Friday 25th October

On Tuesday we started making our weather vanes with Mrs Hopkinson. Hopefully we will get them completed and home for next week.

Hopefully our ones will look as good as this one – no it will be better!

We are having to read the instructions on how to make the weather vane and carry them out. Both Mrs Hopkinson and Mrs Coreo will be helping us.

Recycling.

Over the last week before our October holiday we had to eat lots and lots of jelly so that we could all have an empty carton with a lid to use for the base of our weather vane.

We have also been introduced to The First Minister’s reading Challenge. We are challenging ourselves to be to build a reading culture within our schools, home and community  to help us to  discover the power of reading.

We have all been given a Reading Passport – for every book we read we will be given a FMRC sticker. Once we have read 10 books we will be given a reading award medal.

Thursday 19th September

We had a great start to the day by practising our number on SUMDOG. Everyone loves SUMDOG!

After play we did our writing like we do every Thursday. We looked at the different characters in our class novel and created a character description of them. So far the storyteller doesn’t have a name so we could name him what we wanted. When we created our plans we had to try and remember things that had been mentioned in the story like Mr Irons one of the teachers is really moany and doesn’t like people being happy, he is very strict and is always trying to secretly comb his moustache. We had been doing work on adjectives and similes so then we had to use our character plan and write a description of the character. Before that though we heard and looked at some WAGOLL’s so we had a better idea of how we were to write. We tried really hard to use adjectives and similes and to write in joined up handwriting. Miss Angus is going to read out some of the descriptions without saying who it is so we have to guess the character.

Wednesday 18th September

P5 have been reading the book “The Boy at the Back of the Class” by Onjali Q. Rauf. We are really enjoying finding out about a boy called Ahmet who is a refugee from Syria. The storyteller is trying to make friends with Ahmet so brings him in a pomegranate.

Most of our class hadn’t seen or tasted a pomegranate before so Miss Angus brought one in. We looked at it and touched it first. It looked like a squashy ball with a funny neck sticking out of it and though it had a tough skin it felt quite soft and squashy in bits. Mrs Brady then went and cut it open for us. We washed our hands and then could taste it if we wanted to . It was delicious and we want to go and buy our own pomegranates! Only one person didn’t like it.

Friday 13th September

We have had anther busy week in P5 . We still haven’t finished our McCoos but we have made a good start. We have to thank Declan and Olivia who ran the resources that we needed like a shop. Class monitors and others got all the glue and spreaders prepared . We have some work that is going to be fantastic when it is finished! In number we have been working with numbers that are bigger than we normally work with. It was hard at first but we are getting there. We played a really good game where we had to roll a dice – some of Miss Angus’ dice had numbers to 20 on them and generate a list of 5  3,4,5 or 6 digit numbers and then put them in order from either the biggest to the smallest or the smallest to the biggest. Someone stole the time because in no time it was playtime! That’s what Miss Angus says when we run out of time. Who has taken the time because sometimes we can’t believe how quickly it has passed. In our reading and writing we have been looking at questions, different types of questions and settings to make our writing grab the readers attention. We had to describe the setting for a photo of a room that was abandoned using our senses. The photo had mould on the walls, pigeon poo everywhere, a damaged roof and one chair that was filthy and had a rabbit toy on it. We will show some later.

Friday 6th September

Welcome to the Fantastic P5 blog! Already we have been doing lots of fun learning and we were very lucky to have a teacher in from MISSIO who took some of his class to Zambia to help build and set up a school. Throughout the year we are going to try and help them through various fundraising events to help them build and set up a school in Uganda.

Have a look at some of the things P5 have been doing! Already we have been finding out about refugees and what a refugee is because we are reading an amazing novel called “The Boy At The Back Of The Class” by Onjali Q. Rauf. We can’t believe that we play so many games to help us to learn our number and maths work! Every day we use our Emotion check in to let our teacher know how we are feeling. We can then change it as our feelings change throughout the day. We have started our art work but you will have to wait until it is finished before you see it. We will give you a clue….McC00……….
