Building our early morning learning at Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast club children got off to an early start in “building their learning” this morning.  There was huge excitement when they discovered a box of Lego in the cupboard and as soon as they had eaten their breakfast, they came over to start creating!  Dot in the Kitchen very kindly donated some trays for them to use to keep the bits tidy on the tables.  We are looking forward to seeing some lovely masterpieces from them.

Meanwhile, some of our other “early learners” worked to piece together cogs and to see how they worked together to make the different cogs spin.  There was a lot great learning going on, well before the bell even rang.  The best thing is that they were all having so much fun, they didn’t even realise how much learning was going on!

Another group of early morning explorers tackled Tangrams and either used the pieces to build their own pictures or decided to try to make the pictures shown on cards.

It is lovely to see our pupils eat a healthy breakfast in the morning and to see them safe and happy in the school environment, ready to go into their classes and learn.  If your child has not yet come along to the breakfast club, please feel free to come along for a quick look or ask a member of staff for details.  The more, the merrier!

Brick Club

I have just received training in LEGO based therapy and I am hoping to begin work soon with some groups of children in our school.

LEGO® based therapy is a social development programme based on the highly structured, systematic and predictable nature of LEGO play.  Through LEGO therapy, children can learn to communicate with others, express their feelings, change their behaviour, develop problem-solving skills and develop a relationship with the world around them.

In order to get started, we will need to build up a bank of LEGO resources to enable us to work with the children.  We would be very grateful if you could have a look for any LEGO or DUPLO in new or very good condition which you would be happy to donate to the school to help us.  Loose LEGO would be great, as would any small, complete boxes of LEGO or DUPLO with instructions included, as instructions are required for some of the activities.

Thank you for your help and support.

Kind regards

Mrs Millar

Calling all knitters!

Some of the children at Murrayfield are making good use of twiddle muffs in school. Twiddle muffs can help children, who need to fidget, to concentrate and focus on listening tasks.

  • Do you like knitting or do you know someone who likes knitting?
  • Do you have some balls of wool you could donate?
  • Would you be interested in a parent/carer craft club at the school?

Please click on the link below for a pattern for Twiddle muffs.

Mrs Turnbull will be pleased to receive them any time.

A short, but amazing week in P4!

We have just had an amazing time in the hall taking part in the Dance-a-thon! Although we are a bit tired now, we managed to dance for a whole hour! We also managed to fit in a Gay Gordon’s and a Canadian Barn Dance – so much fun dancing with all our friends in P3, P5/4 and P5 too!

This week, we began our annual Heartstart sessions. This week, we revised our knowledge of what to do if we came across a conscious casualty. We remembered that we have to check for danger first, then check for response, then get help. We can phone 999 or 112 to get emergency services if they are needed.

In Numeracy, we were learning about arrays to help us with our multiplication facts. We already know that multiplication is repeated addition eg, 4X3 = 3+3+3+3. We are continuing to familiarise ourselves with multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

This term, we are concentrating on non-fiction texts and their key features. Our writing will also be non-fiction based, as we will focus on Newspaper articles. If you have any recent (appropriate) newspapers that you can send in, they would be appreciated.

Please continue to support your child with any homework that is sent home and encourage them to attend Homework Club on a Wednesday lunchtime, if you think this would benefit them.

Have a lovely weekend!

P4 and Mrs Stewart. 🙂

Our week in P4.

Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended the Parent consultations this week, it was great to get a chance to speak with you about your child’s progress. Thank you for your continued support. :-))

This week, the children have finished painting their stones and they’ve had their ‘glue wash’, so they are now ready for going out into the garden.

The class have been working very hard on creating their Learning Pit for the classroom. After a class vote, they chose to have a Lego theme and they worked together to decide on the strategies and comments they could include. Please ask your child about the learning pit, as it represents the learning process very well.

On Monday, the children were treated to a Tennis session from a visiting Tennis coach, Rory. They had a great time, learning some basic skills and working in pairs to improve their technique.

As well as all of this, the children have also been working on Literacy and Numeracy!

One more week to go before the holidays, lots more work still to be done!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Stewart. 🙂

P4’s Amazing Week!

Kenzie B – To help us learn about Similes and metaphors, we have been singing a Youtube song that we found.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU

Lennon – This week we have been learning to skateboard, with instructors who came into the school.

Jack C – We used the Jack in the Box game, from Education City, to help us practice counting back in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s.

Erica – We shared our descriptions of the ‘cabin in the woods’ that we had for Big Talk homework.

Alfie – Mrs Cordner, who sponsors a guide dog puppy, gave us the letter she recieved about how Fifi is doing and a lovely picture of her.

Sasha – In P.E., we worked with partners to practice our chest passes.

Murron – In the Circles, with Mrs Stewart, she dropped some cubes into a tub  and we had to count how many she put in. Mrs Stewart took some out and we had to guess how many were left.

Cara – When we were working in our Numeracy groups, one of the stations was a subtraction game that Mrs Stewart made for us. The Triangles had to subtract 2-digit numbers to 50 correctly, to be able to move around the board. If we didn’t, we had to go back to the place before.

Kenzie M – In our writing, we had to think of how to describe the old house, using exciting words.

Lauren – In Education City, the Squares were playing the ‘Jack in the Box’ game which let us practice counting back in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s, from 100.

Alex – On Thursday, the Circles played the Cow Countdown game on Education City. We had to find the missing number in a backwards number sequence.

Derek – Yesterday, we went down to the school library to choose a book for reading in class. We had to make sure that it was at a suitable reading level for us, not too easy but a little bit challenging. It also had to be a book that would interest us and we would like to read.

Jamie – During Science, we were sharing what we knew about water and also what we wanted to learn.

Jack P – The Squares played a subtraction game to 100, with a partner, which meant that we had to subtract 2 -digit numbers mentally to be able to move around the game board.

Ava – On Tuesday, because it was Pancake Day, we had to read a piece of text all about Pancake Day,and answer comprehension questions about it.

Ryan Scott – When we were learning to use the skateboards, we had to go down the ramp, standing or sitting. Even though I fell, I tried again.

Lewis – In maths, we were learning about Carroll and Venn diagrams. These are ways of showing information.

Ryan Stewart – The Stars have been learning about words with ‘ng’ endings and we all did very well in our spelling test today!

Kyle – This week the Suns have been learning about words with ‘le’ endings. If the words have a short vowel sound, there has to be two consonants before the ‘le’.

Scott – This week, we were given our own Education City username and password. We have one copy in the classroom and one at the front of our homework jotters, so that we can log in at home.

Teresa – The Circles were imagining that there were 20 cubes in the tub, Mrs Stewart took some out and we had to work out how many should be left.

Makayla – The Blue group has been reading ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’. We have been reading aloud to improve our reading skills and answering questions about what we have read.

What a week!

Have a lovely weekend! 🙂

P5/4’s Super Scottish Week!

Another fun-filled busy week in P5/4.  This week the children have continued to impress me by their hard work and determination to improve themselves.

A few of the highlights (as chosen by the children) were:

BIG WRITE

Anna:  I loved writing the Mary, Queen of Scots poem.  It was really good because we got to tell her story by writing a poem.  It meant we could test ourselves to see how much we could remember.

Liam:  I liked doing this too as it was fun to work in our trios to think of rhyming words for our verses.

The children worked in trios this week to create a verse about a certain aspect of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots.  I was delighted with the results and couldn’t wait to share them with you.  We would all love to hear what you think!

Mary, Queen of Scots

By P5/4 and Mrs Vince

Poor wee Mary,

She wasn’t very happy.

She’d been the Queen,

Since she wore a nappy.

King Henry wanted his son,

To marry our wee Mary.

The parliament said NO!

Of him, they were very wary.

So Mary was sent across the sea,

In search of her new life.

Once there, she found her very best friend,

And then became his wife.

The marriage didn’t last for long,

For ill with an earache he fell.

In the same year as she lost him,

She lost her mother as well.

Mary came back to Scotland,

Bur France still felt like home.

She met and married Lord Darnley,

In a ceremony under a dome.

The marriage was blessed with a son,

Prince James was his given name.

His Daddy didn’t last for long,

Was his mother to blame?

Lord Darnely, he was murdered!

Mary found this a hasstle.

She married the Earl of Bothwell,

Then got imprisoned in Lochleven Castle.

She escapes and flees to England,

To ask Queen Liz for help.

Her cousin thinks she is after her job,

So locks her up with a yelp!

For 18 long years she stayed there,

She didn’t know the reason.

Until her cousin Elizabeth,

Found her guilty of treason.

Poor Mary know it was coming,

But didn’t want to be hurt.

Her head fell off the chopping block,

And landed in the dirt.

When Elizabeth and Mary died,

James became the one.

England and Scotland united,

The Union of Crowns was done!

SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING

As I’m sure you know, our class, along with P5, have been learning some Scottish ceilidh dances in order to meet some of the dance and health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes.  Here are some of the comments from our class which clearly show how much the children are enjoying this part of the curriculum.

Brooke:  I love taking part in the Scottish country dancing even though it can be really challenging.  This week we started to learn a new dance called the Virginia Reel.  We were in sets of 8 and I kept getting mixed up.  It was really good fun though.

Jack:  I really liked the Scottish country dancing too.  This week P4 were doing it with us and some P7’s too.  The Gay Gordon’s was hard this week as I got a wee bit mixed up!

Jay: I really liked the new dance that we learned this week.  It’s much easier for me to take part now that my cast is off. (Not that it ever stopped him before!)

HANDWRITING

We continue to have a whole school focus on handwriting and our class starts every day (Mon-Thur) with a 20 minute session on cursive handwriting.  The difference that it has made to the presentation of work, across the curriculum, is fabulous.  I can’t wait for you to see this at the sharing the learning sessions next week.

Scott:  I like practicing my handwriting every day because it reminds me to use cursive handwriting in all my work.

MATHS

The whole class have been working really hard this block on subtraction – both mentally and using algorithms.  We have looked at a different strategy each week and tried to complete work to help us use and understand each strategy better.  This week we also had more of a practice using algorithms for subtraction two and three digit numbers, with exchange.  This is quite a tricky concept to master so we worked in pairs using our t-shirt number cards to practice this, before completing work independently.

Brihanna:  Maths is my favourite subject but the chimney sums were quite tricky this week.  I liked that we got a chance to talk things through with our partners while playing the games before we had to do the work.  It meant I could get used to what I had to do before having to do the work on my own.
