P1-3 SSPCA Visit

We had a special visitor in from the SSPCA today. Primary 1 – 3 got together in the P2 classroom to hear all about the work that the SSPCA do and how we can help animals in need.

We found out about a pigeon called Percy who needed help from the SSPCA after he got covered in oil. Everyone was able to share their ideas about what Percy would have needed to make him better.

We learned that if we find an animal in need we can phone the SSPCA for help but we shouldn’t touch the animal ourselves.

P6 Blog

P6 were responsible citizens this afternoon and set out to contribute to the care and maintenance of our school by litter picking around the school grounds. This links to our work on investigating the local area, as we are looking at the care and maintenance of Pumpherston and Uphall Station. We will be carrying out a research walk around Pumpherston next week to assess care and maintenance as well as other factors such as public transport and housing.

P6 Gardening

Today we spent a lovely sunny afternoon out in the school garden with Sarah-Jane. She taught us about the different vegetable families, including which parts of the plant we eat, what different seeds need to grow and how gardeners plant them. We then had the chance to get our hands dirty (some dirtier than others!) by helping out with jobs in the garden. We planted potatoes, sweetcorn, pumpkins, kale, onions, garlic, leeks, brussel sprouts and sunflowers. Thank you Sarah-Jane, it was great fun!

What a Wonderful Wig Walk!

Thank you SO much to everyone who contributed to the success of our ‘Walk your Wigs Off’ walk today.  This was our part of West Lothian Walking week, and what lovely weather we had for our walks. Thank you to Pumpherston Community Council and the West Lothian Council NETS team for the  loan of litter picking equipment – Pumpherston was looking very tidy today.  We had a fantastic team of helpers with us on the walk, thank you for coming along with us.  We hope you enjoyed it, we were very pleased to have you with us today.

Back at school we were raising money through our Dress Down Day pounds for Team Jak, a local charity raising money to build and improve facilities for young people with cancer – we are very proud to say we raised £200!

Well done everyone – remember, as it says in our song, ‘ I can, you can we can make a difference! ‘

Morrisons vouchers

Thank you to everyone who donated Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers to our school. We collected 1595 which will let us order more trowels, forks and planting equipment for our Ground Force box, and a couple of items to build up our food preparation equipment to help in our learning about Food and Health.

Harvest Service

Thank you again to everyone who donated goods to our Harvest table today. We were very grateful for all the food and produce brought in to school, and glad to be able to help our local community in this way. This year the table also included some of our OWN grown produce- the leeks were freshly pulled out of the raised beds this morning.

We hope everyone who joined us enjoyed our Harvest assembly and we wish all the best to everyone receiving a bag of Harvest goods. This year we were able to give bags to everyone nominated by our school family, and to send many bags to the West Lothian foodbank to help families in crisis. Thank you to the group of helpers who sorted out the bags for distribution. Your help is much appreciated.

We learned at Assembly how our money has helped our friends in Uganda to buy Braille machines for the school and orphanage in Magale, and we saw how happy the children were to receive a pencil each.

We can make a difference!

P1 & P1/2 Get Growing

This week, Primary 1 and Primary 1/2 have been looking at food journeys. First of all, we looked at how milk makes its journey from the farm all the way to our fridges at home (ask us to explain it to you!).

On Friday, we began to think about how vegetables grow and come from the farm to us. We got ‘green-fingered’ and planted lots of different vegetable seeds (carrots, peppers, sweetcorn, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and leeks). We are looking forward to seeing how they grow!

We have left our seeds in our library corridor/greenhouse, so keep an eye out for any shoots peeking through!

Until next time…

P5 and P7 get a taste for learning about Food

Primary 5 and Primary 7 came together today to learn from Mr Rose, a chef from the Scottish Parliament.  He showed us how to prepare a range of fresh fruit then gave us delicious fruit kebabs to try with yoghurt, raspberry coulis or granola he had specially made for us earlier.  Then he used more raspberries, bananas, honey and milk blended together into a tasty smoothie for us. These are awesome ways to eat more fruit !

We then got to see a range of the Scottish produce that is served at the Scottish Parliament.  The catering team there use Scottish ingredients as much as possible to show off Scottish food to the MSPs and visitors.  They also reduce the distance food has to travel and the pollution this would cause.  They make sure to use sustainable ingredients – this means that the way the food is grown, made or caught is carefully thought about so we don’t run out.

We saw honey, oil, chicken, lamb, beef, cheese, chutney and salmon, then we got to taste smoked venison! Then for a grande finale Chef showed us different seafood from Scottish waters including rainbow trout, seabass, plaice and cockles.

It was an excellent presentation and Chef inspired us to try new tastes which we loved! Some of us are even thinking about the world of hospitality for our future careers.

A big thank you to Chef for his hard work, and to the suppliers who generous donated the samples for us to try.

The Eco Factor

Have you been practising your entry for the Eco Talent show next week? The Eco Committee will be hosting the Eco Factor and judging the best two entries from each class to find the best Junior and Senior Eco acts in school.  In class Auditions will be held very soon – the Big Final is on Thursday 20th at Assembly. Remember, if you want to win, your act MUST contain and very clear ECO message…
