P1a Block Play and ICT skills

Another fun filled week in P1a with lots of help from our P7 leaders and the P3 playleaders.

Literacy

This week we learned our first digraph ‘sh’ we learnt that when these 2 letters are together they make 1 sound. We all had fun making shape ships’s and writing sentences with our sh words.

Numeracy

We started our block on subtraction by eating marshmallows to demonstrate “taking away”, we really enjoyed that! Our focus this week was on using concrete materials including blocks, pasta, fingers etc to show what subtraction means. We also used number lines to demonstrate jumping back when subtracting.

HWB

In PE with Mr Logan this week we started a football block by doing some ball skills. Have a look at our concentration when we are catching the ball….

We also did some more work on growth mindset where we focused on 2 things we could do and 1 we couldn’t do “yet”.

P3 and P7 Leader activities

Some of the P7 leaders are doing a 4 week block with us on ICT skills. This week we learnt how to log on and off the computer. We really enjoyed this.

The P3 block play leaders helped us create some structures with our new blocks, we even made a church!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Bonne Année et Bonne Retour a classe P1a

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Literacy

In literacy this week we had lost of fun revision all of our sounds from a-z and all of our common words. We did this by playing games like phonics tig and singing songs etc. Next week we are ready to move onto diagraphs… this is where 2 letters make one sound.

We also did some writing about our Christmas holidays. We managed to all write at least one full sentence about what we did.

Numeracy

This week our focus was on revising our number bonds to 10 and looking back at telling the ‘o’ clock times, days of the week, seasons and months of the year. Almost all of us can name all of the number bonds to 10 (eg 6 and 4, 7 and 3 etc). We also did very well telling the time with analogue and digital clocks.

HWB

This week we took part in a bootcamp session with Mhairi. Primary 1 worked so hard that they got to try the beep test. Everyone did so well with this, what a competitive and resilient bunch! 4 children made it to the end of level 10….impressive….

We have been revising our values this week “resilient, respectful, included, kind, confident”. To reinforce resilience we learnt all about our brains and having a “growth mindset”. We talked about instead of saying “I can’t do it”, we must say “I can’t do it yet”. We also talked about making mistakes and that mistakes are a good thing. When we make a mistake we are learning and helping our brain to get stronger. We are all going to try really hard to be resilient and not give up when something is tricky…

Bon weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from P1a

What a fantastic week we have had in P1a. We all worked hard right  up until the end of the week learning our last singluar sound “z” and doing some consolidation of all of our number bonds to 10.

We had a lovely Christmas party and had fun doing Christmas activities. We especially loved watching the cbeebies pantomime “Thumbelina”.

Today we finished off our design project with our P7 buddies. We had to design a new sleigh for santa. We did a great job of explaining all the special features on our sleigh. Lots of us enjoyed creating features such as lasers and hot chocolate machines.

Happy Christmas from Mrs Gordon and P1a.

P1a Wriggly Nativity

What a wonderful week we have had in P1a. We performed 3 shows of the “Wriggly nativity” including one on Monday for our friends at Linlithgow daycare centre. The children were fabulous and enjoyed it all so much they were still making their own wriggly nativity in class up until today!

In literacy we learnt our new sounds “x” and “y” and our new common words want, saw and no. This week we really focused on writing sentences and Mrs Gordon was very impressed with our use of full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

In numeracy we continued to practice our number bonds to 10 and addition with numbers to 10. We are trying really hard to remember which numbers go together to make 10.

In PE we did some Scottish Country dancing. Mrs Gordon could not believe how quickly we managed to pick up a dance to “Bonnie Wee Jeannie McCall”. It was such fun.

The week ended with a great trip to the pantomime where we loved seeing Mr Wells on stage when he had to marry the dame.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Festive fun in P1a

We were very excited to see that Mrs Gordon had decorated the classroom this week ready for Christmas. We all really enjoyed visiting santa at the Christmas Fayre today and spending our money on lots of lovely things. Here are the snowflakes and calendars that we made to sell.

In literacy this week we continued on our phonics journey with the sounds “w” and “qu”. We are becoming very confident with our cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, and really improving when we write sentences on our whiteboards or in our jotters.

In numeracy, more practice with our number bonds to 10. We focused on doubles and can all confidently say our doubles to 5. We also had a first lesson on time where we learnt how to tell the ‘o’ clock time on a clock face. Mrs Gordon could not believe how quickly we were able to know that the ‘o’clock time is the number the small hand points to.

We are very excited to share our nativity with you next week, and have been practising hard all week to make our wriggly nativity a huge success.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Handa’s Surprise and fruit tasting at Tesco P1a

We had a lot of fun this week with our book focus on Handa’s surprise. After our fantastic puppet/drama performances last Friday where we retold the story of Handa we had our first ever school trip…We went to Tesco to find out all about where fruit and vegetables come from. Emily was a wonderful guide and she showed us lots of different fruits from Africa to link in with our topic. We were then very lucky to get to go to the storeroom and then upstairs to do a fruit tasting of different fruits from Africa. We all loved the nectarine, strawberries and blueberries. Lots of children tried the pink grapefruit and apricots but were not so sure of those. It was lovely to see them try new things including dried mango which Mrs Gordon really enjoyed. We got a wee treat on the way out when we go to go in the freezer…

In literacy our new sounds this week were “j” and “v” and we had new common words his, put and was. We enjoyed making and tasting some “j” for jelly!

In numeracy we continued our addition journey by looking at all the different ways to make 9 and 10. We realised this is quite tricky, but luckily we have 10 fingers which can really help us work things out. We enjoyed lots of fun ways to work out our number bonds.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a weekly news

In literacy this week we learnt the sounds “k” and “ck”. We found out that these both make the same sound. We have been working hard at knowing what makes a good sentence and this week did some peer and self assessment of our sentences. It was great fun to be the teacher and mark someone else’s work! We also got to fly a kite, make a kite, look at how clocks work and make a rocket….busy boys and girls.

In numeracy we carried on our addition journey by looking at all the different ways to make 7 and 8. We also learnt about the 4 seasons of the year and worked out which season our birthday was in.

In IDL we continued our book focus on Handa’s surprise. We read the story again and then Mrs Gordon checked if we could remember the order by getting us to sequence pictures of the story in groups. We did really well with this as it was quite tricky.  We then talked about the beginning middle and end of a story and why these were important. Mrs Gordon couldn’t believe how well we were able to draw the key parts of the story and bring it to life. We then made puppets ready for tomorrow when we are going to act out the story in groups. How exciting!

P1a’s Cinderella Musical Extravanganza…

We have had a lovely time over the past few weeks with Mrs Bain our music specialist.

We were really lucky to get to hold and play some pitched and unpitched percussion instruments to accompany the story of Cinderella. Mrs Bain was really proud of how confidently we did this.

Have a look at us below.

P1a weekly news

This week we have been learning 2 new sounds “l” and “c” and 3 new common words he, me and is. We love trying to beat Mrs Gordon when we have to make words or find sounds on our magnetic boards. Some of the fun activities included making caterpillar patterns, cotton wool clouds, ladybirds and more…

In numeracy we have been focusing on revising addition to 2,3 and 4, and learning the facts for 5 and 6. It is quite tricky so the more we can practice and add things at home the better. We have used lots of concrete materials like numicon, blocks, pasta, counters, people…anything really.

in HWB we thought a lot about being a kind on world kindness day and in PE we focused on coordination. Mrs Gordon made us throw and catch balls and beanbags without dropping them. Some of us even added in a clap before we caught them! We really had to use our eyes and space well.

Happy weekend

Bang, whoosh, pop …..P1a weekly news

Another busy week in P1a.

In literacy we have been learning our vowels, and why they are important. We did lots of fun activities to help with this.

In numeracy we continue our addition journey and have been looking at all the different ways to make 2,3 and 4. The children have even been able to make number sentences and model these with blocks.

We did some firework activities this week in art and literacy. We made firework pictures with the oil pastels and brusho which we all loved using. We then wrote some words to describe fireworks like bang, boom, zoom etc.

In PE our focus has been on agility and movement. We had to change movements and directions when Mrs Gordon said a new colour. We really liked the tartan one where we did the Highland Fling.

Happy weekend
