Kuksool Masterclass in P5

On Wednesday this week Primary 5A and Primary 5C took advantage of the beautiful weather to go outside get involved in a brand new type of physical activity.

Emme from P5A was the latest pupil from her class to offer a Masterclass in a skill she has been learning. This week it was Kuksool – a traditional Korean martial art. Emme began by organising everyone into groups and teaching us a warm-up game. She then showed us a series of warm-up moves and chants to go along with them. We then practised a variety of  techniques to take our partners to the ground (safely!). Everyone participated very well and got involved. Miss Anderson and Mrs Campbell were particularly impressed by Emme’s organisational skills and her ability to hold the attention of more than 40 children on the field – not an easy task! Very well done, Emme

We had a brilliant session and are looking forward to the next time someone is able to come into school and share their skills with us – watch this space…

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend

iMovie Masterclass in P5

On Thursday this week, some of Primary 5A and Primary 5C were lucky enough to receive a lesson in how to use the iMovie app as part of Digital Learning Week. Jamie, Dylan, James and Euan came to our class to show us how to record and edit movies. We then all had a chance to go off and make our own short films, which was a lot of fun; these were then shared with the rest of the class. The p5s who were lucky enough to take part in this lesson will now have a chance to teach the rest of their class -they say the best way to learn is to teach someone else, so watch this space! Thanks to Miss Sherlow and the fab Technical Troopers for their input, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

P5A and P5C Visit the National Museum of Scotland

On Monday 23rd April Primary 5 visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to photograph some of the exhibits and to view the 2018 Wildlife Photography Exhibition. We were welcomed by Ms Gill (Theo’s Mum!), who gave us a very interesting insight into her role as a director of the museum and really inspired us to get the most out of our visit. P5A visited the exhibition first and were amazed by the clarity and composition of the many forms of wildlife which were on show. Some of the photographs were even taken by children their own age or younger! While P5A were visiting the exhibition, P5C got to explore the wonders of the museum…

Some favourite exhibits were Dolly the Sheep and the human hamster energise wheel within the Science and Technology installation. We were also blown away by the Natural History section, where we saw dino skeletons, sharks, narwhals, elephants, wildcats, big, cats, giant pandas….the list is endless.

Afterwards, P5A explored the museum while P5C went to view the wildlife photographs. Some of our favourites were the photos of animals interacting with their young, animals playing, animals hunting, underwater shots and so much more. There were also some images of animals which are hunted by humans, showing us the devastating effect we can have on wildlife.

Some of us made sketches of the exhibits; we are continuing to work these up back at school with Miss Brolls and we are adding more detail to these as we go along.

We had a fantastic day at the Museum and would highly recommend it as a day out, especially as it’s completely free!

Have a great holiday weekend,

Miss Anderson and Mrs Campbell

P5 – A Titanic Effort to Recreate 1912!

Mrs Campbell and Miss Anderson have been overwhelmed by the amazing reproductions of ‘Titanic’ cabins which were produced by Primary 5 this term.

Every one which was brought in to school seemed to contain even more detail than the last, from teeny-weeny bowler hats to clocks showing the exact time the ship went down to beautifully tiled Edwardian bathrooms. It was clear that the children loved learning about life aboard the iconic ship and they were fascinated (and a bit scared!) to learn about its sad end. The children also focused on the class system in place during this time and they learned about the impact this had on the unfortunate passengers of Titanic; the number of 3rd class passengers who lost their lives greatly outweighing those in 2nd or 1st class.

Hopefully you can see from our photographs the level of detail included in some of these amazing cabins, with some children choosing to recreate the stark austerity of steerage and others opting for the opulence of 1st class. We know that these creations sometimes need a bit of adult help, so thanks again to all the children (and their helpers) for their amazing creativity – well done!

Snow Day Suggestions P5

*Esta nevando! – It’s snowing!

Continue to practise the Spanish we have been learning in class.

Greetings:

Hola – hello

Buenos dias – good day

Buenas tardes – good afternoon

Buenas noches – good evening

Que tal? – How are you?

Bien / muy bien – good/very good

Fenominal! – Great!

Asi asi – so-so

Mal – bad

fatal – very bad

Hecha Polvo – I have turned to dust!

Go online and find one of the many ABECEDARIO songs/rhymes to help you practise your Spanish alphabet – try spelling out your name or another family member’s.

  • Continue to practise your times tables – challenge yourself to try tables you’re not confident with yet. Get someone to time you and see if you can improve your speed.
  • Take some photos of what you get up to in the snow – write a diary bout your activities or make a video.
  • Think about the debating skills we have used in class and write a list of ‘pros’ and ‘cons’  for the following – ‘Snow days – good or bad?’
  • Write a list of as many snowy/wintery words as you can and practise spelling them using some of the games we do in class, e.g. Kim’s Game, dictionary Race, Hangman

Primary 5 Spectacular Spelling

Primary 5A and Primary 5C have been busy working on new ways to learn their spelling words. The children have enjoyed using their new spelling grids for homework which gives them a lot more choice and allows them to learn their spelling lists in different ways. In class, the children have continued to use a variety of games and activities to support their spelling, such as ‘Dictionary Race’, ‘Hangman’, ‘Spelling Tennis’, ‘Kim’s Game’ and ‘Words Within Words’. Children can work within their own spelling group or choose to challenge themselves by working with a different group to try more difficult words.

‘Spelling games are fun and great for learning’ – MILLIE

‘I think spelling games are good for learning and they help you remember how to spell your words’ – TEAGAN

Open Afternoon in P5C

L.I. We are learning to design a shop to serve the local community

S.C. I can justify my choice of business

I can make a plan of a shop

I can  create a model of a shop

I can choose suitable materials for building my model

Primary 5C have been working hard on building their models of their chosen businesses.

After careful consideration, each group decided on a business which they thought would do well in the village of Mid Calder. The children had to make a basic business plan, giving details about the product or service their business provides and who their target market was likely to be.

After that, they began to design their premises with floor plans and a shop front design.

Finally, they began the fun  part – building models of each business.

After working on their models for a week or so, Primary 5 were very excited to share their designs with their parents, carers and family members during our Open Afternoon.

It was great to have so many adults in class to help and we were all very impressed at their fantastic creativity. Lots of parents enjoyed a Blue Peter moment, creating furniture , sweets and cakes, ball pits, climbing frames, bookshelves and more using just junk materials and lots of imagination!

The children loved having so much extra help and it was fantastic to hear them enthusiastically discussing their businesses and designs. A huge thanks to everyone who was able to attend, your contributions definitely made a big difference to the success of our models.

Back in time with Primary 5C!

As part of Mid Calder Primary School’s 40th Birthday celebrations, we decided to look back across the last 4 decades at the news and culture of the 70s, 80s, 90s and Noughties.

As a homework task, P5 were asked to research a particular decade and share what we had found with the rest of the class. It was surprising how many things from 40 years ago are still with us, like Queen Elizabeth, Star Wars and James Bond movies!

We had lots of fun researching the fashions, movies and music of each decade and all our parents (and teacher!) were able to help us out with their memories of years gone by.

We thoroughly enjoyed sharing our learning with our parents and carers at assembly – we especially enjoyed dressing up in the fashions of the day!

P5C Numeracy

L.I. We are learning to link multiplication and division

S.C. I can count on and back in 3s, 4s, 6s, 8s

I can divide whole numbers into equal groups

Primary 5C were keen to improve their knowledge of times tables so we have had a week of working specifically on this to try and increase speed and accuracy with multiplication and division facts.

We used our knowledge of place value and known facts to multiply  and divide numbers and engaged in a few practical games and activities to help us brush up our times tables facts!

We took advantage of a jotter-free day to learn some games which we think will be helpful – some of these could also be done easily at home:

  • Times table challenge wheel – we tested each other on how quickly and accurately we could write all the stations of the chosen times table
  • Multiplication / division bingo and dominoes
  • Times table snakes and ladders
  • King’s Game – taking turns to place cards at their correct station within the chosen times table

Now that we know these games we can hopefully keep using them to improve our times table accuracy and knowledge of division facts.

Maths Week Scotland in P5C

As part of Maths Week, we linked our learning with our IDL context ‘The Rainforest’ . Early in the week we were learning about where in the world the rainforests are, using maps and atlases. We were able to link this to outcomes within Shape, Position and Movement.

I can use my knowledge of the coordinate system to plot and describe the location of a point on a grid.

MTH 2-18a / MTH 3-18a

L.I. We are learning about position and movement

S.C.- I can identify an object on a map

-I can describe its location in relation to the eight compass points

-I can create a grid and give instructions for how to describe or find a position on the grid

We practised giving each other directions,  making half, quarter and full turns and relating these to angles – some people were brave enough to be blindfolded and allow others to direct them!

Using our knowledge of the eight compass points, we wrote out directions for how to get from one point on the map to another. We practised plotting and finding coordinates on a grid and this allowed us to locate places on maps when we were finding out about where the rainforests exist.

Later in the week we were able to create our own grids and plot coordinates for others to find. We have been trying to keep practising using positional language whenever we can – during our bowling session this afternoon someone commented that their bowling ball had gone a bit too far to the North West!
