Letters to Australia (P3A)

We have had a fun and busy week in P3A. On Tuesday afternoon, we went to the PTA Halloween Disco. Aren’t we a scary bunch?!

In music with Mrs Bain, we chose appropriate instruments to create atmospheric sounds to tell the story of The Witch’s Magic Potion. We followed conducting signals to control the volume. In fact we even learned Italian because we now know about crescendo and diminuendo!

In reading this week, we have been looking at giving a personal response to a text. We started by looking at pictures of different items and used emotion cards to show whether we liked, disliked, loved or hated the items in the pictures. Next we played a board game called ‘Likes and Dislikes’ where we selected a topic and moved round the board expressing our likes and dislikes. Finally, Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘Castle Adventure’ and we discussed what we liked and disliked about the story with our learning partners, giving reasons for our answers. Individually, we wrote what we liked and disliked about Castle Adventure, giving reasons why.

In writing this week we have been looking at writing letters. We wrote letters to children in a school in Australia! We used our planning time to write a paragraph about ourselves and to write down questions that we wanted to ask the children in Australia. In our writing lesson, we looked at features of a letter and we used our planning sheets to write our letters to our Australian pen pals. We ensured that we included an address, a greeting and a closing farewell. We worked really hard with our letters and we are looking forward to receiving our replies!

In Numeracy and Maths this week, we have been continuing to look at different strategies to help us with addition. We have been playing different ICT games to revise our number bonds to 20 and to practise adding two 2-digit numbers. We have been using our number bonds to 10 to help us to add a single digit to any 2-digit number. For example, we have been using addition facts such as 5+4=9 to solve 85+4. Miss Harrison also showed some of us how to partition 2-digit and 3-digit numbers and then re-combine the answers to solve different addition problems. We have also been using 100 Squares, Numicon and ten frames to help us with our addition.

This week we have been continuing to learn how to use technologies to share information with others. We worked in our groups to finish creating our PowerPoints on Australian landmarks and we were able to successfully add text, images and animations. Next week we will share our presentations with the rest of the class and we will learn lots of facts about The Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock and Fremantle Prison!

Thank you for reading our blog post,

P3A and Miss Harrison xxx

P7b weekly update.

Numeracy: This week Miss Devonshire taught us about number sequences, we learnt about triangular and squared numbers. After this we made sequences with our partner and we had to guess the pattern of them.

We also learnt about equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. Mrs. Matos has been encouraging us to use concrete materials to help us to understand better. – Emily

Enterprise: This week P7 have started to organise their enterprise projects for the Christmas fayre. Some groups are thinking about doing fake tattoos, face paints and sweet treats. We are very excited about our projects. This week we decided on who we would work with, and on the product or service we going to provide. In the coming weeks, we will need to prepare a presentation and a business plan to Mrs. Matos and Mr. Logan.  Next week, we will begin to research and cost our products/ services.  – Evie & Esme’

Leadership: This week was very exciting. The newspaper leaders completed and issued their very first school newspaper. Well done to all involved, it was amazing! All other leadership groups have also been working hard on all their projects and activities. We love our new senior roles within the school. We are building our confidence and resilience! – Evie & Esme’

PE: Athletics has been our PE focus this week. We will all be attending the P7 Cluster Athletics Festival on the 15 November; Mrs. Reid has been helping us get prepared for this. This week we concentrated on throwing a ball, but with only using our arm strength. We have all enjoyed PE this week, and are looking forward to more athletics practice next week.  – Adam

French: In French this week, with Mrs. Gordon, we moved onto a new topic – ‘la corps’. To help us practice, ask us at home if we can remember and name some parts of ‘la corps’. Our lesson on Friday was filled with mispronounced words and lots of help from Mrs. Gordon, but with resilience we all ‘picked’ it up in the end!– Dayna

Poppy Factory: This week we were lucky enough to go to the Poppy factory in Edinburgh. After our 45 minute long bus drive, we were welcomed with a very friendly and entertaining talk and demonstration by Sargent Major. Matthew, Adam, Esme’ and even Mrs. Matos got to do a little bit of dress up and role play and had the opportunity to experience what it would have felt like during the war.  During our visit we were split into three groups, we were given the opportunity to help make some poppies, which will be sold next year to help  raise funds, and we were given the grand tour of the factory, where we got to meet many friendly volunteers. It was very interesting to hear that all the volunteers were in some way disabled and some were former marines, soldiers or worked in the air force. It was such an honour to meet so many friendly people, to hear some of their stories and to see how every poppy and wreath is made by hand. It was definitely a day to remember. – Anna

P1a spooky news

P1 really enjoyed their Halloween themes this week. Mrs Gordon made a Halloween tray to explore. We all enjoyed making witch craft and potions . This helped us learn about colour mixing. We even wrote a spooky sentence using one of our new tricky words “The red bat”. Our Halloween party on Tuesday was a lot of fun and T won the best girl costume with her fabulous spiky costume.

In numeracy we continued to work on addition, this week we added in the symbols + and = and started to write some number sentences, eg 2+1=3. We also did some work on time and focused on days of the week. We have a few songs to help us and will need lots of practice to remember which day comes where….

In literacy we learned 2 more sounds “u” and “b”, we also started our common or tricky words, we learned all about I, the and to. We need to practice these a lot so we can read them and remember how to write them.

In HWB we thought about what makes a good friend and made our own potion with ingredients like kindess, respect etc …..they are a lot like our values….

In French we added rose (pink) and violet (purple) to our colour repertoire, and can now sing a rainbow (literally) in French.

In PE we were working on balance, we learnt that it is quite tricky to balance a beanbag and bounce a ball when you are doing a balance.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We held our second  ‘values assembly’ of the session today after a fun-filled week.

All children, including our youngest, are brilliant at articulating our values and giving examples of when they are used throughout the school day.

Our infant Halloween disco was a great success and we had fun playing musical statues and other games. Well done to Oliver and Tallulah who won the best costume prizes  for their homemade efforts.

Our nursery children had a great Halloween where they dressed up and made spooky biscuits. The biscuits looked very yummy!

We held a very successful nursery curriculum evening last night where we spoke about our continued work in the nursery. Thanks to all parents who attended.

Our P6-7 Jass awards were also launched this week with all children beginning to work though this scheme in upper classes.

Coming soon, will be a new Rotakids lunchtime club, run in conjunction with Linlithgow Rotary, which will help us to develop community (and global!) links as we work to help others.

Next week is Bonfire Night and we have spoken to all chicken about having fun but taking care during the firework celebrations. As animal lovers, we’d kindly ask you all to look out for pets and wild animals at this time of year too.

I have two pupil achievements for this week:

-Well done to D in P6 for winning a Halloween tennis match!

-A superb effort from our Fizzy Fingers group and Mrs Scott who made these spooky spiders for Halloween! Well done!

Have a great weekend!

A Letter to Australia (P3B)

In literacy this week we have been learning several different skills.  As well as our usual spelling lessons, we have had a lesson on expressing our likes and dislikes about a text, giving reasons why we have these opinions. This is quite a tricky skill and we will continue to practise.  We have been adding our reading books to the school total for the First Mininsters Book Challenge, as we do this it is important that we can discuss what the books are about and give our opinion on the book.

We further developed our letter writing skills as we wrote letters to children in Australia.  As Mrs Kennedy has a friend who teaches in a school in Ferny Creek, Melbourne, she thought it would be good for us to write to children in an Australian school to find out about the differences and similarities between growing up in Australia and growing up in Scotland.   In our letters we introduced ourselves and wrote a little about what we enjoy at school as well as our hobbies and interests outside of school.  We also got the opportunity to ask lots of questions.  Mrs Kennedy will post the letters at the weekend and we hope to receive some replies soon.

On Tuesday we furthered our research on Australian landscapes.  We chose either the Great Barrier Reef or Ayres Rock and then carried out some research and created a powerpoint to show the information.  We presented our findings to the rest of the class.  We were very lucky to have some children from P7 to help with our research and they were also a fantastic help in creating our powerpoints.  They made sure they showed us what to do as well us letting us try for ourselves rather than do all the work for us!  The P3s and P7s worked very well together and Mrs Kennedy was very impressed (I could almost have gone for a cup of tea and let them get on with it!)

In numeracy, we have continued our work on addition, learning different methods of adding a two-digit number and a single digit and some have been adding two two-digit numbers.

We have had the excitement of Halloween this week too.  We all had fun at the party, playing lots of games and enjoying a Halloween snack.  A big thank you to the PTA and our compare, Miss Baillie.

In music with Mrs Bain, we have been creating musical magic spells!  We chose  instruments to create atmospheric sounds to tell the story of The Witch’s Magic Potion. We followed conducting signals, including crescendos and diminuendos to control the volume. As well as being great musicians we learned a little Italian too!

We have been busy spreading the message about our Shoe Box Appeal, encouraging children and teachers throughout the school to bring in shoe boxes or items for shoe boxes.  We would be very grateful for any items you have.

Have a lovely weekend, stay safe and enjoy any fireworks you may see, P3B and Mrs Kennedy

Primary 5 w/e 2nd November 2018

This week, as part of our learning about the outdoors, we have been to Linlithgow Loch and spent some time with the Rangers. We were watching the birds using binoculars, we made pictures out of bird seed, played tig and learned about food chains and we learned about the types of food that we should feed the birds and the diseases that incorrect and mouldy food can cause in the birds on our Loch.

In PE with Mrs Reid we have been playing basketball. This week we were practising dribbling the ball.

We’ve looked at the history of Bonfire Night and learned some unusual facts about fireworks. We’ve also discussed the rules surrounding a safe Bonfire Night.

In maths we have been practising our multiplication and we have begun to formally record this in our jotters.

In science, we have been learning about forces and gravity. We have begun to create rockets and are looking forward to launching them soon.

P4/5 Week commencing 29th October 2018

In our Reading Groups we started working on new pieces of text to help us improve our comprehension skills.

In handwriting we have been working on joining tall letters to small letters. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

In Maths we took part in the BIG Maths challenge to improve our mental maths skills.  We have also been doing “Number Talks” in maths and learning new vocabulary, number bonds and facts about different numbers.  We have also started to add using “chimney sums” to help us.

In PE we have been continuing to learn how to dribble and also how to shoot when playing basketball. We have also started our “Rugby taster” sessions at Linlithgow Rugby Club.  We learned how to dodge and score with the ball.  We are looking forward to going back next Tuesday.

During Art we constructed cube pumpkins and made table decorations to celebrate Halloween.

In French we have been learning how to count forwards and backwards up to 20.  We have also been learning the French words for different colours.

In Drama we played a game where you were given a yellow piece of paper and on it was written the name of an animal that lived in the woods.  We then had to walk around and act out what our animal was to the group.

In our class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” Ben and Badger went out of their cabin at “lights out” to see what Poppy and Fee were doing at the side of the ship. Then they went into a store room which contained life jackets.  When they were there they nearly got spotted by Matron but they managed to hide in the fire hydrant box before she saw them.

By Mr Ritchie and all the “Tiggerrific” P4/5s.

Happy Halloween

We have had an exciting week this week with the Halloween Disco and our special Halloween day.   In Phonics we have been learning the ‘b’ and ‘u’ sounds and in Numeracy we have worked on addition. We learnt all about the symbols we use in sums eg. +  and =.

On Tuesday afternoon we were very excited as we got to dress up in our fabulous costumes and went to the hall with the rest of the infant department for our party. We danced, played games and enjoyed our snacks too. A huge thank you to the PTA for organising this for us.

On Wednesday we had a Halloween day and all of our activities had a spooky theme. We had green slime to write in, we made potions, we wrote spells and we read spooky stories. In PE we were moving around the hall like zombies, witches and monsters. We were working with a partner on our ball skills and practised rolling the ball accurately.

Reminders:

  • The Primary 3 classes are organising the shoebox appeal this year so if anyone has any small donations to put in the boxes or a finished box to help them please send them in next week.
  • Next week is a revision week for phonics so please practise the sounds we have learnt. No new sounds will be sent home. We will also be learning about vowels.

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!
