Nursery Outdoor Adventures!

Have a look at the adventures our nursery children are having in the outdoors and in the local community. We regularly visit our school wilderness area, where we use our senses to spot the changes in season, identify mini beasts and also use our numeracy skills to count the daffodils! We are also gaining confidence when climbing, balancing and jumping and we know how to keep ourselves safe.

We visit our community to sing to the residents at Cunnigar House, visit the local cafe, and look at the interesting buildings on the way.

We have been very excited to welcome tadpoles to our nursery and have enjoyed caring for them. We have dug out a pond for them in our nursery garden and we are looking forward to seeing how the grow and change over the next few weeks.

Take a look…….

Nursery Success

We have very recently had a visit from the ‘Care Inspectorate’ to our nursery. The inspector spent a day with our nursery team assessing the effectiveness of our nursery provision for ‘Quality of Care’ and ‘Support and Quality of the Environment’. I am extremely happy to let you know that both were graded Very Good with extremely positive comments supporting the evidence the inspector found. The parents who were approached on the day and those who completed questionnaires also supported this evidence by the positive comments they made, especially emphasising the quality of information given in the ‘on line learners journey’ and the friendly greeting they received from nursery staff on a daily basis.

Well done to our nursery team who should be congratulated on the excellent practice that does happen in our nursery setting every day.

Nursery Book Bag Gifting

The nursery children were very excited today as it was the day of our book bag gifting and all our anti-preschool children were receiving their bag with lovely new books and activities inside. Our preschool children were not forgotten and were delighted to receive a new book to take home.

Some of our parents and grandparents attended the gifting and along with the children were very excited about our special visitor. The Book Bug came along to our nursery to give the boys and girls their gifts. The children enjoyed giving him hugs and high fives and loved showing him our new nursery. After our gifting the parents and grandparents went with the children in to their key groups and the teachers read the group one of the books from the anti-preschool bag. The adults were able to observe our voting system and were involved in choosing what book each group read. We used the title, cover and author to help us make the decision. We all then enjoyed reading together and listening to the stories, discussing afterwards what we liked about it.

This was a lovely way to spend our session at nursery and a super way to encourage families to read at home together and learn more about the books they enjoy.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

November Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer

It was very encouraging to see so many parents at parent’s night. The children were all keen to know what was going to be said about them and I hope there were no surprises when parents discussed what the outcomes were. Every child, it is hoped, will know how they are progressing in their learning and be able to discuss the targets they have set themselves in conjunction with their teachers. It is extremely important that children know what the next steps in their learning are to enable them to challenge themselves and make progress. It is also very encouraging to know that some pupils have gained a bronze award in their personal achievements through the I-Achieve process. It is equally important that as well as attainment in school outside achievements are recognised, please encourage your children to record these and be recognised for them.

Primary 6 and Primary 7 children had a very successful residential to Loch Inch with many children overcoming fears and reservations to take part in skiing lessons and sailing activities. Every member of staff, with the children, said how proud they were that everyone demonstrated a ‘have a go’ attitude. Well done to all the children who gave of their very best.

The children across all stages  are presently looking at Mid Calder as their IDL and it is with great anticipation I look forward to the open afternoon to not only share your child’s learning but to celebrate 40 years of Mid Calder Primary School. We look forward to welcoming you into school on the 22nd of November from 1.30pm. Specific details will be sent out nearer the time but it is hoped you will put this date in your diary.

Please look on our school blog for our diary dates for the rest of this term.

Nursery Term 2 Learning Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 2 in Mid Calder Nursery. We had a busy first term, getting to know each other, making new friends and enjoying our new building. We learned new routines, both inside and outside the nursery. The children risk assessed each area themselves and decided how they could play safely and learn successfully. We learned more about what we could do in each area and how we could use the new resources. The children and staff also talked a lot about what values we aimed to live by in the nursery and we created our nursery charter. This helped us during our first planner about friendship. We have all been showing qualities of a good friend, listening well, being kind and caring and sharing our space and resources with others.

Mrs Murray, Mrs Aikman, Mrs Murphy, Mrs Williamson and Mrs Findlay.
