From Animals of the Savanna to Woolly Mammoths!

What an eclectic mix this week has been!

We began with verb tenses on Monday.  After practising together, we worked in groups to sort sentences into past, present and future.  We then discussed the verbs in the sentences and looked at how they changed according to the tense.  After that we worked individually to change present verbs into past and future tense.  We then wrote sentences about what we did yesterday and what we will do tomorrow, using our verbs correctly.

Each year, Springfield School takes part in the Linlithgow Round Table children’s competition.  The topic for this year is ‘On the Savanna.’ P1 to P3 children were asked to create some artwork on this theme.  We painted sunset backgrounds and then drew silhouettes of animals and trees found in the Savanna.  The results are very effective and we hope the judges are impressed too!

In writing this week we wrote ‘explanation’ texts.  We wrote about the features of a woolly mammoth. On Wednesday we carried out research on the physical features of woolly mammoths and made notes.  On Thursday, using our notes, we wrote factual pieces of writing, making sure to include a heading and subheadings.  We also had to write relevant information under each sub-heading, writing in past tense as woolly mammoths are extinct.  To finish it off we drew and labelled a diagram.  The standards were very high and everyone achieved their success criteria.

On Friday we were at a very good assembly led by P4.  It was all about Egyptians, we learned a lot, including some quite disgusting facts!

We hope you have a good weekend.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been continuing to extend our knowledge of Information Handling this week whilst using a variety of methods to present samples of data, including frequency tables, cumulative frequency tables, bar graphs, line graphs, comparative line graphs and pie charts. We carried out surveys recording tally marks and frequencies before looking at the ingredients for a successful bar or line graph. These included a title, labels for the x and y axes, an evenly distributed scale, accurately plotted points and a key if required. To create pie charts we used a protractor and compass to do so precisely. This required converting a number from a sample of data to a percentage or fraction before converting this to an angle within a full rotation. Tricky! We ended the week by using Microsoft Word to present data of our choice. We carried out research online into a subject of interest before presenting this in an appropriate way.

Literacy and English

We have started a new text study this week, Goodnight Mr. Tom. A young boy, Willie, has been evacuated to Little Weirwold and ended up with Mr. Thomas Oakley. Willie had been subject to abuse from his Mother in London, and life with Mister Tom may provide a welcome escape from this. We have inferred that Mister Tom is disgusted by how Willie has been treated and truly wants to care for him, however, this is reminding of his late son who died at a similar age to Willie. We’ve created mind maps to record our initial thoughts, ideas, questions and predictions about the text and we’ll add to these as we read on. We’re looking forward to seeing how their characters and relationship develops as the story progresses. Ask us to summarise the key points from our reading so far!

Rationing was the focal point for Social Studies this week through our World War II learning context. We were exposed to the basic rations a person, or family of four, would receive on a weekly basis between 1939-1954 and drew comparisons to what we eat each week. Any meals we would still have been able to enjoy were highlighted, however, these were few and far between and we were surprised at how little food people survived on. Our challenge based on this information was to create a recipe using only rationed ingredients or those that could have been grown through ‘digging for victory’. We had to include a catchy, persuasive title, ingredients lists with bullet points, equipment, a step-by-step method with numbers and extra, optional elements. Within our instructions we used sequencing connectives such as firstly, meanwhile and finally, and in our ingredients list we used past tense verbs to improve clarity, e.g. chopped, diced or grated. Next week we will be voting for and preparing the winning recipe(s)…

Health and Wellbeing

We’re coming to an end with our block of dodgeball in P.E and were looking to further develop our accuracy and throwing technique this week. We worked in trios to pass the dodgeball through hoops of various sizes at various heights determined by the middle player. We also played some 1v1 accuracy games by aiming to land the ball in the opponent’s hoop. If we won our 60 second mini-game we moved up, but if we lost we moved down. We then applied these skills within adaptations of our main game by aiming for end targets and targeting identified players on the opposing team.

We have also been learning about Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood this week; one of the 6 key organisers for Health and Wellbeing.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Finally, this week we’ve had another wave of interesting and insightful visits as part of our Skills for Learning, Life and Work programme in P7. Mr. Vereker, a Rope Access Engineer, spoke to us about his aspiration to Spiderman and how his job allows us to ‘access the inaccessible’. We continue to promote varied types of engineering in school as part of our STEM programme and national drive to get more females into these workplaces. Mrs. Schofield delivered a hands-on presentation about kilt making. We were shown the length of material needed for just one kilt and saw demonstrations of how different part of this manufacturing process take place.

On Friday our Sports Committee members carried out some self-evaluation into the P.E and sporting opportunities we provide at Springfield. We are continuing to improve and enhance our sporting provision and are already looking ahead to our priorities for session 2019/2020.

A Digital Disaster in P3A!

In Numeracy, we have been learning to subtract a two-digit number from a two-digit number, with bridging. When solving 72 – 39, first we have been subtracting 30 and then subtracting 9. Some of us have also been linking addition and subtraction and some of us have been using a written method to subtract two-digit numbers from three-digit numbers, with bridging.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have also been learning to use money to pay for items. We played a game called ‘Shopping Spree’ and then we had to lay out coins to buy different items. Some of us were also learning to use the correct notation to record money amounts.

This week we participated in the Linlithgow Round Table Competition. We were asked to draw what we would see on the African Savannah. We created beautiful sunset backgrounds by using paint and blending colours. Afterwards we looked at animals that we would find on the African Savannah and then we drew their silhouettes onto our sunset backgrounds. Our competition entries look fantastic!

This week we concluded our learning on how computers have developed over time. We explored how we use technology in our everyday lives and discussed how we use computers today. In our groups, we finished our PowerPoints on the development of computers. We will be presenting these to P3B before the end of term.

On Wednesday and Thursday we became journalists and reported on a digital disaster! Using our knowledge of computers and how technology has developed over time, we discussed what the impact would be if there was no technology. We worked in groups to make notes on the difficulties it would cause in schools and workplaces and the impact it would have on communication. Afterwards we used our notes to plan our newspaper reports. On Thursday, Miss Harrison showed us how to use our notes to write our newspaper reports. We used an interesting headline and organised our reports into sections using columns.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Artists in Primary 2B

This week in Phonics we have been working in groups – 2 groups have been revising some of their words and 1 group has been working on adding “er” to root words. Next week we will be adding “est” to root words. We have also done some work on Mrs.Burton’s most frequent nag – capital letters and full stops!!

In Numeracy we have learnt about finding halves and quarters of numbers and then continued to use half but in time,  so o’clock and half past the hour. Next week we will be working out time intervals – 1 and 2 hours before and after. The children have been good at telling the time but some struggled with writing the digital time. So more practice needed.

We have listened to “We’re going on a Bear Hunt” and worked on storyboards for it. Some of these have been displayed in the Infant corridor. We have also been finishing our New Lanark sketches and gone over in charcoal as well as our dragon pictures for the competition.

As part of our R.M.E, we have been finding out about the Hindu religion and researched what the Hindu God is called and where Hindus go to worship their God. The children drew some fantastic pictures of both Brahman and Mandir.

In French we’ve had great fun practicing our numbers. Well done everyone.

Have a great weekend – 2 weeks to go until we break up!

Love from P2B and Mrs.Burton

P6B Rugby, competitions and New Lanark

P6B Rugby, competitions and New Lanark

On Monday we did rugby with the Linlithgow rugby club which was our last trial we enjoyed playing matches and sharks and fishes. In maths we were doing money. In health and well-being we were doing living and growing.

Last week we did the Scottish opera with the other class and the P7 classes. We also dressed up and after lots of practices we did a play. #N1J

Yesterday we went to New Lanark to learn about its history and Robert Owen. We went on the ride and a guided tour – our tour guide was called Alex. We saw the old school and the mills.

On Wednesday we were completing our competitions. One of the competitions was on a story of the African savannah. The other was designing a CD cover.

Today was the due date for our Industrial Revolution projects. We will be presenting them over the next week. Sam has already done his movie.

Spring has sprung in P1a

We have been learning all about signs of spring this week in P1a. We went on a spring hunt in our grounds and managed to find everything on our checklist apart from a lamb…. (some people did say they saw a lamb!). We have also been watering our bulbs and they are growing each week. We can’t wait to see what colour the hyacinths will be when they come out…

When we came back to school we wrote about what we had seen. We all worked really hard to include an adjective or describing word to make our sentences more interesting. You will see our lovely writing on the walls outside our class at parents night.

Numeracy

We have been revising our subtraction from 6 and 7 this week, trying lots of different combinations and strategies. We also had to work out different ways to make amounts eg 8p, we found this really tricky as we knew that 4+4=8 so wanted to draw 2 x 4p, but then we realised there was no 4p coin…We really had to use our school value of resilience and keep trying and trying until we could find an answer…

Literacy

Our new digraphs this week were ‘oo’ and ‘ew’ as in look and blew. They both make an ooh sound. We realised that ‘oo’ is mainly in the middle of words and ‘ew’ at the end. Our new common words were ‘of’ and ‘her’.

HWB

This week we did some baking since Mrs Gordon had some very ripe bananas. We learnt about food hygiene and keeping ourselves safe in the kitchen. We made 2 Banana Loaves and then we got to eat them! We all tried it and most of us had seconds…we love baking!

Art

This week we had a guest art teacher…Tallulah’s mum! We made art to go with the story “We’re going on a bear hunt”. We made the swishy swashy grass, some snowflakes, the river and some bears! It was such fun! They are for our “Going on a Bear Hunt” display. Thank you Mrs Lang!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

Singing, recording and visits- Just your average week in P6a

On Monday we had our final rugby session.  In a first we managed all 4 sessions in dry weather! A huge thank you to the coaches, Dougie, Ewan and Ellie who made sure we had fun and learned new skills.

On Tuesday Caro brought a sound engineer, Andrew, into school and we recorded our song for the museum project. We then drew designs for the CD cover and chose a winner- IP. This will feature on the cover of the finished CD. We have 1 more session with Caro next week before our performance in May. Full details about this will be sent home after the Easter break.

In Science we finished our candle holders and then peer assessed these against the design criteria.

We wrote stories about the African Savannah for the Round Table Marches Magazine competition. Mrs Newton said that they are all excellent.

Thursday was a long, exciting day. We went to visit New Lanark. We saw the Mill houses and were suprised at how little space people had to live in. We really enjoyed the Annie MacLeod ride and found the school very interesting.

Two weeks left before the Easter break and these are going to be very busy. Everyone who handed in their extended research task (thank you for the hard work) will be presenting these during the last week of term to the class. We are visiting St Michael’s Cross House for Easter crafts next Wednesday, and in the evening there is a Camp presentation for parents, starting at 5pm.  Parents nights are on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th April and finally on Friday 5th April we are all going to church for our Easter Service. If you do not wish your child to attend this service please let Mrs Newton know.

Plus no homework for us until after the holidays 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,  hopefully the sun will shine 🙂

Time, WOW words and lots of Art in P2A

In Maths we have been learning about time – analogue and digital, o’clock and half past. We are very good at telling the time! Some of us need to remember to check what number the hour hand has gone past when telling the time half past. Next week we will be working on addition – adding 3 single digits.

In French with Miss Devonshire we have been learning to talk about the weather. We have fun actions to help us remember. We know how to ask ‘What is the Weather?’ Ask us to tell you what the word for rain is.

In Literacy we listened to the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We learned what a story setting is and we drew settings from the story. Then we acted out the story and thought of WOW words to describe each story setting. After that we wrote sentences to describe a setting from the story. Our writing was outstanding!

We’ve had a very arty week. At the start of the week we finished our dragons ready to send off for the National Gallery competition. We don’t think they will believe 6 and 7 year olds drew them!

Yesterday we focused on the book ‘Wild’ by Emily Hughes. Click on the link below to listen to the story:

We re-created the front cover using collage, you can see our works of art in the corridor when you are in for parent evening.

In Literacy next week we will be making a storyboard of the story ‘Wild’.

There are still some appointments free for parent evening if you haven’t already booked.

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P2A, Mrs Bell and Miss Devonshire x

P4/5 Week commencing 18th March 2019

On Tuesday we had our tenth NYCOS lesson. We learned a new song called “Categories”.  We had to think of an animal which sounded out two beats otherwise you were knocked out of the game.

We continued with our Egyptian topic by learning about the mummification process. We wrote a set of detailed instructions in chronological order of how a Mummy is mummified.

In Science we finished testing our model “shadufs”.  Then we drew pictures of our models and gave ourselves feedback using “two stars and a wish”. After this we started looking at the process known as filtration to make dirty water clean.

In Maths we revised our six, eight and nine times tables as some of us are still a bit rusty with them. In addition to this we learned how to write the time in different ways. We also took part in the BIG Maths challenge to improve our multiplication skills and some of us are now moving up the levels.

We also played our new maths games called “Noggle”.  Using the random numbers selected the highest value we manged to create was 19,402 using the four operations.

In French we were learning about the weather and created a weather display for the classroom.  Our language ambassadors Mikey and Ben delivered a mini lesson to the class and taught them how to play the game “French Snap”.

In Reading we continued to work hard carrying out our Literacy Circle roles and working on the different stories within the Literacy Box.

We have also started our new class novel entitled “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. We are taking turns to read the novel to the class to practise our reading aloud skills.

By Mr Ritchie and all the “Tiggerrific” P4/5s.
