P1c Learning Update 29 April

Miss McDermott and Mrs Smith were delighted to see us all back safely for our last term together as P1c. We also welcomed 2 new children to our class and we hope that they enjoy learning and taking part in all the super activities at Linlithgow Primary School with us.

This term one of our topics is Fairy Tales and Traditional Stories and we have started this by reading a  rhyming and lift the flap story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Unfortunately as you know, Goldilocks is rather naughty in the story so we made and displayed some WANTED posters.

Our first team challenge this term was based on the book “A Chair for Baby Bear”.

We worked in teams of 3 to design and build new chairs for our own baby bear using different construction materials. We had to make sure that he would fit comfortably on the chair and that the chair would not fall over.  As you will see from the photographs most of the groups came up with fantastic designs to complete the challenge.

Our second team challenge was to retell the  Goldilocks story using puppets and trying to use “character voices”.  First of all we made the stick puppets and then decided who would be each character.  This was quite tricky as there were 4 characters and only 3 of us in each group. Miss McDermott was very pleased as she did not need to help any of the groups to sort this out!  We then had some practice time before we performed our puppet shows to each other.  There was much laughter at our different “bear” voices!

We have also enjoyed reading the story “Who’s Been Eating My Porridge?” by Nick Ward which includes a very strange porridge monster and a porridge party.

So we decided to end the week by having our very own porridge tasting party, helped of course by Mrs Smith!  We all tried some plain porridge and some sweet porridge to see which one we liked best.  Some of us however, didn’t like any of them (as you might be able to tell from our faces!!) but we did try them which was the important thing.

P1c Learning Update 9th March

As part of our Percy the Park Keeper topic we had been learning about foxes and lots of the stories we have read recently have included foxes too.  We  have learned that foxes can jump up to 3m. We made these super fox masks and went out into the playground to see if we could jump 3m and had great fun trying – as you can see!

As part of Fair Trade Fortnight we had a visitor from Linlithgow Fair Trade group who told us all about different fair trade products.

This week our team challenge was to work together to create a puppet show telling the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We had to decide who would be each of the characters and some people had to be 2 characters.  We only had 10 minutes to practise before we performed to the rest of the class.  Some of us were fantastic at speaking in “troll voices”!

On Thursday it was World Book Day and we enjoyed sharing stories with our P6 buddies. Some of us went upstairs to the P6 classrooms (that’s why there aren’t photos of everyone!) We also started our First Minister’s Reading Challenge – more information to follow soon!

P1c Pumpkin Soup Making – 24 October

It might not quite be Hallowe’en yet but P1c are getting in the mood. This morning we enjoyed  reading the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper, then we got busy carving pumpkins and making our own pumpkin soup.

Today we not only practised cutting the vegetables but also grating them too. After playtime we enjoyed having the soup with some bread for snack.   A big thank you to Mrs Smith and Mrs Kemsley (our student teacher from Edinburgh University) for their help this morning.

A “cracking” time in P1c – 3rd Oct

This week we have been learning the sound ‘e ‘ and the Jolly  Phonics action is to pretend that you are cracking an egg. So we decided to crack some  real eggs and  made some delicious omelettes for snack today.  Everyone passing the classroom stopped to ask what the lovely smell was! As you can see most of us enjoyed eating the omelettes too! Thank you to Mrs Smith who was our head chef today.

World Book ‘Snowy’ Day Challenges

Tomorrow is World Book Day. In school we had planned to have  lots of activities related to the enjoyment and importance of reading. Due to the weather, however, we would love it if you all were able to complete a reading challenge in the snow.

Here are a few suggestions.

  • Read a book while out in the snow?
  • Create a character from a book in the snow?
  • Build an outdoor book stand?
  • Read aloud outside in the snow?
  • Write some WOW words in the snow
  • Design a picture/scene from your favourite book in the snow.

Anything you do please take a quick picture if possible – Tweet your pictures, share on GLOW or bring into school to show us when we return.

Happy snowy reading

Mr Taylor

P1a China topic activities – 28th February

This term as well as learning about Scotland we have been learning about China too and as you will know this was the theme for our fantastic assembly.

We have  watched a video about primary schools in China and we saw that the children painted their numbers and this was something that we wanted to try.  However it wasn’t quite as easy as it looked on the video!

We also made a Chinese shape puzzle called a tangram.  It is made of 7 pieces that fit together but can also be used to make lots of other shapes and silhouettes but they must not overlap. Even though we cut up our own puzzles – only 2 of us could put them back together again! We did all persevere though and didn’t give up  or complain when we found it hard.  We have been talking a lot about growth mindset and this task was a good example of having to keep trying different ways and think positively.

Below is a link to an online tangram puzzle that you can try.

This week our story writing also had a Chinese theme.  We have noticed that lots of the stories we have been reading include dragons so decided to write our own dragon stories.  At the start of our writing lessons we always share our ideas with our elbow partners for 5 minutes.  We  have a special cat timer to let us know when the 5 minutes is up and we then share our ideas with the rest of the class before we draw our pictures and write our stories.

You will be able to read more of our stories in our jotters at the Parents’ meetings in March.

Hats off to P1a!

Before Christmas we read a story all about Kipper trying on different hats and Miss McDermott brought in lots of different hats for us to try on. We then drew pictures of ourselves wearing the hats and wrote a sentence about the hat we liked best.

However with all the excitement of Christmas Miss McDermott forgot that she had taken all these lovely photos …

So here they are!

And here is just some of our super writing and pictures!

P1a Book Week Scotland

Today we had our special book week show and tell and as our P6 buddies are at school camp we were joined by some buddies from P7.  We enjoyed telling each other about our favourite books and the buddies even read some of them to us.

We were very excited to take home the Bookbug bags today. Miss McDermott has read 2 of the stories in class as they both have a baby theme and we have been learning about babies!)  ~ The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee and Little Owl’s Egg.  Next week after we have read the other book Gorilla Loves Vanilla we are going to vote in The Bookbug Picture Book Prize.

Below are some photos of us taking part in today’s show and tell.

P1a go out and about!

Here are some photographs of  P1a out and about this week.  Thank you very much to all the mums who kindly came along with us despite the  cold weather! Your help is much appreciated.

As part of our Percy the Park Keeper topic we visited Beecraigs on Tuesday morning and took part in several activities with the rangers.  These included a scavenger hunt, making animal homes and learning about the animals that live in the park.

As part of our Book Week Scotland activities on Wednesday afternoon we visited Linlithgow Library.  As well as listening to a story we enjoyed looking at and reading lots of different books.  Lots of us have taken books home to read which we will be able to return to the new library within the new partnership centre.
