Whatever the truth of Ninian’s life, over the centuries his tomb at Whithorn became one of the centres of Christian pilgrimage.

The first historical reference to Ninian of Whithorn came from the Northumbrian scholar and monk Bede,in his Ecctersiastical history of the English people written about 731.

St Ninian Fact :
St Ninian who’s feast day is celebrated on 16 September, was the first apostle of Christianity in Scotland.
He was born in Cumbria and educated in Rome. He became a priest and was ordained a bishop, probably by Pope Siricius, after which he was sent to evangelize Scotland. He landed there in 397 at Whithorn near the Solway Firth where he built a stone cathedral called Candida Casa ( White House). He died 432 and was buried at Whithorn.
