Primary 3

Hi everyone!

Another very busy week in Primary 3, phew!

In Number we have been counting in 10s and 100s so we are using bigger numbers.

In Adding we have been working on our strategies to add within 100.

In PE, we have been focusing on our hand to eye coordination. We played Skunk Tag, Rock Paper Scissors as well as throwing/catching with a partner. These games also helped us think carefully  about the importance of good sportsmanship when someone is the winner and team work skills.

Here are some of our reflections on learning this week.

Brooke – We have been practising our spelling words in different ways. I have been learning that some words end in _ffs and others in _ves.

Ephraim – I like using the Spelling Challenge cards to stretch and exercise my brain.

Kerr – We made a very special class card for John our Janny who is leaving today. We will miss him a lot. There are lots of different bones in our body and they all have different names like pelvis, collar bone and backbone. We have been learning about compass points – North, South, East and West.

Riley – I learned that we have a shoulder blade.

Ephraim – I learned that we have a knee cap.

Stefan – In between the compass points you get South West and South East.

(NEVER EAT SHREDDED WHEAT) (NAUGHTY ELEPHANTS SQUIRT WATER) (NEVER EAT SOGGY WAFFLES)

Lucy – We were learning about the Sun, Moon and Earth. It takes 24 hours for the Earth to move all the way around. When you are an adult you have more than 200 bones.

Amber – Your bones are hard.

Kaitlyn – We drew pictures of the Sun and Moon using warm and cool colours. When you are a baby your bones are not very strong. They get stronger as you grow. Your knee cap can bend.

Klaudia – We have a rib cage and there are parts of your body inside it.

Mrs Heather was in our class for Number Talks and she was very impressed at how well we could talk about Number strategies.

In Grammar, we have been looking at nouns, verbs and adjectives. We have been looking for them in our reading books, listening for them in The Cultivated Wolf and trying to notice if someone uses one. We are finding it tricky to tell the difference. So, we have decided that from next week we will be focusing on verbs.   Try this Verbs game below: http://www.softschools.com/language_arts/grammar/verb/balloon_game/

This week, our Word Boost words were ache, ignore, budge, improve, emerge and racket. Our story was ‘A Cultivated Wolf’. It had an unusual context and the children loved it, especially as it was about a wolf who grew to love reading – just like lots of our Primary 3s!  Word Boost words next week are nudge, nervous, astonished, continue, separate, co-operate and our Word Boost story is going to be ‘Myron’s Magic Cow’.

Have a lovely weekend, from Primary 3.

Primary 2/3 Weekly Update

Primary 2/3 have had a great week as we continue our learning adventure.

Literacy

In spelling this week P2 have explored the ‘ea’ sound.  They loved listening for ea sounds in a song and spotting ea words in the lyrics.  You can listen to our ea song by clicking below – can you spot the ea sounds?  Everyone decided that they would like to use whiteboards to reinforce their learning this week.

Primary 3 are working on key words and this week learnt the words must, now, off, old, only, our, or and other.

We all wrote a story about when we visited the doctor or the dentist.  Look out for the fabulous stories in our jotters and spot the capital letters and full stops as well as some openers and connectives.

The Obvious Elephant was our Word Boost  book this week and we learnt the words confident, curious, obvious and bewildered.

Everyone had a busy time on Thursday when we went on an adjective hunt and found a huge range of interesting adjectives in the class library.

Numeracy

This week we have continued our learning on addition and subtraction and counting to 100 for P2 and 1000 for P3.  We’ve been ordering numbers, counting on and back and building numbers with the concrete materials.   The Counting Caterpillar game will help you to use your knowledge of place value to put numbers into order.

In Number Talks we’ve been working with numbers up to 20.  How many ladybirds can you see?  How do you know? Can you think of another way of doing it?

Science

We have continued to explore our senses this week and went on a sensory walk on Wednesday to investigate textures in the playground.  There was much discussion on how we could record our findings but the children decided that the iPads would work best. We then made sensory collages when we returned to the classroom.

Finally, we had a wonderful assembly on Thursday to say farewell to John the Janny who retires this week.  We wish John all the very best.

Have  a lovely weekend.

P3 Weekly Round Up!

A quick week it has been!

The boys in girls in P3 have packed in so much learning to three short days!

We are so excited to begin our science topics! Mrs Scott will be exploring the Skeleton with the class and Mrs Conway will lead the learning about the sun, moon and stars – with a focus on the patterns of night and day! We have started to think about both of these and the things we would like to learn about.

Wednesday saw a class vote for our new class novel! The choices were Fantastic Mr Fox, How to Train Your Dragon and Gangsta’ Granny. As How to Train your Dragon and Gangsta’ Granny got three votes each we asked those who chose Fantastic Mr Fox to vote again… which led to Gangsta’ Granny as the overall winner!!! We will read short parts of this novel as a class over the next few months at suitable times in the school day. We continue to promote reading for enjoyment in our class – if there’s a novel or book that your child enjoys at home, please allow them to bring it to school to read for enjoyment on Wednesdays/Thursdays 🙂

This week saw the end of our symmetry topic in maths – and a tricky topic it has been! Some of the boys and girls moved on to creating symmetrical block patterns, which we found quite tricky. Here is a great symmetry matching game which explores reflective symmetry, perhaps you could try it at home?

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching

This morning we had our first pupil committees! The P1-3 committees are play based and range from outdoor learning to games to Mini Glee! This was a big hit with our boys and girls and we are already looking forward to the next meeting!

Keep an eye on your post over the coming days as today we popped some important mail in the post box 😉

At the end of the day today we reflected on our week and the things we enjoyed the most;

Ephraim ‘we were playing a game called poisonous ball in PE, I enjoyed that you got to throw your ball and if it hit the other teams bench their bench would be poisoned’

Amber ‘I liked doing my committee today – it was arts and crafts – I made one painting and one drawing’

Klaudia ‘I really enjoyed the committees. I did the mini glee – we are going to perform on the stage!’

Adam ‘ I liked when we were doing our textbook work in maths’

Sahara ‘I loved posting my letter’

Kerr ‘I liked doing the picture of the world in RE’

We are looking forward to distributing homework on Monday which reflects the changes in our home learning policy following feedback from pupils, parents and staff – stay tuned! 🙂

Have a fantastic weekend!

Primary 2/3 Weekly Update

It has been a short week but there’s been lots of learning going on in P2/3!

Literacy

In spelling we have continued to work on our P2 and P3 key words.  This week’s words for Primary 2 are they, two, we, when, with and you.  Primary 2 have now completed their key words so will move on to spelling patterns next week.   This week’s words for Primary 3 are like, little look, made, make, me, more and much.  Primary 3 will continue to work on key words next week.

We’ve had great fun working on our n, m and h in handwriting and everyone loved working with the chunky crayons.  Our focus this week was on using the correct starting point for each letter.

It has been a revision week in Word Boost this week when we’ve consolidated all of the vocabulary introduced in the last three books.  The children demonstrated a fantastic understanding of all their new words!

Numeracy

In maths Primary 2 have been working on numbers to 100 and P3 have been working on numbers to 1000.  We have had great fun ordering lots of numbers!  Everyone liked playing the Helicopter Rescue game to help us count on and back.

Primary 2 have been busy building numbers to 100 using cubes and Primary 3 enjoyed identifying numbers to 1000 on the smartboard using the Numbers to 1000 activity.

Topic

Everyone was excited to begin our new Science topic on the Senses this week.  We began by investigating our sense of touch – ask your child what they learnt about touch. The class worked together to create a report on their experiment and then illustrated it.  Look out for our report in our Talking Book.

Committees

The highlight of today was the start of Pupil Committees!  P2/3 loved heading off to do STEM, arts and crafts, mini glee, outdoor learning, one world, games club and book bugs then sharing their experiences afterwards.  What a lot of effective contributors we have in the class.

Have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Keegan and Mrs Caskie

Primary 3

Hola everyone!

Another busy week in Primary 3!

St Ninian’s Feast Day Mass

Well done to the boys and girls in Primary 3 who behaved impeccably during our mass which was celebrated by Fr Kenneth this morning.  They definitely deserved their longer break time!

Ninian’s Natter

Thank you so much to those who were able to manage along to our Ninian’s Natter and Meet the Teacher evening. It was really lovely to meet all of you and we hope you enjoyed it.

Science

Primary 3 have came up with some ideas of their own when learning  about skeletons after the September break.  Mrs Scott was amazed at what the children know already!

 Literacy

WORD BOOST – Our Word Boost story this week was The Obvious Elephant. The Word Boost words are confident, curious, obvious and bewildered. Due to next week  being a shorter school week, we will have a revision week where we consolidate the Word Boost words covered in Six Dinner Sid and Baby Brains.

In writing, we continued to use Flat Stanley as our context for learning. Building on our newspaper  report from last week, we wrote another report but this time it had bullet points. We wrote about  the advantages and disadvantages of being flat.

In spelling, we have been practising our key words – these are words which we come across lots of times during reading and writing. We sometimes need to use a strategy  to help us remember how to spell  them  eg  Does it look right? OR Words inside words.

Here are some of our thoughts.

Sahara – I liked listening to the Word Boost story.

Amber – I liked the part of the story where Eric got to ride on top of the elephant.

Stefan – I liked interviewing Flat Stanley to find out what he liked and didn’t like about being flat. It was fun!

Maths Week Challenges

These were a big success!

Kerr – I liked the coloured square challenge because it was interesting.

Ephraim – I liked adding up the coins in our Role Play shop to pay for things.

Leigha – I made triangles and diamond shapes with the elastic band shapes. It was fun.

SUMDOG LOGINS

Our Primary 3 class is now set up and most of the children should now have their Sumdog logins glued into their green diaries for easy reference. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Have a lovely holiday weekend and hopefully the sun will shine a little.

Kind regards,

Mrs Scott

P2/3 Weekly Update

What a busy week it has been in P2/3! Thank you to everyone who came along to Ninian’s Natter on Wednesday.  It was lovely to see you all and for the children to share their Maths Week Scotland learning with you.

In Maths we have been investigating odd and even numbers.  We loved using the Coconut Odd or Even game to help us learn.  Do try it at home and let us know how you get on.  Look out for odd and even numbers when you’re out and about and tell us if you spot any.

Our Maths Week Scotland investigations have kept us busy and we’ve explored lots of concepts including numbers to 100, shape, number bonds, money and problem solving.

In Literacy we linked our writing to Emotion Works and wrote about feeling excited.  We thought about capital letters, full stops and connectives.  Next week we’re writing about a time when we had to say sorry. Well done to this week’s Star Writers, Abigail and Blake.

In spelling our focus has been on learning our P2 and P3 key words.  The P2 words this week were new, no, not, on, one , said, she and so.  The P3 words this week were from, go, going, has, her, here, if and into.  Everyone loved spelling their words with pipecleaners!

We loved reading The Cultivated Wolf in Word Boost and explored some fabulous new words – racket, improve, ignore, budge, emerge and ache.  Can you use these words in a sentence at home?

In handwriting we’ve been reviewing the formation of the letters n, m and h.  Can you find any creative ways of working on forming these letters?  It may involve pencils, crayons or paint!

In topic we were so excited to finish our class novel, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, and rounded off our learning by compiling Owl Fact Files.

Next week we start our new topic on The Senses.  Look out for updates on our senses experiments!

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Caskie and Mrs Keegan

P2, P2/3 and P3 Maths Week Challenges

The children have all been given a challenge worksheet home with them today.

The rules of the sheet are,

  1. Roll two die and mark in the values into the addition calculation boxes and then add to find a total
  2. EXTENSION : Roll two die and use the two numbers to make a double digit number. (For example if you rolled a 2 and a 6 you could make the number 26 OR 62) Mark this number in the first box and then repeat to get a double or single digit number for the second box. Then add together.
  3. You could work out which total you get most often, is there a pattern?
  4. Encourage your child to talk about the strategies they used to reach their answer.

Your child can use any material that you wish to help with the addition calculations (these can range from cubes, coins, beads…)

If you don’t have any die DON’T PANIC! Here is a link to a website with interactive die for you to use.

Happy counting,

P3 Weekly Round Up!

Another whirlwind week in P3!

In writing, Mrs Scott was so impressed with the quality of work that we didn’t just have one star writer… we had three!! Our three star writers wowed the class with their amazing news reports about Flat Stanley. Using connectives, ambitious vocabulary and understanding that newspapers need headlines – these are all the skills we built on this week. We can wait to show you at Ninian’s Natter next week!
Our reading groups are up and running now that we have settled into the swing of things 🙂 the boys and girls are using their decoding strategies to build fluency as they read. We plan to change the reading books on a Wednesday, though when children begin to read novels it happens as and when the book ends. We hear reading on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday in small groups where we use various questioning skills to challenge the children’s understanding of what they have read.
As we are continuing to build a reading culture in our class – boys and girls are encouraged to bring a book from home that they might read for enjoyment in class. We have some avid readers in P3 – Roald Dahl and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have made an appearance this week 🙂
In maths we are continuing to build on our knowledge of number as we practice skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We LOVED the whack a mole game and will continue to use it as we practice counting in 3s, 4s.. etc. Have a go at home – some of us got up to 1000 today!
During Word Boost we read together a picture book throughout the week, focussing on chosen ‘boost’ words to help us develop a broad ranging vocabulary. This weeks boost words were; local, popular, repeat, mumble and vast. Every time you hear any of these words with your child pop your finger on your nose to indicate a ‘boost word’! Can your child use these words in a sentence?
Ninian’s Natter information is on the school’s weekly update – Mrs Scott and I would love to meet the parents/caters of all of our children! Please do come along to meet us, discuss what learning looks like in the P3 classroom and ask questions about the year ahead! 🙂 looking forward to seeing you all then!
