P2/3 Weekly Update

The final week in January has been a busy one in Primary 2/3.

P2 have continued their investigations into people in the past with local significance and investigated James Young this week.  Look our for the fabulous fact files which they have produced!

P3 have continued with rehearsals for their show and it is looking great.  The show promises to be fantastic!

Everyone is looking forward to Safer Internet Day next week.  There are lots of great resources for parents at https://www.vodafone.co.uk/mobile/digital-parenting/archive .

This week has seen the start of our time topic in maths.  We began by looking at the seasons of the year then the months of the year.  Everyone loved learning the months of the year through this song.

We also had fun sequencing the months of the year by playing this game.

Now that we’re all confident with the seasons and the months we have moved on to telling the time to o’clock and half past – quarter to and quarter past will follow this week.  We found this website useful to help us work on these times.

In reading we had the opportunity to reflect on our recent reading.  Everyone chose their favourite character from their reading book and drew their character then explained why they liked that character best.  It was great to see so many amazing adjectives in this writing.

Everyone was so excited to arrive in school on Friday and to see that our Mighty Writer board had been mounted on the wall so we can use it as much as we wish!

We had a fabulous discussion about feedback on our learning this morning.  23 of the 24 children decided that they liked spoken feedback rather than written feedback on their work so we’re trying to build more time for  this into our classroom.  We’ve explored Glow this week and tried recording feedback on our OneNote profiles- look out for more of this over the next few weeks.

Have a lovely weekend!

P3 weekly blog

This has been a very busy week for P3 as we are preparing for lots of upcoming events. We have enjoyed rehearsing for our show ‘A Blast from the Past’. Remember to practise your lines and songs at home.

Next week P3 will be going to St Phillips Church for their class mass. We have been practising our hymns and some of the children have been working on their bidding prayer. We would love if you could join us on Tuesday.

As our topic this term focuses on school in the past and how different they are from our school today, we have been doing Venn diagrams looking at objects you might find in schools in the past, present or both. We cannot believe children in the past were disciplined using a cane or belt!!!!

This week we have been celebrating Robert Burns. We learned about who he was and what he is famous for. We read some of his poems that were written in Scots.

We explored Scots language in more depth. We have created some silly sentences using Scots language and alliteration.

P2/3 Weekly Update

What a busy week it has been in P2/3.

In Spanish we have revised our learning on numbers to 31 and have been working on saying our age to each other.  We had great fun using our language to play games and sing songs.

Everyone loved listening to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk in Word Boost this week then discussing nouns,  verbs and adjectives. Our learning then too k us on to write our own stories about Jack and the Beanstalk using Mighty Writer.

We have extended our digital skills this week by using Microsoft Word to type our spelling words. We had great fun changing sizes and fonts.

In maths we have worked on addition, giving change and number sequences to 100. You can work on number sequences at home by counting in ones from different starting points such as 21, 39, 43. Remember to try and cross a decade when you’re counting.

Work has continued on our One Note profiles and it has been lovely to read of the children’s activities in the Wider Achievement section.

P2 have continued to investigate historical figures with local relevance and made fabulous fact files about St Margaret this week. Do visit our classroom to read the fact files.

Rehearsals continue for our P3-5 show and P3 are working extra hard to learn their lines and songs.

P3 Weekly Round Up!

We have been so busy this week! Between pantos and Christmas lunches we have even managed to squeeze in creating our own books, like the fantastic authors we are!

Our photos this week were taken on Friday morning as we worked as a class team to make up our Mighty Writer mat! We can’t wait to start building Mighty Writer sentences next week, this will be the primary resource we will use in our story writing sessions next term 🙂 the boys and girls were a fantastic help – great job team!

Next week we will enjoy our Christmas singalong with the rest of the school – here is a link to our song, please practice at home as a family so we are sounding like a choir of angels by next week :D:D

Have a fantastic weekend -we hope to see you all on MONDAY at our book launch 🙂

P3 Weekly Round Up!

Wow! This week has gone by in a flash!

Some highlights of our week have included…

Our Achievement assembly! Mr McCurdy presented this very special whole school assembly on Wednesday to tell us all about our schools fantastic achievement of our School Sports GOLD award! Our very own Sophie was included in this assembly too for a fantastic swimming achievement! Please remember to send in any of your child’s achievements from outside of school.. these can be for anything your child has learned to do or anything they have taken part in that has made you proud of them!

We are VERY proud of P3 for their enthusiasm for our Enterprise stall – the lollipop tombola! We spent the week getting organised for the Christmas fair on Thursday night – with everyone in the class having a part of the creation of our lollipop stall! We did everything from scratch – and our stall was run completely on donations from our parents and carers! A huge THANK YOU from us to you 🙂

We started by making posters to entice people over to our stall – bright colours, only a few words and phrases – we hope you were impressed when you seen them! Next job was painting the donated shoe boxes – they looked fab by the time they were finished! We counted the prizes, then split them across our four table groups. Two children from each group were responsible for colouring the ends of 31 lollies for their table – to correspond with their 31 prizes! The prizes were added to boxes of shredded paper for the special lucky dip factor. Two helpers from each table took responsibility for making holes in their tables box by using a hammer and a nail! This was very exciting and the safety conscious pupils made sure they were wearing safety specs and high vis vests! Once this was all done it was time to fill the holes with lollies and get the boxes ready for the fair! A fantastic enterprising experience for our children and one which made around £58 on the night! Well done P3!

Unfortunately as the weather has taken a turn for the worse (thanks Storm Diana!) we have had to adapt our daily mile routine! We enjoyed following a Body Coach schools workout on Wednesday – raising our heart rate and boosting our fitness… And on Friday we enjoyed a Go Noodle workout, finishing with a great breathing exercise to calm us into being ready for Number Talks!

Our usual timetable had to alter slightly this week due to preparation for the Christmas fair and the completion of our Oral Book Review solo talks – we are looking forward to business as usual next week… especially quality time with our reading groups! 🙂

Thank you for your continued support! 24 sleeps until Santa 🙂

Primary 2/3 Weekly Update

Preparation is underway for our school Christmas Fayre next week when P2/3 will have responsibility for the toy stall. We’ve been busy learning about coins and making posters for our stall. We’re still looking for donations so please hand in any toys to the office before Wednesday.

We’ve had great fun celebrating Book Week Scotland and loved our reading lunch on Thursday. P2/3 found some really creative places to cosy up and read.

Everyone loved receiving their Read, Write, Count bags and were excited to share all the literacy and numeracy gifts with their families. We had a lovely time in class sharing the stories and used the ideas to plan our Mighty Writer lesson for next week.

We’ve made the most of Book Week Scotland and everyone enjoyed cosying up in front of our (virtual) crackling fire to enjoy stories.

In writing this week we used Mighty Writer to help us to retell the story of Goldilocks. Look out for our stories on our writing jotters. In our version Goldilocks didn’t eat porridge but something else that was scrumptious! Congratulations to Abu Baker and Lloyd who were this week’s Star Writers.

Everyone is looking forward to hearing about the children’s favourite books next week and it has been lovely to read of the children’s thoughts on our school values this week in homework jotters and in online profiles.

In our topic this week we have looked at the role of the dentist in the community and thought about the skills that a dentist needs.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 3

Hi everyone

Another very busy week in Primary 3!

During Catholic Education Week which continues next week too,  Primary 3 showed great insight and maturity in their understanding of what poverty means – in terms of what you really need to survive.

We have been celebrating Book Week Scotland this week.  On Thursday we were able to ‘Bring a Book to Lunch’ on Thursday which was fun! Along with Primary 4, we were also lucky enough to attend an Author Visit event at the Lanthorn Library. We actually got to meet Badger the Mystical Muff – wow! Here are some comments:

“We love reading…” and “This was the best day ever!”

This morning it was the gifting session of our Primary 3 Bookbags as part of the Read, Write, Count nationwide initiative. Thanks so much to the parents who were able to manage along to our event. We hope it was informative as well as enjoyable for you too! The presentation powerpoint and other documents will be available via the app for you to access.

In Number, Primary 3 have begun to look at Subtraction and have really been focusing on the thinking process they use individually. To support this they have been recording their thinking on a number line – this has proven a little tricky as Primary 3 have also been challenged to create their own number lines. We have been using maths language such as to the decade, crossing the decade, multiples of ten, single digits etc. We will be continuing to build on this next week and use the context of our Enterprise topic to add/subtract money.

Next week, Primary 3 will be busy preparing for our Lollipop stall…. They will be working in teams to create the lollipop bases and make posters etc. A huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time to donate lollipops, shoe boxes and prizes – it is much appreciated!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

From Mrs Scott and Primary 3.

P3 Weekly Round Up!

A fantastic week for P3 – we have been out and about this week… lots of adventures have been had!

On Tuesday the boys and girls were lucky to join the infant classes for a trip to The Vue Cinema in Livingston where they seen a lovely movie called ‘Flying the Nest’. The boys and girls in Primary Three gave this movie good reviews! It was a long morning after walking up and down to the cinema… but the class managed to squeeze in just a little bit more learning before the end of the day!

As it was Cool to be Kind week our young people have embraced the anti-bullying message to ‘CHOOSE RESPECT’. The highlight of Cool to be Kind week was making fortune tellers with positive friendly messages inside! This was so inspiring to our class that many children chose to make additional fortune tellers when finished their work, or during SmartStart. We watched a lovely video at our house captains assembly this morning which teaches us that kindness is a ripple effect…

We hope these messages will continue to live in the hearts of our P3 pupils as we aim to ensure our three school rules are being met; READY, RESPECTFUL, SAFE.

Our new topic is based on the Lanthorn Community centre and how it services the needs of our community in Dedridge. We have spoken about our schools place in the community and some of the buildings/services we have nearby… and some that are further afield! We were very lucky on Thursday as Donna, who has worked at the Lanthorn for many years, agreed to meet us for a tour! The boys and girls came up with fantastic questions about the Lanthorn, some of which Donna was able to answer. Lots of us wanted to know what was up the stairs at the Lanthorn… and now we know; a computer suite, a small meeting room that is used for crafts, a large meeting space, a lawn bowls carpet area and the office of the ‘Dedridge Good Neighbour Network’. We met Cheryl who runs the DGNN and she told us all about the people in Dedridge (and beyond!) who use the facilities. The highlight of our trip wasn’t only the keyrings and badges we got from the library ladies… it was our juice and biscuit we got from the lovely ladies at the cafe! Prior to our visit we looked at the council web page for the Lanthorn and discussed reading for information, scanning and finding key pieces of information and whether a site was a good site to trust. See if your child can find out information about the Lanthorn using the link below;

https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/article/6398/Lanthorn-Community-Centre

As if that wasn’t enough… we also went for a ‘prayer walk’ tour of our local parish church. Father John was there to greet us and guide us around our prayer walk. We learned about the font, the altar, the Tabernacle, the paintins and statues and the stations of the cross. Primary 3 were so respectful and mature during this session – they made us very, very proud! We prayed for the people of the parish and bowed to the cross on the altar as we left. In addition to this, we have been thinking about November as the month of the Holy Souls and learning the Eternal Rest prayer;

After all the excitement at the Lanthorn, we managed to squeeze in a quick ten minute playtime at the Lanthorn Park!

It was lovely to see so many of our parents/carers on Wednesday and Thursday at parents night! Mrs Scott and I would like to thank you for your continued support over this term and encourage you to get in touch with any queries or concerns through the usual channels such as homework diary or afternoon pick up 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Conway and P3 🙂
