Primary 4b pupils at Mid Calder Primary School have come first in the West Lothian SumDog Maths competition run across all West Lothian Council Primary Schools. Donna McMaster, Head of Education (Development) at West Lothian Council representatives from SumDog visited the school yesterday to congratulate the class and to present them with their winning trophy.

West Lothian Sumdog Maths Competition
This week, some of our classes took part in a maths competition on Sumdog, competing against other school across West Lothian. Mid Calder Primary School has a history of doing very well in Sumdog contests, and this one was no exception.
Primary 4B were the overall winners for the whole of West Lothian, with Primary 5B coming in 2nd place. P4B will have will have a photocall in a local paper, with a Local Authority representative and a member of the Sumdog Team.
We also had 6 pupils who appeared in the top 50:
Kai (P4B) – 22rd
Jamie (P5A)- 24th
Oliver (P4B)- 33rd
Lewis (P5B)- 42nd
Ruari (P4B)- 43rd
Niamh (P4B)- 49th
As we know, it is very important to be accurate on Sumdog, and P5B and P4B were also daily winners over the week long competition.
A huge well done to all those who took part!
West Lothian Sum Dog Competition
This week West Lothian are running a Sum Dog Maths Competition, all pupils from P2-7 can take part in this challenge at school and home. Pupils who top the leader board will receive a certificate.
On Friday P5 showed P3/2 how they could log in and find the competition.
Good Luck!
P1 Number
LI
We are learning to combine two sets of items and say how many there are altogether
SC
I can count the items in each set
I can combine the sets
I can say how many there are altogether
We have been very busy this week practising early addition skills. We count carefully and can record our results as a simple number story.
Tabletastic in P5B
We are learning to recall our times tables quickly and accurately.
- I can recite and recall the multiples and table facts of all tables
- I can use a range of strategies to help me work out a fact if I cannot instantly remember it
This term, Primary 5B have been recapping our times tables facts. We have explored a variety of key vocabulary linked to multiplication including groups of, lots of, times and multiplied by. We have used our bodies to create human arrays and groups to represent a range of multiplication facts.
We also create arrays using materials we found outside, as well as using chalk to create different pictorial and numerical representations of our table facts. We have been practicing our times tables through our Maths Facts of the Day.
Stations:
Teaching station- We have been learning about the links between different tables e.g. the 4 times table is just double the 2 times table, and that 6 x 4 is the same as 4 x 6. We have also been exploring the link between multiplication and division.
ICT station- Sumdog Multiplication Challenge
Game group- playing Multiplication Bingo and a variety of games to develop our quick recall.
Supporting at home:
Security in the recall of multiplication and division facts is vital for future learning in maths. Here are a few ways you can support your child’s recall of the table facts at home:
Tables puzzle– Ask your child to write out one of the times-tables in order, without the answers, and then cut out each question to create a puzzle. On the back of each question, e.g. 4 × 8, they write the answer, e.g. 32. You can then use the puzzle cards to test their knowledge of the answers to table facts or of the question that produces a particular answer.
Quick Fire Questions- At any spare moment throughout the day, ask your child a mixture of times tables questions with a focus on the times tables that they do not feel confident with.
Sumdog– an additional challenge named ‘TIMES TABLES CHALLENGE’ has been added that specifically focuses on table facts. 15 minutes on Sumdog every day would be an excellent and fun way to learn times tables.
All about the 4s!
We are learning to explore how the 4 times-tables are built up and can discuss the patterns within it.
- I can build up and record the 4 times-table in several different ways.
- I can generate the 4 times-table by doubling the 2 times-table.
- I can recite my 4 times-table.
- I can recall individual multiplication facts in my 4 times-table.
This week in our Maths group we have been exploring the four times table.
In Number Talks we have been discussing different strategies for multiplying numbers, these have included known facts, doubling and repeated addition. We think that doubling is an efficient strategy when multiplying numbers by 2 and 4.
We used Sum Dog to develop accuracy with our 4 times tables, we make Halloween arrays and we completed written problem solving activities.
Help at home:
- help us recite the 4 times table
- ask us questions from the 4 times table
- ask us to double numbers
- complete the homework task
- take part in the Sum Dog x4 challenge
Money Week
This week in Primary 1 we have been learning all about money.
LI: We are learning to recognise the value of different coins
SC
- I can sort coins
- I can recognise and name coins of the same value
- I can count 1p coins and say how much I have altogether
We began by investigating and sorting coins using criteria suggested by the children.
The children had lots of different ideas, and soon we had –
- a set of silver coins
- a set of brown coins
- a set of big coins
- a set of round coins
- a set of coins with straight bits
Then we looked even more closely and we began to recognise that the coins had numbers on them, so we sorted them according to the numbers too. We decided to focus on 1p coins.
We looked at money bags containing 1p coins and we counted how much there was in each one.
We played some interactive games on the Smartboard. We emptied the 1p coins out of Piggy Banks and counted how much there was altogether.
We used 1p coins to fill up the Piggy Banks.
We used 1p coins to buy items in a shop.
We used 1p coins to play a game with a partner.
Primary 1 really enjoyed exploring coins this week. We will continue to revisit the topic of Money, and develop our skills further over the coming months.
P2/1 Money Week
During this year’s Money Week the P2s have been revisiting recognising all of the coins and notes, and making totals within 20p. The P1s have also been learning to sort and recognise different coins. As well as conting 1p coins to pay for items in play situations, they are also beginning to make totals using 1p, 2p and 5p coins.
Money Week in P6
We are learning to work out the total cost, how I should pay and any change I should receive.
- I can use a variety of strategies to find a total of several amounts of money with or without jottings or written calculations.
- I can work out the total of several items, and how much change I should receive.
In Primary 6 this week we have been looking at key skills in relation to money. We have used our number talks strategies to help us add 2 or 3 prices of items together, to do this we used friendly numbers and partitioned numbers using ones and tens. Then we used counting on strategies to calculate the correct change.
We completed some written tasks using receipts, played games where we had to select items to purchase and entered the Sum Dog money week competition.
Help at home: Give your children the opportunity to use money in real like situations.

Money Week in Primary 5
Learning intention:
We are learning how to solve money problems
We are learning how to record our working accurately
To mark West Lothian’s money week, P5A and P5B took part in a bug related money challenge. We had to help Bluey the Bug to find his way through a money maze so that he got the highest amount of money possible.
We were given a few hints and tips along the way, and had to record our route and the money Bluey had gained/lost accurately as we progressed through the maze. We had fun exploring the maze, and were challenged when having to calculate the different amounts and add or subtract this from our total.
Across the two classes, the highest amount we managed to get Bluey was £680. Can you find a way help him to get a higher amount?
