P3 are Saving Our Seas

In Primary 3, we have been learning all about the incredible creatures that live in our oceans through our IDL, Save Our Seas. Unfortunately, we have also been learning that, sadly, these creature’s lives are under serious threat from pollution, especially plastic pollution. To spread the message and help the staff and children at Mid Calder Primary School to become #oceanheroes, we created an informative video to encourage everyone to play their part in stopping the oceans from drowning in plastic.

We then asked each class to make a Promise to Our Planet: a promise of something that they can do to help to Save Our Seas. These promises were then added to a sculpture of a sea turtle that Primary 3 had made using plastic bottles that we had collected from our lunch hall.

If we don’t stop plastic pollution, there could be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050. Can you help to reduce plastic use in Mid Calder Primary? We would like every child to bring a reusable water bottle to school, avoiding bringing a new plastic bottle each day. We would also like you to be considerate of using recyclable products in packed lunch boxes. These are small and easy steps that we can take towards stopping single-use plastic in Mid Calder. Together, we can Save Our Seas.

Nursery Eco Warriors!

The nursery children have been exploring the outdoors. While on these outings they noted there was lots of litter in the area. After discussing what we could do about this the children said they would like to help to clean up their environment. Armed with litter pickers and bin bags they set out on their eco warrior adventure. I’m sure you would agree, what a fabulous job they did.

Green Flag Renewal!

A big congratulations to everyone on the renewal of our Eco Green Flag, especially to Mrs George and last years Eco Junior Leadership Team.

We received the following feedback from Eco School Scotland:

I am delighted to confirm that your school has successfully renewed Eco-Schools Green Flag Award status. This is an outstanding achievement, so please pass on our congratulations to everyone involved. Interim Assessment Report Well done to everyone at Mid Calder Primary for successfully renewing your Green Flag status. I enjoyed reading your application and was pleased to see that you had maintained steady progress since your last award, monitoring progress well and sharing your successes with the wider school community via the school blog. The members of the Eco Junior Leadership team have been working hard to keep the campus litter-free, reduce waste in school and encourage a range of Biodiversity to your outside space. In addition, you are to be warmly commended for your community litter picking activities and I am sure that you will enjoy exploring the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as part of your future Eco work.

Eco JLT Bug Houses

This morning, some members of the Eco JLT created bug houses in an effort to support biodiversity in the playground. During the planning stage, Morgan pointed out that plastic materials which could be used, such as plant pots, may become litter over time.  As such, we decided to use only natural materials collected from the local area.

Eco JLT’s new Anti-Litter Policy

Mid Calder’s Eco Junior Leadership Team have been working hard to combat litter in our indoor and outdoor school environment. After carrying out a litter survey, they created an Action Plan for reducing litter, whilst raising awareness of the negative impact of litter on the environment. The children identified the creation of a school wide Anti-Litter Policy as one of their actions. At their last meeting they brainstormed lots of ideas to include in the policy under given headings. Please check out their results!
