P6/7 Weekly Blog

This week was amazing for the children in p6/7 because after a long Christmas break they finally saw their friends again!

Here’s what everyone had to say about their first week back:

Ambra -This week we learned about percentages.

Ivana – We did a Mary Queen of Scots family tree.

ALL-We had Mrs Wassell for Art this week and everyone in the class loved making silhouettes and talking to her.

Ethan-Me, Kalin and Bea went to Mrs Purdie’s office to help make new school values by going to p4 –p7classes asking them what they like and dislike about our school.

Cole and Bea-Today the NSPCC came for a visit in St Ninians to tell us that we can always call Childline and that they taught us that we shouldn’t keep our worries to ourselves.

They told us if we were worried all we have to is call (0800 1111).

Teacher voice:

Another busy week which started with a visit to the Pantomine, all had a great time including the staff. We used this visit as a stimulus for our writing and we all wrote recounts of our visit.

In Art we created a step by step chalk picture entitled, Snowstorm, these are now hanging outside our classroom entrance and look very festive!!

Fractions has been the focus in numeracy and we have been looking for examples of these in real life for homework. we are all more confident in finding fractions of amounts, simplifying fractions and working with equivalent fractions.

In RE we have been discussing HOPE and PEACE, as this is significant during the period of Advent. We also used some reflection points from Fr Kenneth to help us think of how we could make time for ourselves during Advent.

Our brass and choir were asked to perform at Friday’s Cake and Carols Service – a proud moment for them all!!

Our busy week

Pupil voice:

This week has been a very busy week for P6/7, many exciting things have happened!

Cole: The P7’s made Santa’s Grotto and Santa came to our school last night at the Christmas Fair.

Beth: This week the gymnastic team went to compete, my team came 2nd and I came 1st individual I was so excited.

Aria: I went to a gymnastic competition and we came 2nd and 3rd

And this was our busy week.

Teacher voice:

As you heard from the pupils they have had a really busy week.

Our P7’s went to St Margaret’s Academy for their first transition visit. Dr McAllister led them in a Science lesson where they got their bunsen burner licence, learned how to draw scientific diagrams and worked with a partner to complete a science investigation.

Our P6’s went to the Lanthorn to participate in the P6 Cluster Assembly to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. They sang the hymn ‘Follow Me’ and some of the children read out the prayers they had written for Scotland.

As part of Catholic Education Week we learned about life in India and how families had to make paper bags to sell – 10 bags would earn you 1 rupee. The children worked in teams/families to try to make as many bags as they could in 1o mins (thanks to Mrs Reeves for the demonstration). On average each team/family made 17 bags. We all agreed that this must have been a tough job for the families as they would have to work very long days just to make a basic amount to live on.

There was also great excitement in the class this week as we prepared for the Christmas Fair. Santa’s Grotto looked amazing-well done everyone! A special mention to my ‘little elves’ who helped out last night, they did really well!! They raised £160 on the night!!!!!

We started Scottish Country Dancing this week. Mr McCurdy asked us to assist him in teaching the AM nursery some Scottish Dancing, it was lovely to see the older children helping the younger ones, smiles all around!!

Well done to Aria, Beth and Abi who competed in the gymnastics competition this week – they were fantastic ambassadors for our school and came back buzzing with excitement!

Next week we will begin learning more about our country, ‘Scotland’ as part of our interdisciplinary learning. We will also be changing our class altar to purple to celebrate the beginning of Advent.

I finished the week by attending a mass at St Margaret’s Academy this afternoon which was offered for teachers in West Lothian.

Another great week, the time is flying by!!!

This week we studied financial literacy connected to our Enterprise and numeracy work. Everyone had great fun learning about and creating budgets!! The pupils were not amused when they had to spend their hard earned cash on fixing washing machines and paying bills!!! I was really pleased to read about how they had got on with their budgeting task at home, almost everyone stayed within budget. We also looked at the differences between debit and credit cards.

In writing we explored issues affecting Scotland and then chose one to write a prayer about. Check out Twitter to see some examples.

We began thinking about Catholic Education Week and started by discussing what was good about our school, this then led to a discussion about what was good about a faith school. Again see Twitter for our main discussion points.

Preparation is underway for next week’s Christmas Fair – P6/7 are in charge of organising Santa’s Grotto. We have made advertisement posters and videos with the ipads, made template letters using Microsoft Word, made a Christmas postbox, sorted out  Santa’s gifts and wrote a blog post!! Phew…..

Many of the children have expressed an interest in helping me out next Thursday evening between 5.30-7pm. I will give them a time slot to allow them time to also enjoy the evening with their families. They can wear something Christmassy!!!!

A reminder for P7’s that they are going to St Margaret’s for their first Science lesson bewteen 10-12pm on Monday. They will need a small snack.

Have a great weekend – and remember to stay within budget when shopping on Black Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wordboost – We used a powerpoint about ‘Cool to be kind’ to select our BOOST words for the week.

Art – We had to represent the word ‘Respect’ visually in any way we chose for an upper area display.

Groupwork – We worked in teams to make posters about what we had learned about the ‘Science of Happiness’. We have been trying out some of the suggestions.

RE – We researched Saints who were great examples of showing kindness and respect to others.

P6/7 weekly news

We have had such a busy week that we ran out of time to type up our blog so Mrs Roy stepped in to help us out.

Monday

We started the week with spelling and wordboost before having our morning PE lesson. Fitness is the theme and we all worked in teams to play fitness bingo. The P7 girls were the winners! In numbertalks we were working on the doubling and near doubles strategy for addition. During shared reading Mrs Roy introduced us to ‘Inspector Heurisko’s lights’, the story told us about skills we need when reading. Mrs Purdie came into our class this afternoon and was helping us to order decimals using post it notes.

Tuesday

We were learning about abstract nouns in grammar today, we all did well with the task. In the afternoon we went to the lanthorn library to choose new reading for enjoyment books.

Wednesday

Mr McCurdy continued working with us on fitness using a Halloween theme. We nailed the monster mash as our warm up!! In enterprise we worked in pairs using our devices and netbooks to research 5 local businesses. We then created factfiles for out display, we could use Microsoft word or a poster. Mrs Scott is joining us now in class on Wednesday afternoons to help us with our reading.

Thursday

We learned about the feast of All Saints and led the liturgy at our whole school mass in the Lanthorn. Mrs Roy was very proud of us all as we led by example. In writing we used a picture as a stimulus. We then had to think of descriptive words or phrases to describe what we saw. Everyone wrote an extended piece of writing and some peoplr shared their story with us.

Friday

Everyone went to their committee, have a look on Twitter to see what we got up to. We also updated our GLOW Profiles using OneNote. Please ask us about these at home and we can show you what we have done so far.

P6/7 Weekly News

This week our lead learners Cole and Joshua took charge of our blog post and gathered pupil voice to help them.

On Wednesday and Thursday Mrs Roy was teaching us about decimals and made it fun. We watched a video as our starter activity and then some of us used tenth strips or did written tasks. We can now read, identify and sequence decimal fractions.

The P7’s went to meet their buddies this week for some paired reading, it was nice to catch up with them all. We helped them with reading and spelling.

This week Mrs Roy was teaching us how to use GLOW and we learned how to email. We all had to email Mrs Roy and then choose someone else in the class to email. We entered the WLC Name a Gritter Competition via our emails. We know we have to be sensible when using GLOW. It is important that we bring our devices to school each day to allow us to log on and use the different tools, we are also going to be starting our GLOW profiles.

In writing we wrote letters to NASA applying for a job to work there. We had to write about our skills, achievements, talents, etc.

In PE we are focusing on fitness with Mr McCurdy and Mrs Roy.

Today our school basketball team are playing another school – good luck to everyone!!

P6/7 Weekly News

Where do we begin, what a busy week it has been!

Monday

We used a science text and identified our 8 BOOST words for the week, they were pretty tricky! Each day we will be doing a different activity liked to our BOOST words. During PE we went outside with Mrs Roy for rugby and did some rugby circuit work. It got messy especially at the station where we had to lie on our stomachs and then race to the rugby ball!! We finished reading chapter 7 of Kensuke’s Kingdom and learned more about the relationship between Michael and Kensuke. Everyone took part in Numbertalks and we enjoyed sharing our strategies. The Solar System is our mini science topic this term and we were learning about constellations and the different parts of the solar system.

Wednesday

Today we worked in our reading groups and did some work on our HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills), we will be using these across the curriculum throughout the year. Mr McCurdy took us outside for our final rugby practice before our rugby festival next week with the other P6 and P7 classes. Jazz was great fun as we were composing and playing our own tunes which we will be performing at a small concert next Thursday at 11am, parents welcome to come along. Synonyms were the focus in Wordboost today, not as easy as it looked! In science we explored the planets and then a did a house quiz to see what we had remembered.

Thursday

It was National Poetry Day and we studied the poem, ‘Russian Dolls’ written by Rachel Rooney. Mrs Roy brought in some real Russian Dolls to help us visualise the poem and we listened to a recording of Rachel reading the poem. We all had a go at unpicking the layers of our character and wrote our own poems, we then shared some of these on Twitter, follow us at @mrsroy16 or @StNiniansPS. Rachel Rooney was very impressed an sent us some personal tweets. In numeracy we revised rounding numbers up to 1million as this was something which we all agreed needed a bit more work, this will be followed up with a homework task next week. In RE we spoke about discipleship and identifed how we could be closer to God.

Friday

We started the morning with Numbertalks and played Countdown, Brooke and Haseeb got really close to solving it, here are the numbers if you want to try it at home – 100, 50, 75, 3, 10, 7 – target number was 423. Then we played Quick on the Draw during Wordboost and worked in teams to think of ways to visualise all of our BOOST words. Then we went to our House Assemblies.

Other news

Ethan took part in the WL Schools Cross Country event at Dechmont representing our school and he came 4th which was a fantastic achievement!!! Well done Ethan!!!!
