Primary 4 and 5 have lots of fun at Dalguise!

DALGUISE 2018

This week, Primary 4 and 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Dalguise. On arrival we met our Group Leaders, Ean and Paddy. They made us feel instantly welcome and taught us some fun songs!

We enjoyed lots of fun activities during our stay including Zipwire, Giant Swing, The Burn Walk and Archery!

We loved meal times and the selection of food was brilliant!

We also enjoyed spending our pocket money in the on-site shop!

Our evenings were just as exciting as the children, and of course the teachers joined in enthusiastically in the Disco and Photo Challenge!

It has been a fantastic experience for all the children and we hope you enjoy hearing all our stories about camp!

Visualisation in Primary 3

We are learning to visualise the characters in a text
– I can use my imagination to form pictures in my mind
– I can select the key words the author uses to help me to create pictures and can explain my thinking
– I can use my senses to help me to visualise

This week, Primary 3 started their new IDL context about the book, The Boy Who Grew Dragons, and we were introduced to the reading skill of visualisation. We learnt that visualising is when you use the words an author writes to help you to make pictures or a movie in your mind, allowing you to understand what is happening in the text.

We then heard two descriptions of well-known book characters and, without seeing an illustration, we had to draw a picture of what we thought the character looked like using the key words from the text. We compared our drawings to the real illustration and discussed what words or phrases would have helped us to be more accurate. Using our new skill, we then drew pictures of the baby dragon in our IDL book.

Supporting at home:

When reading a range of different books at home, ask your child to visualise the characters and key events being described. Encourage them to describe the pictures they are forming in their minds, and ask them to tell you, point to or read the words that the author used to help them to create these pictures.

P6 Homework Heroes

P6 boys and girls have worked extremely hard completing their World War 2 homework task. All the children were given the choice of what they wanted to do by picking different activities from their homework grid, these included; paint/make/sew three flags for countries involved in the war, create a box full of items , photos and books from World War 2, draw a bar graph to show the number of people in armies in World War 2 and research what foods were rationed.

The children fully embraced the challenge and brought in a variety  of World War 2 artifacts, which had been passed down from great grand parents. We even had a couple of model airplanes make an appearance.

This homework task was very successful, I asked the children what they enjoyed the most and a lot of them said it was spending time with their parents/carers when completing the tasks.

I would like to say thank you to all parents and carers who helped their children with their homework.

Miss Anderson & P6

Primary 6/7 World War 2 experience

Pupils in P6 and P7 enjoyed a wonderful session with Maureen to experience museum handling of artefacts from World War 2.  We looked and modelled (!) some helmets and attire from the era, whilst learning about some West Lothian based local stories.  We listened to stories about children who were brought to this area after being evacuated from Glasgow and Edinburgh, how war affected daily life in West Lothian and how even President Roosevelt’s wife, Eleanor, visited the area lending her support to the war effort!!

Primary 7’s World War Two Assembly

On Friday, we presented a fabulous  ‘World War Two Assembly’ to our parents and to the rest of the school. We included scenes from the army including forcing people to sign up and conversations between major leaders in the war (Adolf Hilter, Winston Churchill, Josef Stalin and President Roosevelt).  Additionally, we included drama scenes which included surviving an attack in an Anderson Shelter and what it would of felt like to have been an evacuee. At the end of our assembly,  just to make sure our audience had been listening, we included a quiz about some aspects of war time.

 

We worked incredibly hard on assembly by recalling accurate major historical events throughout the war, dressing and acting like people would have done back then, with real items such as gas masks and clothing. We are tremendously proud of ourselves for putting in such a super effort to make our assembly amazing.
