Bring Your Own Device Update

This week, the Technical Troopers met to discuss the use of Bring Your Own Device in MCPS to find out what is going well and what can still be improved. As we are still in the trial phrase of Bring Your Own Device, we have decided to allow children in P5-7 who have a signed BYOD contract to use their own device during Free Time Friday. The Technical Troopers brainstormed the benefits and possible problems that could occur with this, and also discussed the possible consequence of the contract being broken during Free Time Friday.

We decided that all of the details outlined in our Responsible Use contract will still stand. This will be reviewed regularly to ensure that our pupils, staff and devices remain safe. You can see a copy of our Responsible Use contract here. If you would like your child to engage with Bring Your Own Device, copies of the contract can be obtained from the class teachers in P5-7.

In addition to this, and following on from our taster session from Google at the end of last term, we have recently purchased a set of 10 Virtual Reality headsets. These can be used with most smart phones using the ‘Expeditions’ app. Google Expeditions takes children on virtual trips all over the world, allowing them get up close with historical landmarks, dive underwater with sharks and even visit outer space! This is an exciting new use of Bring Your Own Device that we are looking forward to exploring.

Green Flag Renewal!

A big congratulations to everyone on the renewal of our Eco Green Flag, especially to Mrs George and last years Eco Junior Leadership Team.

We received the following feedback from Eco School Scotland:

I am delighted to confirm that your school has successfully renewed Eco-Schools Green Flag Award status. This is an outstanding achievement, so please pass on our congratulations to everyone involved. Interim Assessment Report Well done to everyone at Mid Calder Primary for successfully renewing your Green Flag status. I enjoyed reading your application and was pleased to see that you had maintained steady progress since your last award, monitoring progress well and sharing your successes with the wider school community via the school blog. The members of the Eco Junior Leadership team have been working hard to keep the campus litter-free, reduce waste in school and encourage a range of Biodiversity to your outside space. In addition, you are to be warmly commended for your community litter picking activities and I am sure that you will enjoy exploring the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as part of your future Eco work.

West Lothian’s Digilearn Event

On Friday, Mid Calder Primary School were invited along to West Lothian’s Digilearn Event to share our journey to becoming an AAL and Bring Your Own Device school. As they were part of our Technical Troopers and Pupil Council Junior Leadership Teams during the key stages of this journey, Calum, Ben, Grace and Kirsty joined Miss Burton and Miss Sherlow to present to Head Teachers, teachers and a range of other practitioners from across West Lothian.

They did a fantastic job in sharing the ongoing process that MCPS are going through in our engagement with AAL and BYOD, and received lots of lovely feedback about about how professional and inspiring they were when presenting. Well done Calum, Ben, Grace and Kirsty!

JRSO – 2016 Induction Event

This week our three Primary 7 Junior Road Safety Officers attended a West Lothian JRSO Induction Event at Broxburn Primary School.

During this event our JRSO’s developed their knowledge of Road Safety, received brilliant resources and were given training on how to present information to an audience. The JRSO’s really enjoyed their afternoon and are very excited to share what they have learned with the JRSO Junior Leadership Team and with the rest of the school.

School Improvement Plan: Pupil Version

At our Pupil Council Meeting this week we looked at the School Improvement Plan and what this would look like, sound like and feel like in our school. The pupils worked together in small groups to use OneNote to collaborate together using the one document, with the other pupils supporting the younger ones.

Here is a copy of our School Improvement Plan in a child friendly version: pupil-version-sip-16-17

House Meeting 1

On Friday we had our first House Meeting of the term. This was a chance for us to meet up with everyone in our house and welcome the new P1s. The House and Vice Captains set a task for us to look at the new school motto: Believe, Achieve and You’ll Succeed and what this would look like and sound like in our school. We are designing shields to display around the school.
