This term the children made sand castles using measuring jugs and calculated the total volume from the measurements made. This led to children choosing to independently measure height, circumference, perimeter and area in their castles. Once we were done we shared our ideas and talked about how we worked our the capacity/total volume of our castles. The children used teamwork, problem solving and lots of mental arithmetic!
Category Archives: Numeracy
Taking maths outside really challenges and engages everyone in learning. We love taking our numeracy skills outside and putting them to the test!
2D and 3D Shapes
We have been making 2D and 3D shapes outdoors today. You can see cubes, prisms, pyramids, trapeziums, rhombuses and kites! Miss Solomon was really impressed by the problem solving and teamwork today!
After we were done we got to play in the woodlands. Tom, Jamie, Ethan, Joshua and Richelle and Isla liked cooking in the mud kitchen, Owen and Ethan made some bigger 3D shapes and moved furniture inside and Imogen has made trap to protect her den.
Sand Symmetry
We are learning about symmetry so we used our sandpit and things we found in the woodlands to create vertical and horizonal symmetrical patterns with a partner. One partner did one side and then the other completed the puzzle. It was great fun!
Co-ordinates and Direction Games Outside
We love maths outside! We made up our own games using coordinates and directional language and shared with each other. We had a twister style coordinates game, a jump to the coordinate game, a game using directional language (clockwise, anti clockwise, angles, turns, left, right etc) to find the coordinate and lots of variations!
Measuring Trees
We measured the height and circumference of trees in our woodlands this week! We used our bodies to measure and we hugged the trees. We measured our arm span and any space between our hands to work out the circumference. To measure the height of the tree we got somebody to hold a meter stick near the tree and then we went back until our finger was the same length as the meter stick. We used our fingers as a meter and we measured how tall the tree was! We recorded our finding s in our outdoor journals! We also used tape measures and rulers!
‘I learned that it’s really easy to measure something that is bigger than you!’ – Katie
‘It was spectacular and amazing!’ – Owen
