A Fun-Filled Week in P6 and P7

Last week P6 and P7 had an exciting week. On Tuesday the P7s had their Christmas party, on Wednesday we all went to see ‘Wonder’ at the cinema and on Thursday P6 had their party. It was a good opportunity for the children to be together and have fun in their year groups.

Our visit to the cinema was very enjoyable and brought the book ‘Wonder’ to life. It was interesting to see how the film adapted parts of the story and how it tried to help the audience get into the minds of the characters. In class, there has been lots of good discussion about the film and the story in general. It covers very important topics such as friendship, family, bullying and self image.

A busy week in Primary 6!

Primary 6 have really enjoyed their IDL context this term: Mid Calder Memories. It has culminated in an open afternoon for parents and carers on Wednesday and our class assembly today. Thank you to everyone who managed to make it along to either event.

Throughout this topic, the pupils have learned a lot about designing and creating their own business fit for the streets of Mid Calder. This has involved a big focus on market research, estimating measurements, drawing to scale, using suitable materials for building and pitching to an audience. These skills for life will be further developed throughout the year.

Mid Calder Swimmers

It was great to hear that three pupils from Mid Calder PS took part in the West Lothian Schools’ Swimming Championships on Sunday. Bethan, Olivia (both P7) and Fraser (P7/6) had to qualify for these championships and then took part in two races each on the day. Well done to each of them for their achievements! Their results are below:

Bethan

16/27 Girls 12 and under 50 metre freestyle.

11/17 Girls 12 and under 50 metre butterfly.

Olivia

6/15 Girls 12 and under 50 metre backstroke.

P6 – Creating Questionnaires

In Primary 6 we have been learning about and creating our own questionnaires.

Learning intention:

We are learning to write a questionnaire.

Success Criteria:

I can include:

  • a relevant title
  • numbered questions
  • simple language to ensure the reader understands
  • an appropriate structure

We have been learning about questionnaires because we wanted to survey the local community as part of our IDL context, Mid Calder Memories. We wanted to find out whether the businesses in Mid Calder serve the needs of the community. As part of our topic, we will be creating our own business for Mid Calder so getting the views of the community was very important. We decided that a good way to survey our local community was to use a website called Survey Monkey so that all of our friends and relatives could log on and answer our questions. Here are some pictures of our questionnaires. What do you think?

Please help us gather as many opinions as possible by completing our questionnaires. The links and QR codes are in homework jotters. Thank you!

P6 Class Charter and Blogging

Primary 6 have been very busy over the last couple of weeks. We have spent a lot of time creating a class charter and we have also learned how to write a blog post. Here is Leah’s post all about our charter. Please comment to let us know what you think.

Over the year, various pupils from the class will have a chance to contribute to the P6 blog and keep you all updated on what we are learning.

Transition in Primary 6

Over the last couple of weeks, Primary 6 have been preparing to move into Primary 7 and have also been helping the Primary 5 pupils for their transition into Primary 6. We took part in a transition challenge where we had to produce a presentation all about life in P6. The pupils voted to create their presentation using iMovie so we set about planning and producing short videos explaining these areas:

  • Routines and expectations.
  • Learning in Maths, Language and Health and Wellbeing.
  • IDL contexts.
  • Trips.
  • Responsible Roles.

We showed our videos to the P5s and answered any questions they had about moving up to the upper area.

We also had the chance to see presentations from P7/6 and P7 and ask our own questions. We are feeling prepared and excited for life in P7!

Primary 6’s Botanic Gardens Trip

Primary 6 had a fantastic day out at Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens on Monday. We spent the morning exploring the gardens. We followed a task sheet as we looked for particular flowers, trees, sculptures and animals located around the site. In the afternoon we took part in workshops organised by staff from the gardens. These focused on the life of plants – starting as seeds and ending in flowering and reproduction. We also used magnifying glasses to study plants up close and special glasses to see things as insects do! All in all, it was a brilliant day and the children were a credit to the school as they participated in all the activities.

P6 Cross Country

Primary 6 had a great time taking part in a cross country festival organised as part of the West Calder High School cluster. There were several schools taking part with hundreds of P6 pupils involved. Everyone put in a huge amount of effort and each pupil was awarded a medal as recognition of this. Special mention should go to Bethan Harvey and Olivia Thomson who finished 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the girls race and Euan Roberts who finished 3rd in the boys race. Well done to everyone who took part!

Digital Learning Week in P6

On Tuesday, Primary 6 were lucky to have some Technical Troopers come into class and lead a session exploring coding. We were shown some resources such as https://code.org/learn to help us get started. This resource can be used at home to continue learning. The pupils were incredibly enthusiastic as they were given an opportunity to experience something completely new. We will follow this up over the coming weeks.
