As we all know eating a healthy range of food is a great start to life. It provides an opportunity for our children to choose a wide range of food knowing and understanding the many benefits their choices. It will hopefully be a lifestyle choice to stave off illness associated with a poor diet later into adulthood.
In our nursery we use guidelines from Setting the Table (NHS 2018)(http://www.healthscotland.com/documents/30341.aspx) to create our termly menu. There will be four menus for each year and we ask families, staff and children in nursery to suggest snacks they would enjoy eating. A snack is defined more as proportion rather than food type. There are restrictions which we will not incorporate in our menu. These are: No nuts, chocolate spread, hot chocolate, jam, processed meat, crisps/snack and fatty food. We will encourage home baking so sugar/fat intake can be reduced.
If you have any suggestions you would like children to try, please do not hesitate to share.
