P1a spooky news

P1 really enjoyed their Halloween themes this week. Mrs Gordon made a Halloween tray to explore. We all enjoyed making witch craft and potions . This helped us learn about colour mixing. We even wrote a spooky sentence using one of our new tricky words “The red bat”. Our Halloween party on Tuesday was a lot of fun and T won the best girl costume with her fabulous spiky costume.

In numeracy we continued to work on addition, this week we added in the symbols + and = and started to write some number sentences, eg 2+1=3. We also did some work on time and focused on days of the week. We have a few songs to help us and will need lots of practice to remember which day comes where….

In literacy we learned 2 more sounds “u” and “b”, we also started our common or tricky words, we learned all about I, the and to. We need to practice these a lot so we can read them and remember how to write them.

In HWB we thought about what makes a good friend and made our own potion with ingredients like kindess, respect etc …..they are a lot like our values….

In French we added rose (pink) and violet (purple) to our colour repertoire, and can now sing a rainbow (literally) in French.

In PE we were working on balance, we learnt that it is quite tricky to balance a beanbag and bounce a ball when you are doing a balance.

P1a weekly news

It was lovely to be back at school after the October holidays. We started our week by sharing  news about our adventures during the holidays. Everyone was very busy! We even managed to write a sentence about our travels using a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces, wow!

Our new sounds for this week were “g” and “f”. We have been making lots of words using our new sounds on our magnetic boards.

In numeracy we started work on addition within 10. We talked about addition being how many altogether. The children will enjoy practising this at home by adding things together around the house.

We did some outdoor learning this week. We were learning all about hibernation. We started by doing an autumn hunt outdoors and found lots of lovely autumn leaves. We learnt about what hibernation is, which animals hibernate and why they do. We made some hedgehogs using our leaves and some puppets of hibernating animals.

In French we revised our colours with Camembear, we had to spot the colours in his photo album.

In Health and Wellbeing we talked about being different and that it is normal to like different things. Everyone agreed it is more interesting when we like different things.

This term we have music with our specialist Mrs Bain. The children really enjoyed playing instruments like tambours and tambourines.

Today we got some very exciting news as we won “Peg Bear” for walking quietly around the school. We also won Class of the Week for our fantastic behaviour and learning, this meant we got extra break time which was very exciting!

P1a weekly news

Literacy

This week we learnt 2 new sounds “o” and “d”. We had a lot of fun making dinosaurs, octopuses and owls. We did some more dictation and used our magnetic boards to make words. Some children even wrote a sentence, they had to think about capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Numeracy

Our focus was on mathematical language. We talked about more, less, before and after and then used them to solve problems. We found that one more and the number before was quite tricky. We used lots of concrete materials to count and make dice patterns, this helped us to visualise. We also did more work on 3D shape by looking at whether shapes could slide, stack or roll and why….We then built some objects with our shapes. Have a look below.

French

We learnt 3 new colours today vert (green), jaune (yellow) and orange. Camembear got us to play “passe le cadeau” (pass the parcel), when the music stopped we picked an object from the box and had to say the colour.

HWB

Today we talked about what makes us special, and thought about things we were good at. We are learning to celebrate our achievements and successes by sharing them with the class.

Yoga, shapes and colours P1a

Literacy

This week we were revising our sounds, can you believe we already know s,a,t,p,i,n,e,h,r and m…..We were playing lots of games where we had to use these sounds to make words like sat, pat, tin etc. We know that when we blend these sounds together they can make words. We also had to try and hear the start sound, middle sound and end sound of the 3 letter words (cvc words).

Numeracy

As we had grasped our numbers to 10 so well we decided to learn about numbers to 20. We did lots of backwards and forwards counting and played fun games like bingo to help recognise these new numbers. Today we even put them in order on a numberline. In shape we introduced 3D shape and talked about the difference between 2D and 3D shape. We were able to sort objects and name them.

IDL/Fairyland

This week we looked at maps and talked about a birds eye view. We each made a map of our playground and our next step will be to make our Fairyland maps now that we know what we want in them. We also had some help from Mrs Philpott to start painting our castle…..we voted for a yellow castle.

French

Today we learned about the French flag, the “Tricolor”, and les couleurs bleu, blanc et rouge. Camembear played a game where we had to pick an item from his box and say the colour.

HWB

We talked about hitting today, and about why we must not use our hands for unkind things. We then drew round our hands and inside drew 3 kind things we could do with our hands.

PE 

On Monday we did Hungry Caterpillar yoga with Mrs Gordon. Look at us below, we were pro’s….

Numeracy

We have been very focused on becoming confident with our numbers from 0-10. We have practised forming them, writing them, saying them and counting them in many different ways. This week we also practised counting backwards which we were very good at. We loved singing “Ten in the bed” and pretending to be rockets blasting off into space. Next week we will move on to some bigger numbers.

Literacy

Another fantastic week with our reading books. Everyone is enjoying reading all about the adventures of Kipper and his family and discussing what we see in the books. We have now learnt m, r, e and h and the rhymes to go along with these. This week Mrs Gordon dictated some words like sat, tin and pat and quite a few of us managed to write those words, this is very impressive…

French

Camembear visited us today to teach us “S’il te plait” and “Merci”, we had to say please and thank you when we wanted to share objects like “la balle” or “le nounours”(the teddy). We also have been learning “tete, epaules, genoux, pieds” for our European Day of Languages assembly tomorrow.

HWB

Mrs McAulay was doing some HWB with us this week. We were introduced to Jigsaw Jennie who helps us talk about our feelings We did some circle time activities to share our ideas about what makes us happy and sad, we then drew 3 things that made us happy. Lots of us chose chocolate, which Mrs Gordon agreed with!

IDL/Fairyland

In Fairyland last wee we talked about the features of castles and had a go at building some. This week we talked about the features of a town. To do this we thought about what we needed in Linlithgow. We had lots of ideas like shops, houses, soft play, restaurants and castles. Next week we need to decide what we will need in Fairyland and make a map of it.

P1a Weekly News

Literacy

This week we learnt another 2 new sounds “i” and “s” we had lots of fun making an igloo out of sugar cubes and playing swat the sound where we try to work out which letter a word starts with. We were very excited to get our first ever homework and reading book this week. We met Kipper, Biff, Chip and Floppy and Mrs Gordon could not believe how well we were reading by the end of the week.

Numeracy

This week was maths week and we continued our progress in numbers to 10 by looking at 6,7 and 8. We really enjoyed making the numbers with the number blocks and using cars to form the numbers. Number 7 let us practice our days of the week as we sang “there are 7 days in a week”. Number 8 was very tricky to write, but we realised if we made an S first and joined it together it made a number 8.

IDL/Fairy land

We almost forgot to write back to our dragon after his letter last week. Everyone drew a lovely picture of how they imagined the dragon to look and then did some writing about their dragon. We can’t wait to see if he writes back to us next week…..

P1a Weekly News

P1a have had a very busy week full of learning and fun.

Literacy

In phonics this week we have learnt 2 new sounds “p” and “n”.  We played lots of games with our sounds and made the letters out of flour, sand, newspaper, popcorn and pasta…We also learned how to read a book from left to right, and what words and letters look like. We even learnt that a full stop is there to make us stop and pause when we read. Next week will will get our first reading book home and Mrs Gordon showed us the characters we will meet….Kipper, Biff, Chip and Floppy. We are very excited…

Numeracy

This week our focus was on 3, 4 and 5. These were quite tricky to write, especially the number 5, so we need lots of practice at home too. We sang the lovely “5 little ducks song” and are getting better at counting forwards and backwards. We also did some more work on 2D shape. Have a look at us making a circle, square, rectangle and triangle from people! We also then went outdoors and made those shapes with sticks, stones and leaves that we found in the outdoor classroom.

IDL/Fairyland

Our first topic was launched this week when a sad dragon sent us a letter telling us his castle had been destroyed and no one was believing in fairyland anymore. The dragon needs us to read more fairy tales and help them rebuild fairyland. We have already built a beanstalk for Jack and we will be busy doing more work next week….If anyone has any large bits of cardboard to help us make a castle we would be very grateful.

French

In French this week with Camembear we learnt about “ca va?” how are you. We were able to reply “ca va bien”, “comme ci comme ca” or “ca vas mal”. We also remembered how to count to 5.

HWB

In Health and Well being we worked on another our our school values – respect. We learnt about respecting others and belongings and also respecting ourselves. We also started to learn about the 5 point scale.  Every day we will move our photo on the scale depending on how we are feeling. This lets Mrs Gordon see any children who are upset or worried about anything. We talked about different scenarios like going to the dining hall, coming to school etc and about how everyone is different. For some people those things can make them nervous and for others not, it is ok to be nervous about things and to share those feelings.

P1a Weekly News

What a wonderful second week we had in P1a. We are really settling in and managing well with all the new routines.

Literacy – This week we learnt our first 2 sounds “a” and “t”. We had lots of practice saying, writing, forming and making these letters and sounds.

Numeracy – Our focus this week was on understanding 0, 1 and 2 and what they look like. We explored dot patterns, numbers, written words for the numbers and counting and matching the numbers.

HWB – We continued our focus on our school values and the work we started last week on kindness. On Monday the “Kindness Fairy” wrote to us to say that she would be looking out for acts of kindness throughout the year. Lots of us enjoyed writing a letter to the “Kindness Fairy” and we hope she might reply to us next week…

Resilience – We also did a focus on another of our values – Resilience. We learnt about not giving up when things are tricky and had lots of fun with our P3 Play Buddies trying to build very tall towers, doing tricky jigsaws and making models out of junk. Can you see N’s “Leaning Tower of Pisa”?

Welcome to school P1a and Mrs Gordon

What an amazing week we have had in P1a. Mrs Gordon is so proud of her wonderful children and all that they have achieved in week 1.

This week we have been learning routines and had a tour of the school. We have been exploring our new classroom and have really enjoyed the house corner, dressing up and the cars.

We started some work on rhyme by reading “Room on the broom” the children enjoyed working out which word was the odd one out.

We met our French bear Camembear and he taught us numbers 1-5 and how to say yes and no, “oui et non”.

Today we were very excited to win class of the week ! Look at us with our trophy!

Springfield’s Got Talent

What a wonderful day we had on Tuesday at Springfield’s Got Talent. All the children were confident performers and really showcased their talent. The Greatest Showman was a prominent theme with 5 versions of “A million Dreams”…. Here are some photos of some of the finalists and our winners. Many thanks to everyone who supported the event from the Pupil Council.
