We have been making our own pictures of knights!

LI. We are learning what a knight was and what they did in medieval times

SC. I know what a knight was and what they did in medieval times.

This week as part of our interdisciplinary learning Primary Two have been learning all about knights. We learnt that knights had to protect the king and the king gave the knights land to live on. Knights were quite rich people and they had their own horse and armour. We then made some super pictures of knights. We first had to design a shield for our knight then we used tin foil for the armour.

Nursery January 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Nursery is in full swing after the Christmas break. We would like to welcome our new student from West Lothian College, Caren Hay who will be with us on a Monday and Tuesday until 10th May.

The Care Inspectorate visited the nursery last Monday and we are delighted to inform you that the findings were very positive. We will provide you with further information when the report is published.

As part of developing your child’s health and well-being we are working hard with all children to develop their self-help skills such as wiping their own noses and changing their own shoes and coats. Well done to those who have mastered these already and would ask that you continue to encourage your child to develop these key skills at home. On a side note we would be very grateful if you could encourage your child to leave their toys at home unless they have a special reason to show and tell. Thanks in advance for your support.

January 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer,
I hope that you all had a lovely festive period and wish you all a very happy new year. We have a very exciting term ahead at the school. Every class will experience the curriculum through a topic designed to stimulate children. Primary 1, inspired by British astronaut Tim Peake, are learning about space; Primary 4 and 5 are applying key maths skills in their Grand Designs project and Primary 6 and 7 are going back in time to learn about Jacobites. Primary 2/3 are finishing their topic from last term and before starting a very exciting topic on Mid Calder. You will find more details in your child’s Learning Letter and on the school blog.

Grand Designs

This afternoon, the middle area were lucky enough to have a special visitor to come and help them with their IDL context, Grand Designs. Mr Cargill, the Depute Headteacher at West Calder High School, came to share some wisdom and words of advice based on his experiences of being involved in the design of the new high school. He discussed the budget for the school, how some of the money might be spent, and how he knows that tough budgeting decisions will have to be made based on what’s best for the learners and staff in the school. He also shared the questions that those involved in this process have been asking themselves, some of which were the questions we have been asking during our own design challenge. We also learned about the different places Mr Cargill has gone to find ideas to help him. He even travelled as far as Liverpool to visit a newly built school, speak to those who now learn and work in the school, and to take pictures to remember ideas that he liked. Although we might not make it to England to  get some great ideas, we were certainly inspired by the creative layouts and designs he showed us.

A big thank you to Mr Cargill for sharing his experiences. We can’t wait to use what we have learned in our classroom designs and to share our finished designs with him!

Farmhouse Breakfast Club Week

This week as part of the Farmhouse Breakfast Club Week Mrs Findlay has worked with the children to organise a number of events to promote the importance of eating a healthy breakfast as well as promoting our school breakfast club.

To link with our Burns celebrations the children decided on a multi-cultural breakfast to promote that we are ‘One Scotland’ and we celebrate the range of cultures of people who live in Scotland. The children enjoyed croissants, bagels, selection of meats, porridge, lentil dahl, sweet noodles.

Odd or Even?

LI

We are learning to recognise odd and even numbers

SC

I can show an odd or an even number in a variety of ways.

I can explain why a number is odd or even

In Maths and Numeracy this week P1a began by sorting out a big  pile of socks!

We soon noticed that each sock had a partner, so we matched them up and laid them out  in a long line. Next, we  counted  them by  counting in twos. We learnt that these numbers are called EVEN numbers.

Later, we used this game to sort shoes.

Sorting Shoes

Very quickly, we discovered that the shoes didn’t always have a partner when we put them on the shelf. This helped us to understand what  ODD numbers are.

Do we have an odd or an even number of socks? We worked together to solve the problem.

We can show odd and even numbers in different ways.

Why don’t you try this activity at home?

P1b 2D Shape Space Pictures

LI: We are learning about 2D shapes.

SC: I can identify and name some 2D shapes.

SC: I can describe some 2D shapes using relevant vocabulary.

Last week, we identified 3D shapes as something which we would like to learn more about. We agreed that we would need to learn about 2D shapes first, and so we have been learning to identify and describe lots of 2D shapes. After analysing and comparing different 2D shapes, we applied what we learned to create 2D shape space pictures. Once our pictures were complete we had fun was counting, naming and describing all of the different shapes within our picture. here are some examples:

We have also really enjoyed playing ‘Guess the Shape’. We take turns to choose a 2D shape from a feely bag. Without looking at the shape we have to describe it effectively so that the rest of the class can identify it.

Hooray for Arrays!!

We are learning to make and display equal groups in different ways and write number sentences about them. MNU 1-03a

In P3, we have been learning about arrays. We know that they are arrangements of objects/pictures in equal rows and columns. Arrays help us visually see what an equal group looks like so as we can apply it to remembering multiplication sentences.

We have been getting into human arrays outside, finding arrays within our homes and classroom and making arrays within Maths.

We started by making equal groups of objects and counting how many we had altogether e.g. drawing flowers with different petals and aliens with different body parts. Through making arrays out of counters, play-doh, squared grids and gameboard actvities, we are continuing to develop our knowledge of arrays and our recognition of multiplication sentences. Have a look at some of our learning from in class below…
