Hello everyone!
I hope you had a lovely weekend and you all staying safe and healthy.
During this difficult time we all trying to keep busy and keep the spirits up. However, from my own experience I know it isn’t easy. There are days I feel fine, but also I have days when i really struggle. And I also see this happening with my boy. i am sure you all experienced that as well. That is why I decided to talk about our emotions and especially emotions of our children.
We started creating in the nursery our emotion boxes, children were happily involved in decorating them and it was a good start to quality conversations about emotions. Some children were very good at recognising and talking about their feelings, but some had a bit of problem with that. I am attaching pictures of children’s’ emotions box and faces: sad, angry and happy.
Helping children to identify and label emotions is an important first step to recognise and understand emotions in themselves. Children who learn how to understand emotions in themselves and others are better able to regulate their own responses to strong emotions. We can do a lot of things to help our children with their emotions, especially during this challenging times. Some ideas:
- Ask children how they feel, observe them throughout the day
- Talk about how you are feeling during the day in appropriate ways
- Talk about how people might feel in different situations to help children understand the different contexts of feelings and that all people have feelings
- Help children make the connection that all feelings are ok, but not all behaviours are ok
You will find a link underneath for children, hope you all enjoy it
Hope you will find this post interesting. Maybe you try to help children to make their own emotions boxes at home? Or can you think of other ideas?
All the best, Nursery Team
