Primary 6 Weekly News

Learning Overview:

Literacy: We have been continuing with our Procedural writing genre and we enjoyed discussing some new Boost Words from our class novel. We have also been practising some new Spanish Boost phrases.

Numeracy:

We have been learning to identify different angles and next week we will be drawing and measuring angles using protractors. We have been developing our multiplication skills, using times tables facts to help.

Health and Wellbeing:

We have been discussing anti-bullying as part of anti-bullying week and trying to think of things we can do and ways that we can help to prevent this in our school

Our highlights by Rhia and Michelle:

This week the P6 class has been working very hard.

This week in Writing, we wrote a procedure about how to access OneNote and we discussed the importance of developing our Digital Organisation skills.

On Tuesday we went to the Cinema to see the film ‘The Grinch’.  It was really fun and also some bits of the movie were quite emotional.

In Science we have been learning about how to make a water wheel.

We have been finishing our symmetry pictures to present on our Maths Working Wall.

Mrs Reeves was impressed at how well we did during Numeracy where we were multiplying by 10, 100, 1000 and we really enjoyed the Times Table activity.

Help your child to practice our new Spanish phrases:

Primary 6 Weekly News

Weekly Overview:

  • Numeracy: Looking at addition and subtraction using a standard written method.
  • Maths: Drawing 2 lines of symmetry (horizontal, vertical and diagonal)
  • Literacy: PM Writing focusing on Procedure.
  • New Class Novel: ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by Ross MacKenzie. P6 will be looking at Boost Words regularly as we read this book.

 

Pupil Comments:

Richard/Kuba/Orla: We enjoyed programming and playing with Marty the Robot. We used Scratch to make him move in different directions – it was good fun!

Michael/Carly/Jack: In Writing we all wrote Halloween poems and we worked in groups to create our poems. We typed up our poems using netbooks, printed them and then shared with each other.

Alexis/ Emily: On Tuesday we all went to our Pope Francis Faith Award Mass. All of us taking part in the Pope Francis Award received yellow wrist bands from the priest.

Rachel/Carly: We also had the school Halloween disco on Tuesday evening. The party was really good fun and those of us in the Community Links committee helped with the infant party.

Kate: There was a pumpkin competition and there were lots of brilliantly decorated pumpkins on display.

Emily: I was surprised and happy to win the best pumpkin. My pumpkin was decorated as a blue cookie monster!

Niamh: We all shared our Science presentations in front of the class.

Richard: In RE we were learning about a prayer called The Memorare.

Brooke/ Maliha: On Monday we had lots of fun in PE playing Planet Football games. In PE we were learning about weight and we did heavy weights and low reps.

 

Next Steps:

Help your child to practise their addition skills by letting them add up different items from your shopping receipts. They could check their answers using a calculator.

P6 Weekly News

Another busy week in P6. Here are some of our highlights:

Kate: This week we have been planning Science talks and presenting them to the class to be assessed.

Pawel: We all chose different strategies for our presentations. Some of us prepared Sways, Power Points and I Movies. We all really enjoyed doing this.

Carly: We were introduced to Marty the Robot and we learned how to program them. We all thought it was really fun especially when he danced and played football!

Orla: In Maths we started practising our mental strategies for addition and subtraction.

Richard: In Writing we all wrote a recount about something we did during our half term holiday and we self-assessed our work.

Jack: In P.E. we all chose the gymnastic skills we are going to focus on this term. We chose strength, speed and flexibility.

Niamh: We all chose our new Numeracy, Literacy and Health and Wellbeing goals for this term.

Lennon: We all completed our hand pictures by adding five adults that we can trust from school and at home, and then we decorated them.

Seamus: We also thought about Article 31: All children have the right to rest and play and we discussed what this right means to us.

Angel: We all continued to read our reading books and some of us and some of us answered comprehension questions.

Sophie YM: In R.E. we all copied and decorated a prayer for Mary.

Primary 6 Weekly News

We have had another busy week in P6. Here are some of our highlights:

ICT/Topics

We worked together in groups to use ICT to show our understanding of different topics. We got to choose our groups, whether it was a Sway, Powerpoint or I-movie as well as the learning we wanted to share. It was really fun and enjoyable as we got to use lots of skills.

 

JAMES YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL

Another highlight was when the P6 girls went to the Active Day for Girls at James Young High School. There was a variety of activities to do – Hip Hop Moves, Handball, Creative Dance, Volleyball /Basketball and Dodge Ball. The purpose of the day was to encourage girls to do more sport.

We still love Free Writing Friday!

HOUSE CAPTAINS’ ASSEMBLY

At our House Captains’ Assembly this morning we were reminded of the importance of making healthy choices in what we eat.

WRITING

We worked hard during our Writing Assessment as well. It was an opportunity to show how much we have learned about the Narrative genre. It was good to be thinking carefully about the orientation then the complication and finally the resolution.

MATHS

Maths Week has been fantastic and we have lots of photos in our class Talking Book!

*Outdoors, we used the compass points to collaboratively create a route for another group to find a puzzle envelope. It was lots of fun using the directions created by each group. We used lots of problem solving to find the solutions to the puzzles.  

PE – We got into groups. We had to listen carefully to the angles being given. We then made the angles together such as obtuse, acute, reflex and right angles.

Games – We also played a new game called the Shannon Switching Game which was a bit like Noughts and Crosses. It was fun trying to beat our partners.

P6 Weekly News

P6 have had another busy week. Here are some of our highlights:

Rachel: In Writing we wrote a narrative about an animal.

Andrew: In P.E. we played some new games.

Jack: We played tennis using our hands.

Lennon: We played hockey.

Calvin: In Maths we learnt about decimal fractions.

Sophie R: We made 3D shapes with straws and playdough and also we made 3D nets.

Cameron: For Free Writing Friday I wrote about a footballer.

Richard: We got our first homework of Primary 6.

Jack: We were all given our new reading books.

Maliha: It was the first collection for Credit Union today and lots of us were taking part for the first time. It was really fun!

Orla: I enjoyed making the 3D paper nets this week.

Seamus: In R.E. we learnt about the Liturgical Calendar.

Jack: We learnt that there are different colours for different times like Christmas, Easter, Advent and Lent.

Lennon: It was fun playing a ball game in Music.

Richard: I enjoyed using different instruments to make music.

Pawel: I liked making my own songs.

Carly: We also learnt about the different coloured robes that the priest wears in R.E.

Primary 6 Weekly News

We have had a busy week. here are some of our highlights:

In Maths we have been using a compass to draw accurate circles. We enjoyed it because we learnt from our mistakes.

In P.E. we played hockey and blindfolded football. It was really good fun because we couldn’t see each other!

This week some of us started our Bikeability Level 2 course.

We completed our colour wheel display and we named it our ‘Roller coaster of emotions’.

We have been talking about our class novel ‘Wonder’ and we have all been really enjoying it.

In Music we listened to three songs and had to write down the different instruments, if it was fast or slow, soft or loud, high or low.

In Writing we wrote an ‘I am’ poem from the viewpoint of August, and we had to include similes and metaphors.

We have started to update our Community Profile pages on One Note.

We practised our handwriting during Smart start.

 

Free Writing Friday:

Carly: I wrote a story about Fluffles the lost cat.

Orla: I wrote a Halloween acrostic poem.

Rachel: I wrote a new precept: Never Give Up!

Sophie: I wrote about me doing Hip Hop dancing and hairstyles.

Angel: I’m writing about the best teacher ever.

P6 Weekly News

This week in the amazing p6 we were doing:

 

Maths: In maths we were doing 2D shapes. We were learning what a

parallel line is; it is when two sides are the same distance apart.

Music: In Music we were listening to a song, then guessing what song it was with Mrs Nichol.

Writing: We were writing about a time when we had lots of changing emotions.

R.E: We were writing the Our Father and we were also writing it for our class prayer book.

P.E.: On Monday in PE we played a game called Indiana Jones, we all thought it was amazing and we want to play it again!

We all wrote our class precepts which are kind words to help us live our lives happier.

We started to do a new Smart Start rota this week, so we each had a turn to try 4 different activities. We loved doing it.

We enjoyed our Free Writing Friday.

Rhia: I wrote about my Gran’s birthday. I am proud of my work because I wrote a piece of writing that is true and it’s about my favourite time of the year.

Sophie YM: I wrote about my Show Jumping Day. I am proud of my writing because I have never done show jumping before.

Morgan: I wrote a story about a girl called Honey. I am proud because I love writing and making stories.

Maliha: I carried on my account about my first day in P6.

Katie: I wrote a story about a lost puppy.

Sophie YM: I wrote about my show jumping.

Maya: I wrote about when I got my dog.

We have had a busy week in primary 6. Here are some of our comments:

Richard: We started making our class birthday cards which was fun.

In PE we had fun doing Just Dance with Mr McCurdy and we played an Indian game called Cabady.

Emily: We enjoyed played Opposites in PE.

Seamus: In maths we looked at 2D shapes.

Lennon: We had our class photo taken to go outside our classroom.

Kuba: In RE we wrote prayers.

Maliha: In Music with Mrs Nichol we had lots of fun and we had to answer lots of different questions about music.

Richard: We all wrote comments about the feelings and emotions of the different characters in ‘Wonder’.

Rachel: We all wrote a diary entry from the persective of August, and we had to write about how August felt at Halloween when Jack and Julian were talking about him behind his back.

Rhia: We were learning about Place Value in Maths.

Carly: We completed our class charter. We also revised our Spanish Boost Words from last year. Kate: We started writing for Free Writing Friday.

Brooke: I enjoyed writing about Kali my dog.

Niamh: I wrote about a little cat.

Cameron: I decided to write about my birthday party.

Jack: I wrote a fun story about Batman.

Primary 6 Weekly News

Welcome back to everyone at St. Ninians! We have all had a fabulous start to the new session in Primary 6!

Here are some of our comments:

Carly: We completed a ‘Figure it out!’ maths sheet, where we created sums to give out facts about ourselves. Then we had to solve the sums to find out whose sheet we had.

Brooke: We started reading the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio as our new class novel.

Sophie YM: The book is about the importance of what you are inside.

Cameron: We had to describe the characters in Wonder.

Jack: In PE we played a dice game called Dice Dash.

Carly: We started our new Class Charter.

Sophie R: We played a game where we scrunched a ball of paper (containing interesting facts about ourselves) and threw it in the air. Then we all had to search for a ball and work out who the information was about.

Maya: We decorated our Free Writing Friday jotters.

Rachel: We had an assembly about all the new things we are going to do this year.

Niamh: We are making Ready, Respectful and Safe posters.

Carly: In RE we discussed our hopes and fears.

Sophie YM: We had a spelling test.

P6 Weekly News

What a wellbeing week we have had!!

Some of our highlights have included;
Parkour, football, dance, tough mudder and hand massage!

Our task of the week was to learn hand massage and deliver sessions to the rest of the school. The classes and teachers who we fitted in have given us rave reviews! Ask your child to give you one over the weekend.. they have had plenty practice this week!

Thank you to all the parents who provided their children with sponsor money for our tough mudder event! Mr McCurdy is very thankful to have had the opportunity to raise some much needed funds to support sport in st ninians!

We talked a lot about mental and emotional wellbeing and the physical changes our bodies go through as they grow. Your child may have some questions for you over the coming week 🙂
