Eco School highlights part 1 – Snails and Fish

These photos show Andrew, Nathan and Cody are getting to know some of the animals that live in the Pinewood garden. The snails were found hiding in old plant pots and the boys really enjoyed looking after them. They discovered that snails really like banana!

In these photos Ryley, Aiden, Andrew, Nathan, Joe and Graeme are using waste materials (foil cases from cakes and sweetie wrappers) to make an Eco fish. It was their entry for the Waste Material Menagerie which was showcased at a special primary assembly. There were lots of great entries but their fish made a huge splash!

The eco committee’s plan(s) of action

List of what we do in Pinewood to help the environment

The eco committee have been busy taking stock of all the things we do at Pinewood to help the environment. As you can see from the lists above we do a lot! But, not content to rest on their laurels, the eco committee (group 6) plus some of group 2 went for a walk round the local area to spot what else they could do to help the environment. They spotted lots of things they would like to improve:

  • Reduce the litter around school by doing even more litter picks
  • Give the park benches and signs a good clean
  • Tidy away fallen logs and branches so that the council landscape team can mow the grass more easily
  • Contact the dog warden to get new dog poo signs and dog poo bags for the park

It is now up to the committee to decide which of these things they would like to do first. I imagine it won’t be long before they are back out getting things done. Keep an eye out for them!

Recycled rockets

MOV07603

Groups 1 and 2 have had a rip-roaring time this week with their recycled rockets. The pupils used old juice bottles to make water powered rockets and had a great time shooting them across the playground. In this photo Matthew is just preparing to launch his rocket using a foot pump. He pumped it so full of air that when the water exploded out his rocket almost hit the roof! In the video clip (link above) Ethan is enjoying launching his rocket. Recycling and physics in one go – you’ve got to love it!

The time has flown by!

The Eco committee celebrate the arrival of Pinewood’s Green Flag

We can’t believe that it is almost two years since Pinewood was awarded its first Eco School green flag. The flag now proudly flies above the front door to the school telling everyone who visits that we are a school that cares about the environment. Watch this space for a round up of all the environmentally friendly activities we have be doing.
