Awesome Primary 3

Another fabulous week in Awesome Primary 3.  We have been so busy this week and have been learning lots of different things.

This week we learned all about Forces.

Katie learned that a Force moves something.  Emily added that it can twist something.  Ola and Sophie YM also remembered that it can push or pull something to move it too.  At the Funfair, forces make the rides operate and move.

I was very delighted to see everyone so eager to learn all about the scientific workings of the Funfair.  Totally awesome!

This week in Maths we have been extending our knowledge of Place Value.  A big thumbs up from everyone to show that they understand this much better now.

On Monday I will stick the Sumdog passwords into the diaries and the children can explore this at home.  It’s a fabulous website to help extend understanding of the maths topics.

Art

In Art this week the children were creating pictures of Funfair Tents using paints.

Jack really enjoyed this activity and learned to use the paint brush with better control.  Sophie R liked using the lovely bright colours.

This week in writing we created our own job adverts to advertise jobs for the Funfair.  Cameron really liked learning about the different jobs.

Have a wonderful weekend from Awesome Primary 3 and Mrs McMullen.  Looking forward to next week 🙂

P2/3 Weekly News

Another fantastic week for Primary 2/3.    Our highlights included celebrating European Day of Languages and making flags from other countries.

In maths, we’ve been improving our addition skills.  Our favourite activities included playing matching games and using apps on the iPads to consolidate our learning.

In health and well-being we did our Smart Start to Cosmic Kids .  Click the link if you would like to try it at home – we all had great fun.

Our Planet Earth, Sun and Moon topic involved lots of learning about the weather this week.  We found out how rain is created and annotated diagrams showing the water cycle.

This led us to learning phrases for different types of weather in Spanish and we’re looking forward to making Spanish weather wheels next week.   One of our favourite Spanish games is on the BBC website – you can try it at home.  Linked to our topic, we’re loving listening to the story of Plop, the Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

Primary 2/3 fitness is improving every day and everyone is going further and faster each week.  We find that it really helps us to concentrate on our learning.

European Day of Languages

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDovNibBLd0

On Monday it was the European day of Languages and to mark the occasion many classes took part in some language-based activities. Here are a few examples:

In Primary one they practised morning greetings in French, Spanish, Polish, Italian and English. Then Dawid and Klaudia taught the class how to count to ten in Polish. They also took part in a Spanish fitness song.

Primary three learnt to sing a Spanish song and Primary five tried to match different words for Hello to the right language. They also took part in a language carousel.

Try practising a few of the different languages using the link above!

Awesome P3

Another busy week for P3. On European Languages day, Primary 3 learned a Spanish hello and goodbye song – why don’t you try it at home?

Art

Emily – we were learning how to use different materials to make our own clowns in Art with Mrs Thomson, I loved making mine!

In Maths, we have introduced mild, hot and spicy activities where we can choose our own level of challenge.

Katie – I chose the hot one first then moved onto the spicy one and it was fun!

Seamus – I liked doing Maths in my Maths jotter.

Using our bunny ears to show our number answers is still a big hit with everyone!

In Drama, P3 tried something new called Thought Tracking, using the stimulus of a picture of a little boy who was lost at the fun fair. Emma and Ola were in role as the little boy.

Orla – We had to say our thoughts out loud to Emma as she walked past about how she might be feeling.

Emma – It helped me feel like I was actually in the funfair and worried.

Ola – When I walked by everyone, they had to tell me what they thought I should do. It made me feel that I was somewhere else and lost.

Emma, Kate, Sophie R, Sophie YM, Ava, Jack, Teegan, Daniel & Cameron really liked writing about Pingu’s visit to the funfair.

In Literacy, P3 continued to use different media to help practise spelling words. It was shaving  foam and salt this week, so a bit messy! Apparently you have to practise spelling a word at least seven times before you can remember it – so keep practising boys and girls!

Have a lovely weekend from Mrs Scott and P3.img_0540 img_0526 img_0376 img_0348 img_0347 img_0379

P2/3 Weekly News

It has been a short but busy week in Primary 2/3!

We celebrated ‘International Day of Peace on Wednesday and looked at international symbols of peace then we chose to create individual ‘Rainbows of Peace’.  Our rainbows were used to create a ‘Path of Peace’ to our friends at Dedridge Primary School on Friday morning.

We were so pleased to see Father Kenneth when he dropped into our class on Thursday morning and loved telling him all about our writing on St Ninian last week.

On Thursday we started our Big Writing lesson with a VCOP game where we threw a ‘snowball’ with a mystery word on it to each table.  The person who caught the ‘snowball’ had to come up with an interesting sentence which included the mystery word.  The sentences were very creative!

In Science this week we investigated weather, finding out about thunder and lightning.  Next week we’re investigating rainfall and would really appreciate it if anyone has any empty 2 litre plastic bottles which they could send in.

Today we all went to our new committees – everyone had chosen the committee which they would like to be on.  Everyone loved being part of their committee and working with children from all stages across the school.

We’re continuing to improve our fitness with the Daily Mile and getting fitter each week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Amazing P3

Seamus and Teegan have really enjoyed learning to read the time this week, well done, a great skill to have.

Bartosz has learned new maths learn its this week during Beat That Big Maths.

Sophie Young Murray has really seen an improvement in her handwriting this week, good job Sophie.

Last week we recorded ourselves using a measuring tape, we watched these this week and were so impressed with everyones skills at measuring.

Primary 3 have been writing surprise letters to Mrs McMullen, I cannot wait to read them and find out what they are about!

We had a lovely visit from Father Kenneth this week.  Cameron was really interested to find out if he feels welcome at St. Ninians and Orla wanted to know how he feels being here.  Luckily, he feels so welcome and very happy to be part of St Ninians.

Also, today we had our first committee meeting in our new groups.  Everyone is very happy in their committees and looking forward to learning lots from them.

Have a great weekend from Primary 3, Mrs McMullen and Mrs Scott.  🙂

P2/3 Superheroes

Its been another busy week in Primary 2/3.

We found out that our new topic was ‘Planet Earth, Moon and Sun’ and we all had lots of great ideas about what we’d like to learn in our topic.

  • Rachel – ‘What is the earth made of?’
  • Alishba – ‘What’s inside the earth?’
  • Harry – ‘Why do we get day and night?’
  • Hasan – ‘What do animals do at day and night?’
  • Chloe, Carly and Annayah – ‘What is the moon made of?’
  • Matthew ‘What is the earth’s surface made of?’
  • James ‘What is the sun made of?’
  • Aaron ‘Is there ice inside the earth?’

Some other highlights from our week are:

Calvin We wrote a story about St Ninian’s cave. We read our stories carefully to make sure that they made sense.

Alishba In maths we’ve been focusing on a number of the day as a maths starter.  Our skills are getting better every day.

img_2816img_2814

Jakub We used felt tip pens to make the sun and the moon then we displayed them on our classroom windows.

img_1442img_1444

Matthew We learnt about nocturnal animals.  They have big eyes to help them see in the dark.

Kasia We learnt about day and night by making earth by holding hands in a circle and Mrs Keegan held the torch to show us the sun.

We also used the globe and a torch to help us learn about day and night.

img_1450

Awesome P3

P3 were excited to learn this week that baby Kelsey is able to laugh properly now. Alexis showed the other boys and girls a nursery rhyme she knows and used our Roots of Empathy doll on her knees to demonstrate! P3 can’t wait to see Kelsey again in two weeks time!

Well done P3 for your exemplary participation at our St Ninian Feast Day Mass this morning – Mrs Scott was very proud of you all.

Emily – Enjoyed working with different materials in Art to make clowns.

Sophie YM – Really liked seeing and hearing about the dream jars that Sophie R, Teegan, Ethan, Alexis, Sophie D, Bartosz, Huda and Emily made at home and brought in to class to share.

Maliha, Kate, Jack, Cameron, Ola and Daniel liked looking for unfamiliar words in story books from the library to help them learn new vocabulary.

Richard  found it interesting to learn about St Ninian’s life a long time ago.

Huda, Jack, Emma, Kate & Emily thought  our rhyming tasks were fun.

Thank you once again to all of the parents and children who were able to manage our Ninian’s Natter last night.

Have a lovely September holiday!

Mrs Scott

Thank You Message from Fr. Paul

Fr Paul

Just a wee note to say how touched I was with the events surrounding my final day in the school.  Thanks for the Gift Card, and in particular thanks for the Book of Memories. It brought a tear to my eye when sifting through it.

I wish you, the staff and the kids at the school every grace and blessing for the future.

In Christ,

Fr Paul.

P2/3 weekly news

It has been another fantastic week for Primary 2/3.  The class is working so well and really enjoying all of the learning opportunities.

One of our favourite tasks was making our spelling words with pipe cleaners then recording our achievements using the iPads.

Drama was great fun when we took turns in answering questions as George and Grandma from George’s Marvellous Medicine – lots of imaginative questions and answers.

IMG_2754 IMG_2755 IMG_2753 IMG_2750

Our writing was  a real challenge when we wrote descriptions of George  – lots of super describing words were used and the use of punctuation was really impressive.

Yoga was great on Thursday to help us to concentrate – and we all had fun getting into stretches. We’re working hard to improve our fitness during the Daily Mile and our times are improving each time we run.

In maths we’ve been working on telling the time – there’s been lots of time-telling all week.

We’re working on greetings in Spanish.  Our short conversations were really confident and we loved using our Spanish to play games on the smartboard.  One of our favourites is all about colours.

Each of the children has now set an individual aim for the term and look forward to sharing these with you at Ninian’s Natter on Thursday 15th September.

Have a great weekend!
