t really like the neep.”

Adrin said “It was delicious!”

Lukasz said “I loved the haggis! I didn’t like the neeps and tatties.”

Nasim said “It was so delicious”

We have been impressed with our show rehearsal and we can’t believe that it’s only 1 week until we perform for the whole school.

Mark said “There will be lots of surprises for everyone.”

Jacob said “Our show is getting great. I am finding it funny when the Redcoats shoot the cannon at the Jacobite’s.”

Rachel said “I find it funny when there is a joke about Irn Bru” However you will have to wait and see what we are talking about.”

Have a lovely weekend!

We enjoyed getting together with the other classes and we have been practising our lines and our songs for the show. 2 weeks to go and we are buzzing with excitement!

We are very grateful for your help with costumes for us, and supporting us with learning our lines. No photos for this week, as we will keep them until after the performance!
