Fire Safety Talk with p6 and P7

Yesterday, the upper school were visited by the local fire service who came in to talk about their daily routines and helping the community. The boys and girls asked lots of excellent questions for their CAB conference and even managed to see the fire engine and how it works.

Here are some photographs of the children learning about the fire service.

P6 and P7 Internet Safety

Good afternoon,

This morning the p6’s and p7’s took part in an Internet Safety chat with Mr Davie Thomson, the community police officer from St Kentigern’s High School.  The discussion was based around the use of mobile phones and keeping themselves safe online through security settings. The children watched a short clip from Think you Know (www.thinkuknow.co.uk) and then discussed keeping themselves safe through their security settings on social media. Setting their security settings to private will keep your child safe online and limit the people who can see what they are posting. Mr Thomson reminded the children that if they are worried about anything online they should discuss this with their parents as it is their responsibility to keep their child safe online.

The children were made aware of the age limits and restrictions of social media and learned a lot from this experience.

We hope to work with Mr Thomson in the future for further Internet Safety talks.

This Week in P3G

This week has been a busy one in Primary 3G. We started the week by discussing and adding to our new class ‘learning pit’ display, linking this to our understanding of Growth Mindset thinking skills. On Tuesday we got to put these skills into action as we took part in a tennis workshop where pupils definitely showed a growth mindset as they worked hard to develop some tricky tennis skills by showing perseverance and not giving up.

We are moving on to look more at imaginative writing in class and have started to develop some story plans, thinking carefully about the detail we can include in our writing to make sure all readers are entertained and interested.

Within maths a new topic of Time has been introduced. This is something that pupils can also begin working on at home as they identify a range of different times on an analogue clock face. ‘O’clock’ and ‘half past’ times have been covered so far in class.

Self-reflection and assessment has been successful in the class too as pupils did a great job of identifying progress and achievements across the curriculum and these were shared and discussed at parent’s evening. We will continue to record our progress and plan next steps for learning as we get into the final term of P3.

Overall, the pupils in P3G have done a wonderful job of making me feel very welcome as a new teacher at Murrayfield and we are all looking forward to sharing our learning with everybody throughout the rest of the school year.

P1 news

Here are some of the things we have been doing in P1 this week.

On Monday we had a tennis taster session.

We were learning about 3D shapes. We tried to make them using lollipop sticks and plasticene.

We have been learning about electricity. Mrs Bruce set us a challenge to make something which uses electricity with lego. Laiba made a mobile phone!

We are pleased with our Learning Pit display. We are going to add some of the strategies we use to help us learn.

Mrs Turnbull lost her voice this week. A big thank you to Mrs Bruce for doing all the talking at Parent’s evening. The boys and girls in P1 have been very helpful and trying hard to follow Mrs Turnbull’s sign language and read her lips.

Our week in P4.

Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended the Parent consultations this week, it was great to get a chance to speak with you about your child’s progress. Thank you for your continued support. :-))

This week, the children have finished painting their stones and they’ve had their ‘glue wash’, so they are now ready for going out into the garden.

The class have been working very hard on creating their Learning Pit for the classroom. After a class vote, they chose to have a Lego theme and they worked together to decide on the strategies and comments they could include. Please ask your child about the learning pit, as it represents the learning process very well.

On Monday, the children were treated to a Tennis session from a visiting Tennis coach, Rory. They had a great time, learning some basic skills and working in pairs to improve their technique.

As well as all of this, the children have also been working on Literacy and Numeracy!

One more week to go before the holidays, lots more work still to be done!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Stewart. 🙂

What’s on in P7

Good Afternoon Parents and Carers,

This week has been another busy week in P7. We have been learning about 3D shapes and how to describe them through different vocabulary (vertices, edges and faces) and have been focusing on subtraction and addition in Numeracy. In Literacy we have written about our final thoughts on The Jacobites and have been expressing our own thoughts and opinions about our reading books. We have also been looking at what kind of learners we are in HWB and have been using ICT to support our research and note taking. On Monday the class took part in a Tennis Tournament with a tennis coach. The children had great fun learning different passing and serving skills and then played one on one with a partner. Afterwards they then played a huge tournament with the whole class. The class had lots of fun and hope to continue to have similar activities in the future.

Next week the Upper School will be visited by the Police and the Fire Service. The Fire Service will be coming to discuss how they support the community and for the children to ask them questions for the CAB (Community Action Blackburn) conference in April.

The Police will be visiting the Upper school to discuss internet safety and the proper use of electronic devices.

Here are some photos of the class showing their tennis skills.

Have a lovely weekend.
